Birding at the BluffsLake Metroparks’ premier birding destination

Birding: the identification and observation of wild birds in their natural habitat as recreation; bird-watching. (dictionary.com) every year, an estimated 85 million americans enjoy watching, feeding or photographing birds. Birding ranked just above hiking and just below bicycling on a recent national survey of americans’ favorite activities. Birding is so popular because it is simple and inexpensive. armed with a good pair of binoculars, a field guide for pictures or a smartphone with a birding app (with the added bonus of sound)—and you are ready to go! Birding can be done any time and almost anywhere. Once you start as a birder, you are always birding. look out your kitchen window…birding! Driving to work…birding! Working in your backyard...birding! The great thing about birding is that birds are everywhere and able to be observed year-round. This hobby can be as easy or challenging as you make it.

lake Metroparks offers many birding-related walks, events and activities for all ages and experience levels year-round. Sign up for the Family Birding Class and then join us at lake erie Bluffs for these birding events: International Migratory Bird Day on May 13 (pg. 22)100 Bird Blitz at the Bluffs on May 21 (pg. 9)Birding Tips from the Tower: Birds in Flight on May 28 (pg. 9)For a list of other birding-related opportunities, see page 9.

Whether you are a beginner, a new birding family or a veteran birder, lake erie Bluffs is a choice spot for observing bird behavior right near your own backyard. From sky to brambles, lakeshore to woods, bird activity abounds within the diverse habitats of lake erie Bluffs. The 50-foot-tall observation tower affords a 360-degree view to scan the horizon for bald eagles, red-tailed hawks

and turkey vultures. lake erie itself may provide a glimpse of red-breasted mergansers, bufflehead or even a common loon. With miles of trails to search the woodlands, thickets and fields for orioles, common yellow warblers and catbirds, even a beginning birder has success at lake erie Bluffs.

lake Metroparks’ staff have documented 242 species of birds at the park. During the past two years, we have enjoyed a flight of more than 400 turkey vultures, hundreds of gulls, a morning of more than 140 flickers and mixed blackbird flocks of nearly 10,000 birds. in May, we have watched the arrival of more than 1,200 blue jays, up to 3,000 american crows and the return of hundreds of bank swallows to their nesting colony.

Rare birds found at the Bluffs include: brant, black vulture, northern goshawk, golden eagle, yellow rail, Sabine’s gull, eurasian collared-dove, fish crow, cave swallow, bohemian waxwing, kirtland’s warbler, clay-colored sparrow and red and white-winged crossbill. Uncommon species include: red-necked grebe, little gull, long-eared owl, short-eared owl, northern saw-whet owl, northern shrike, Henslow’s sparrow, nelson’s sparrow, summer tanager and Brewer’s blackbird.

Bluffs Birding Tips by John Pogacnik, Biologist

You can see a nice variety of birds at the Bluffs any time you go, but there are a few ways to increase your chances of seeing a large variety of birds:

• Watch the weather. in the spring, try to go when there is a southwest wind with a low pressure system for waterfowl, april for hawks and sparrows and May is best for warblers.

• Visit as many different habitats as possible. Walk through the fields and woods, watch the lake and look up for birds passing overhead. The greater diversity of habitats you check, the bigger diversity of birds you’ll see.

• Do some research. Check out a copy of the annotated list of Ohio birds (http://ohiobirds.org/ wp-content/uploads/2015/11/OBRClist.pdf). This will help you to know when a particular species can be found and how rare it is.

• Be an early riser. early mornings are the best time to see birds, as that is when birds are most active. Birds migrate at night and in the morning and often settle down by 10 a.m. The hotter the weather, the earlier things slow down.

“My favorite birding moment at lake erie Bluffs was getting great views of the bohemian waxwings—a life bird for me. The thing i like most about birding at lake erie

Fired Up Fired Up

Meadows and old fields in lake Metroparks offer refuge to many species of wildlife. Since these habitats are found in such short supply throughout lake County, they are important areas for conservation. lake Metroparks works to manage valuable habitats that are capable of providing food, water, shelter and space that all wild animals need in order to survive and thrive.

For more than a decade, lake Metroparks has been integrating populations of warm-season grasses into its meadows. These species include switchgrass, big bluestem and indian grass that are adapted to grow in a variety of temperature and moisture regimes. in addition to being drought tolerant and long lasting, warm-season grasses are preferred over their cool-season counterparts since their growth habit allows birds and small mammals better ease of movement and plenty of overhead cover capable of providing safe areas for breeding, rearing young and foraging.

Meadows and old fields found throughout lake County and northeast Ohio occasionally require some upkeep so that they remain healthy and productive. Without any care given to these areas, meadows would eventually become forests and the plants and animals that call those habitats home would likely disappear. One method used to maintain healthy meadows is to periodically burn them. The process, known as a prescribed burn, involves the planned and detailed use of fire over designated areas conducted under particular environmental conditions to achieve desired management goals.

Fire is an extremely useful tool in maintaining meadows and other environments. it has been used throughout history by native americans to improve hunting land, clear areas of dense vegetation for crops, and to encourage the growth of plants used for food. as fire moves through an area removing undesirable vegetation, nutrients held in old plant growth are recycled, helping to invigorate the growth of new more desirable

plants. Other benefits of using fire as a management tool include reducing the spread of pests and disease, providing forage for wildlife and reducing wildfire danger by removing excess amounts of fuel. These benefits contribute to forming an improved habitat that promotes the growth of desirable plants capable of supporting varieties of wildlife.

lake Metroparks’ use of fire is implemented with other management strategies to support the long-term health and well-being of its meadows. The effectiveness of fire in reducing exotic species, undesirable grasses and woody plants that often overrun meadows if left unchecked, renders it an especially useful tool that is preferred over other strategies. Burns generally take place during the spring after the last snowmelt around the time when early-emerging cool-season grasses start actively growing. Burns taking place at this time provide a competitive advantage to the more desirable warm-season grasses that will emerge later in the spring.

Burns have become an important part of meadow and old field management at parks like Girdled Road Reservation, indian Point Park, Penitentiary Glen Reservation and Hidden valley Park. each year, plots and fields are burned at particular parks on a three-year rotation. Burning on this schedule maintains the warm-season grasses and accommodates fire-sensitive species that require these areas for successful reproduction.

natural resources staff carefully monitor weather and other conditions in the field prior to a burn. Factors such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and fuel moisture affect the behavior of a fire. Burn managers must be aware of these conditions to ensure that safety is maintained throughout a burn, smoke is carried away from sensitive areas and the desired management goals of a burn are achieved. after a long winter as our natural areas begin to spring back to life, our team of experienced technicians will get fired up to create quality habitats throughout the park district.

is to periodically burn them.

A backfire technique of burning against the wind to allow a more complete burn and less smoke is used at Girdled Road Reservation.

AcTive ouTingsNew things to do and places to see

to check off your bucket list

There are few things that are for certain, but one of them is that we are all getting older. What that means today is not necessarily what it meant 30 years ago. it used to mean that we would slow down and become less active. Today though, we are using our free time for a variety of active leisure activities—biking, running and paddling to name a few. We no longer want to watch life and opportunities pass us by, we want to get out and participate! We are looking for new things to do and places to see to check off our bucket lists. With this in mind, lake Metroparks is joining the fun by creating opportunities to introduce active people to the outdoors. These activities can be autonomous recreation or they can be in a group at one of our programs.

For those of you who want to set off on your own, we have more than 50 miles of trails to hike, 27 miles of the Scenic and Wild Grand River to paddle, nine different parks along the river, five ponds to fish and six lakefront parks to explore. in addition, we have paddleboards and kayaks for rent at Fairport Harbor lakefront Park if you want to give it a try on your own.

For those of you who desire a little guidance, we have programs and activities throughout the year to get you familiar with the activity and the area. This spring, we are offering programs specifically for people ages 50+ who are looking to become more active. Here are some of our offerings:

Jim & Erika Corrigan: Love for volunteeringby Marie kozan, Outdoor Education Manager

There are many couples who are active volunteers in lake Metroparks, but this couple met by volunteering at one of our special events! Jim and erika Corrigan have volunteered for lake Metroparks for ten years and have been married for the last four. They met while working as parking patrol volunteers at Penitentiary Glen’s Super Star Party.

erika has been a longtime lake Metroparks program participant. it was during these programs that she learned about volunteer opportunities. She found that she could enjoy volunteering while doing the activities she loved (including bicycling and kayaking) in the parks.

Jim started volunteering with lake Metroparks through his job, which encouraged their employees to get involved in the community. He started with parking patrol at Farmpark, then moved on to driving tractors, the barrel train and special events.

Jim and erika volunteer across the park district in a variety of programs and special events including the Grand River Canoe and kayak Race, the lighthouse Triathlon, bike ride support and cooking. One of their favorite events is Halloween Hayrides. Jim delivers hot chocolate to the chilled volunteers working the sites and erika is one of our top event narrators. Halloween Hayrides is so much a part of their lives that they planned their wedding around it, waiting until november when the event was over—that’s dedication!

Jim and erika are the definition of committed volunteers. They believe in lake Metroparks’ mission and offer their help whenever needed. They take ownership and share in the responsibility of leading programs, are great promoters of the parks and enthusiastically share their passion with others. They are great advocates of lake Metroparks.

erika and Jim live in Wickliffe. in their free time, they enjoy spending time with their three dogs and doing home improvements.

We thank Jim and erika for their dedication and look forward to many more years with this awesome couple!

Bob & Betty Schmiermund: From Program Participants to Volunteers

by andy avram, Interpretive Manager

Oftentimes, lake Metroparks gains great volunteers when regular program participants decide to step up to the next level and become volunteers. This was the case with Bob and Betty Schmiermund, who started off as Starbucks Saturday Morning Hikes participants and transitioned to volunteers in 2004.

as active hikers, they both enjoy helping with lake Metroparks’ hiking programs, including Hiking Seniority, Tuesday Fast Hikers, Off Trail Treks, Starbucks Saturday Morning Hikes and other programs. This means one or both of them volunteer on Tuesday and then again Saturday morning. For a number of years they also monitored our bluebird nesting boxes once a week and record the status of baby birds. They have also assisted with many special events over the years, including Magical Whooloween, the Winter Hike and more. in many cases they volunteer as a team, but recently Bob has decided to expand his volunteer service as a park district mail courier once a week.

as someone who gets to work with Bob and Betty on a regular basis, i know it is always nice to see them signed up to help with my programs. Wildlife interpretive Manager Marilyn levand says, “Whenever they help with a program you know you are getting dedicated, helpful volunteers who will show up with smiles.” Whenever we need last minute volunteers, we know the Schmiermunds are likely to step up to the plate and help out.

all in all, we would like to thank Bob and Betty Schmiermund for their dedicated commitment to volunteering for lake Metroparks!

as the weather warms up and new leaves start to grow on the trees, wild animals become very active. Springtime is a great time to see birds returning from migration, animals searching for mates and nesting sites and the arrival of young.

a wild animal’s chief concern is survival. They need food, water, space and shelter. any available area that provides these things is an opportunity for them to create a home. in order to happily co-exist with native wildlife so that we can enjoy watching them without creating problems for them or ourselves, there are a few simple things to keep in mind. The most important thing to remember is that wildlife need very little from us—we must respect their space and do no harm.

Watching native wildlife can be a treat—even in our own backyards! Here are some suggestions for a wildlife-friendly backyard:• Check for nests before cutting down a tree or clearing brush.• Place caps on chimneys, vents and window wells to prevent wildlife from falling in or nesting in your home.• Keep pets under control so that they don’t injure or eat backyard wildlife. • Keep your pet’s food inside, not outside on porches or decks. • Keep trash cans locked or inside the garage.• Demonstrate respect for wildlife and their homes; teach children not to catch or harass them.• Exercise caution when driving and watch the roadside for wild animals, especially at dawn and dusk.

Wildlife Dos & Don’ts

by Tammy O’neil, Wildlife Care Manager

When at home or visiting the parks, remember to keep animals wild and healthy by not feeding them.

Feeding wildlife creates unhealthy conditions. animals congregate in areas where they are fed, causing several problems. They exceed the carrying capacity of their habitats and become overcrowded. High levels of fecal matter are concentrated in one area, which causes unsanitary conditions for animals and people. Diseases can be passed from one animal to another when areas are overcrowded.

Foods that are not part of their natural diet (bread, popcorn, shelled corn and cereal) are “junk food” to wild animals. They lack many of the nutrients the animals need in order to stay healthy.

Feeding wildlife causes loss of wild instincts. Wild animals that are routinely fed by humans become habituated to humans for food and lose their healthy fear of them. if you want to help out wildlife, plant native plants and wildflowers that provide nutritious berries and seeds.

Call us on the Wildlife Hotline: 440-256-1404 x2131if you find an injured and/or orphaned animal, the best thing to do is call our Wildlife Hotline immediately. injured animals can be very defensive even when they are hurt and weak. When you call the kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center, you will be given the best and safest information on what to do next.

if you find a young animal by itself that is not injured, please remember that wild parents know what’s best for their young. animals are often left alone, which is part of their development and how they learn survival skills. We don’t need to get involved! Most young animals don’t have a scent. if the parents have hidden them in the grass or elsewhere, predators will not be attracted to them. The parents will come back for them when it is safe. if you have concerns, please call the Wildlife Hotline before intervening.

each year, the kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center treats more than 2,000 injured and orphaned wildlife. Many eventually recover from their injuries and resume their lives in the wild. The center is home to permanently injured animal ambassadors including reptiles, mammals and birds of prey. These animals assist staff in teaching about wildlife issues and conservation. visit the Wildlife Yard to get an up-close look at all of the amazing animals! The yard is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
