“Rina, you know the Egyptians work us hard all day. They are not kind. They only pay us a little bit. If there isa mistake, we are punished. If we are slow, we arepunished. There are no days off. If we are sick or hurt,we still have to work.” He paused and rubbed his eyes.
Quietly he said “Papa’s foot slipped today, and hedropped his load. It slowed up the line and the Egyptianslave drivers made him carry two loads as punishment. On his bad ankle too!” He said angrily, then lowered hisvoice again. “They hounded him all the way down theline. He is embarrassed and angry and sore.”
He glanced at the old curtain. “How I’d like to makethose slave drivers feel what we feel.” Ari fumed. Thenhe took a long, deep breath. “But that is not God’s way.” Why Ari?” I whispered. “Why do they hate us?”
I thought about my day watering and weeding our garden, grinding grain forour bread, sweeping the house. I wondered what their day was like for them tobe so quiet. My sister Hannah prepared the food and as we put plates, cupsand the stew on the table, I heard my father groaning behind the curtain.Mama came in drying her face. “Bring me the salve Rina please.” Ilooked at her dry, cracked hands that were starting to bleed again. Iturned to get the jar of salve and a clean cloth. As she sat, and I helpedher wrap her hands. She gave me a tired but loving smile, and then tookthe jar and leftover cloth to Papa behind the old curtain. We could hearhim groaning as he prayed, his voice was sad and angry.
Papa went to bed right after supper. While we were washing up, Iwhispered to Ari “What happened today?" Ari sighed from his chair atthe table. He and Simon were so tired they hadn’t moved.
The Beginning of theExodus:
God Hears the IsraelitesAs I lit the lamps at sundown, Mama, Papa, Simon, and Ari came home from theEgyptian worksites tired like they do every day. But today they came insomberly and went directly to wash for supper. Papa was limping and I couldtell something was bothering him. He didn’t say anything after greeting us. Hejust limped behind the old curtain where he and Mama slept. I looked at mybrothers to see if they knew what was wrong. Simon shrugged his shouldersand Ari whispered “We’ll talk later.”

"Listening to Papa tonight reminds me of Grandfather.”Simon remembered. “He used to sound like that too when hecame home from the worksites. I remember him groaninglike that during prayers. Sometimes I couldn’t understandwhat he was saying, if he was saying anything at all. Now Ithink I understand why. The frustration and hurt is toomuch. We need Jehova to rescue us.”
Rina and her family prayed for deliverance. All the Israeliteslaves prayed. They cried out to God that this wasn’t fair, that being slaves was too hard. And the next day they got upand worked hard under the slave drivers again. They prayedwhen they were angry. They prayed their thanks when theyhad a good meal. When another baby was born theyprayed with joy, and they groaned prayers when they weresad and exhausted and in despair. They prayed forprotection and they asked God to change their situation.
"Rina, This Pharaoh doesn’t know about our Joseph. How God used him to save Egypt and othernations in the famine. He is afraid because there are so many of us.”
Simon turned quickly and glared at Ari. “Be careful Ari! If you speakbadly of Pharaoh it could get us into more trouble!” he hissed. Arilooked back at him and defiantly whispered “It’s true! He is afraid thatwe’ll turn against him so he is trying to make us believe we are weakand can’t do anything on our own. But Pharaoh doesn’t believe in ourJehova. We will pray to Him. Maybe He will help us like he did in thefamine.” Simon slowly nodded in agreement.
What they didn’t know yet was that God had heard theirgroaning! He remembered his promise with Abraham, withIsaac and with Jacob. He promised that He would be theirGod, their protector and provider. God saw the Israelites andwas concerned about them.
And actually, His plan had already begun. A big plan! He wasgetting a leader ready.
Moses had already been born, and God was preparing him tolead these tired, weary people out of Egypt. First in Egypt’spalace as the adopted son of the Princess, and then as ashepherd in the far side of the desert. God wouldn’t leave hischosen people to suffer, He was going to lead them to thepromised land!
