We often refer to ourselves as being “Minnesota nice.” However, in my years of teaching junior high and high school flutists, many of my students have complained that the flute section within their band or orchestra just doesn’t feel very nice or welcoming (especially to incoming freshman), even when that student holds the principal chair. There is so much competition among the individual flutists. Speaking of “Minnesota nice,” I am thrilled to have Rhonda Larson as our guest artist this year. After passing her many times in the exhibit hall at the NFA convention—the UMFA booth was close to her booth—a few UMFA members approached me about bringing her to Flute Fest. 2018 FLUTE FESTWe welcome you to join us on Saturday, April 7th, at Plymouth Congregational Church for Flute Fest 2018.

Flute Fest has many wonderful recitals, and we hope you take the chance to hear young performers bravely performing in the Rising Stars Recitals. The Midwest Flute Ensembles Recital will feature junior high and high school flute ensembles, as well as college groups. In our continual effort to promote geographical outreach, we welcome groups who have traveled a distance to perform on this program. The Midwest Flutist’s Recital never disappoints!

Hear Linda Chatterton on flute and Rachel Randwein on harp, performing the Uebayashi Sonate. Dr. Timothy Hagen will be performing POP for solo flute as well as the Martinu Sonata, and Dr. Lauren Mcnee will be performing Dash by Jennifer Higdon, accompanied by Benjamin Cold on soprano saxophone

and Seulgee Lee Nelson on piano. This recital will also feature Adam Kuenzel, principal flute of the Minnesota Orchestra. You won’t want to miss it!

WINDS OF THE WORLD PERFORMANCE WITH RHONDA LARSON

“Rhonda’s evening of flute music radiated. There was a straightforward positive musicality to what she did and it cheered the listener.”—The New York Times

Rhonda will perform an intimate, multi-faceted solo flute show, taking the listener on a journey around the world with an assortment of ethnic flutes and her gold flute, woven together by stories. Among the variety of flutes are Indian bansuri, crystal flutes, panpipes, Native American flutes, Celtic whistles, the Chinese dizi, and more. Her virtual band includes piano, acoustic guitar, synth, bass, and percussion in a variety of ensemble configurations, while others are Rhonda’s adventurous writing for flute alone. Rhonda’s innovative technical abilities include her signature one-person duet of singing and playing simultaneously. Her music merges the most soulful elements of sacred, classical, folk, Celtic, and ethnic music. The program consists chiefly of Rhonda’s original compositions, and is accessible to audiences of all ages and genre preferences.

RHYTHMIC RUBRICS WITH RHONDA LARSON

Join us for a lively and untraditional group participation class. An engaging percussion background rhythm will lead attendees in various physical flute activities, including call-and-response phrase inventing, liberating us from the written page. This fun class is appropriate for all learners of all ages. Be ready to move, be engaged, and have a great time!

EXPLORING ETHNIC FLUTES WITH RHONDA LARSON

Learn about flutes from around the globe. This class is appropriate for anyone who is curious to learn more about non-traditional flutes. You do not need to own ethnic flutes to attend, but if you have any, we encourage you to bring them to increase your individual participation. This will be a great opportunity to explore the wide world of flutes without leaving your own “backyard”.

MASTERCLASS WITH RHONDA LARSON

Rhonda teaches masterclasses all over the world, and we are thrilled to welcome her to Minnesota. Rhonda strives to bring each individual to a place within themselves where they can play their music with technical ease and bold, expressive freedom. Ultimately, Rhonda’s goal with players is to help them reach their greatest potential, and with the enduring reminder of why we play our flutes in the first place: because we LOVE it! We are certain you will learn new things and

leave this class motivated to continue your journey with your flute.

JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL MASTERCLASS WITH DR. TIMOTHY HAGEN

This masterclass is a wonderful opportunity devoted to our junior high and high school flute students.

Timothy Hagen is an internationally acclaimed flutist, praised for his “technical virtuosity and musical sensitivity” (NewMusicBox). Dr. Hagen is currently on the faculty of the Mead Witter School of Music at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he also serves as flutist in the Wingra Wind Quintet. He previously taught at Oklahoma State University and The University of Texas at Austin, as well as in partnerships with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Lincoln Center Education, and Dallas Symphony. His teachers include Marianne Gedigian, Jim Walker, Philip Dunigan, Renée Siebert, Tadeu Coelho, Chelsea Czuchra, Felicia McNaught, and Tina Ballard. We are honored to have him with us for Flute Fest 2018.

FLUTE FEST GUEST ARTISTRHONDA LARSONLEARN MORE AT WWW.RHONDALARSON.COM

Rhonda Larson says she was born wanting to play the flute — where that desire came from remains a mystery to her. It was finally at age 10 that Rhonda first picked up a flute, a journey that has taken her to the farthest reaches of the world. Her ‘practice room’ was a high mountain ridge outside her family home in Bozeman, Montana, where the sky is endless and the breathtaking mountains cut through your soul. It is not difficult, then, to understand that the depths of Rhonda’s music comes from a place in her heart that celebrates the beauty of the human spirit, found most alive in nature.

In addition to learning from stellar teachers in Montana, Rhonda gathered further education from live Public Radio broadcasts of the New York Philharmonic, which she could only listen to from one small corner of her parents’ bedroom–the only location in her entire house where the FM broadcast could be audibly tuned in. There she sat, huddled up, listening to the most beautiful music she had yet heard. Rhonda has always been one to follow her own path, that road less traveled–it is perhaps an expected course from any progeny of the wild west. An early indication of Rhonda’s unorthodox trail was her declining the invitation to attend Juilliard. Instead, she chose to remain in the inspirational, natural surroundings of the west and study at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho.

In her final year there, she won the prestigious National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition, which included a Carnegie Hall recital debut. Not only is she to date the youngest winner in the history of the competition, but the year she won, the second place winner happened to be a student from Juilliard. Everyone said of Rhonda, “Who is this girl? Where did she come from?”

Devouring the classical flute repertoire, Rhonda was always in search of new musical challenges. In a New York Flute Club interview, she said, “I began to see that music has a larger role for humanity: that it can truly speak to the shared expressions of our human souls.” This evolving philosophical foundation of her music was about to be played out in the next step of her musical journey.

In her final month of university in Moscow, Idaho, Rhonda was discovered by Paul Winter, who immediately invited her to join the Paul Winter Consort. Ironically, her first tour with them was to Moscow, Russia. Rhonda launched on a non-stop touring and recording career with this innovative group.

After eight years with the Consort and a newly-won Grammy Award, Rhonda set out on her own to put to work the breadth of learning from her time with the Consort. She knew only one thing for sure: her music could no longer be confined to only one genre. She began composing tailor-made music suited to her technical prowess, and learning ethnic flutes from around the world while immersing herself in the archives of indigenous folk music.

Rhonda formed her band, Ventus, established her own music publishing company, Wood Nymph Music, and continues performing and teaching masterclasses across the globe. She conducts a weeklong masterclass every two years near her second home in Italy. Rhonda performed in South Africa’s

Parliament of the World’s Religions where she shared the stage with such luminaries as Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama, but she doesn’t take herself

too seriously—she performed with the same gusto at NBC’s finale broadcast of Survivor at Madison Square Garden, as seen by over 40 million viewers.

Rhonda has a discography of over 19 commercial recordings from label/distributors such as Windham Hill and American Gramaphone, among others. She has recorded a variety of flute music for the CBS television series, “Survivor” and “The Restaurant”, including the Live CBS finale episode of “Survivor” from Madison Square Garden’s, seen by over 40 million viewers. Her most recent engagements include performances in Minsk, Belarus with her band, Ventus, with teaching engagements and a solo performance at the Music Conservatory in Mogilev, followed by one week throughout Latvia, offering her expertise to professional woodwind instructors and students alike. In 2014, Rhonda Larson & Ventus performed throughout China for 33 concerts over a period of nine weeks.

Rhonda has two solo recordings, Free as a Bird, and Distant Mirrors. The latter is an eclectic musical reflection on world cultures and ancient traditions, and was listed in the top ten of the “25 Essential CD’s” nationally syndicated Public Radio program, Echoes. Rhonda is featured in “Flute Stories–101 Inspirational Stories from the World’s Best Flute Players”, Windplayers publication. Ms. Larson has served on the Board of Directors for the National Flute Association, and is a frequent writing contributor to The Instrumentalist/Flute Talk magazine. Rhonda currently serves on the Board of Directors for the World Flute Society.

Rhonda’s unique music studio is in an octagonal 3-story tower in their home in Southwestern Connecticut. They also live part-time at their second home in the Lazio region of Italy.

LESSONS AVAILABLE with Guest Artist RHONDA LARSON

JOIN US AT FLUTE FEST FOR A LITTLE TANGO IN HER BLOOD RECITAL By Alison Young

One April in the last years of the last century – before I developed the neurological condition that would end my playing career - I was afforded an opportunity to travel and work for two months in a place I’d only dreamed about, Argentina. I first met the Argentinean pianist with whom I’d share this journey, in queue for a short hop to northern Patagonia and a small city called General Roca. We resembled each other – only a little – but that didn’t keep people from calling us Hermanas en Otra Vida. When my “sister” and I arrived at our destination, the setting sun was lighting up the fruit trees of the Río Negro valley a fiery orange as it melted into the ruddy desert. It seemed to me this beautiful place was most unlikely for a music school, but starting the adventure here turned out to be ideal.

It was two weeks of luxury at Ciudad de las Artes. My days began with classes of eager students spanning generations. After lunch, I took the customary siesta sipping yerba mate. The afternoons gave way to long evenings of a complete take-over of the auditorium – the concert grand and custom-made music stand included – to read through piles of Argentine repertoire, mostly songs and tangos written for other instruments than the flute.

It was a wild musical ride, long, but by no means exhaustive, beginning on those cool autumn afternoons, followed by a concert tour of both Argentina and the United States, a recording including my arrangements, and finally, this moment today and the enormous privilege to share with

you, music arranged and edited with just the tiniest bit of Argentina flowing through my veins.

I am pleased to present to you A Little Tango in Her Blood: Music for Flute from Argentina as a “radio program” sharing the stories of my journey while my dear friend, the superb soloist Paula Gudmundson, performs with her wonderful collaborator, the equally gifted and passionate, Tracy Lipke-Pery at the piano.

Paula and I are connected through our love of South America and especially its music. Tango and indigenous music injects a frisson of character and energy into what we consider classical repertoire. Sharing these gems in a solo recital is always exciting because it gets people into heated discussions as they latch onto their particular favorites.

Six years ago, Paula received a Minnesota State Arts Board grant to locate Argentine works for flute and piano. She tells me she “hit the jackpot” in discovering music by Alberto Williams and Amancio Alcorta, and has returned many times to Buenos Aires to continue her research. It has been my great pleasure to share her recordings of this music on Classical MPR. The format of this recital is a “radio show” and we presented it for the first time this past fall at UMD. It has been a blast to share a connective and deeply personal narrative with wonderfully receptive audiences.

2018 SUMMER CAMPS By Vanamali Medina

It’s February in Minnesota. And as enjoyable as skiing, ice skating, and hot chocolate are, I, for one, am already dreaming of sidewalks that don’t need shoveling, sun-warmed tomatoes from the garden, the wind rustling through thick, green leaves… and, of course, some quality time with my flute at a summer music camp. Whether your idea of a perfect summer music experience is a quick musical dip or a long, languorous immersion; packing up the car for a new adventure or something close to home, there’s a flute camp to suit you!

This summer will be my 6th consecutive year attending a summer program, and there’s just nothing better to shake off that end-of-school fog. Take some time for you and your music! Spend a few days around your wonderful fellow flutists. And remember, UMFA also has scholarships available specifically to help members attend summer programs. Applications are due March 15th. Please see umfaflutes.org for more details.
