New IBM System x3650 M4 - Innovative Design with New FeaturesBetter Power and Thermal design

Better Power and Thermal design - As data centers grow, power and cooling costs are becoming a larger piece of the IT budget. According to EPA's report to Congress, data centers will account for nearly 3% of total US electricity consumption by 2011. IBM has always been focused on help clients reduce their energy consumption through greater efficiency and innovation. This new generation of servers is no exception to this IBM tradition and provide clients with an even greater power efficiency than pervious generations.

Choice of 3 Redundant Power supplies that are 80PLUS platinum power (94%) efficiency design

Energy Star Compliance: Servers that earn the ENERGY STAR will, on average, be 30 percent more energy efficient than standard servers(1). The IBM System x3650 M4 is slated to be Energy Star Compliant by 2Q12

(1) Source: US Environmental Protection Agency – Energy Star Website – Click here for more details(2) As measured by spec SPECpower_ssj2008 benchmark over pervious generation

Free air cooling support:– 60W to 95W processors models support 5o-40oC– 115W to 135W processors models support 10o-35oC– Allow customers to save on cooling costs

N+N Fan Design: True business critical design these hot-swap, dual-motor cooling fans help maintain a healthy system temperature by keeping internal components cool. These fans are also low wattage keeping energy costs low and have reduced noise levels

Zone Cooling: Four independent FAN modules support 2 Thermal Zones. Each zone will adjust fan speed based on the components and thermal conditions in that zone. This provides optimal temperature within the server without wasting energy

Ultimate in Uptime: Company’s rely on their servers to run business critical applications and with the cost of server downtime as high as $70k / hour(1) it’s more important than ever to choose a server that is built with the maximum uptime in mind. The IBM system x3650 M4 combines a multitude of features to keep a client’s business applications running

Hot Swap and Redundant Fans, PSU & HDD – x3650 M4 has optional HS & Redundant features such as Fans, PSU and HDDs to increase uptime

(1) "Reducing Downtime and Business Loss: Addressing Business Risk with Effective Technology," IDC Whitepaper, August 2009

Hot Swap and Redundant Fans – The x3650 M4 offers true business critical N+N redundancy instead of N+1 like some of the competitionMemory Mirror – Like RAID 1 for

memory, x3650 M4 provides provides full protection against single-bit and multi-bit errors. This is beneficial for any customer that require maximum uptime.

Tool-less Design – IBM continues to offer customers a tool-less design for the M4 generation of servers. This allows for faster repairs and quicker up-time

Predictive Failure Analysis & Light Path Diagnostics: A key component in the IBM System x range of servers is the ability to monitor the health of server components (PFA) and quickly identity & fix any issues before they take down the server (Light Path Diagnostics). These features provides the ability to either hot-swap the component (if applicable) or schedule downtime at low-impact times for the component to be changed or refreshed

Environmental monitor with fan speed control according to following:

– CPU temperature– Memory temperature– Voltage Regulator temperature– PCI zone outlet temperature– Adaptor temperature– PCH temperature– FAN failure

Low wattage and low noise FAN modules

x3650 M4 has 4 (x3550 M4 has 6) independent FAN modules to support 2 Thermal Zones with N+N FAN redundant design

– Fan speed is determined based on ambient temperature– Each thermal zone will adjust fan speed based on the components

and thermal condition in the fan zone– Lowest fan speed during low ambient condition or system idle mode

LightPath Indicators to report FAN modules error

Redundant, hot-swap components Hot-swap, dual-motor cooling fans helps maintain a healthy system by keeping internal components cool, it serves your business-critical application running safe

Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) : Key components in the IBM System x range of servers that provides the ability to monitor the health of server components and generate an alert up to 48 hours before failure actually occurs. This provides the ability to either hot-swap the component (if applicable) or schedule downtime at low-impact times for the component to be changed or refreshed.

Light Path Diagnostics – Ultimate in Uptime

!

IBM implements PFA on more server components than any other vendor. The System x components currently protected by PFA are:

–Hard Disk Drives–Fans–Power Supply Units–Memory–CPU’s–Voltage Regulator Modules

Come Home Feature:If a hardware component generates an alert within the warranty period of the component they will exchange the component on the basis of that alert rather than waiting for the failure to actually occur.
