Hong Kong Designers Association Global Design Awards 2016
1. About GDA
The 40th anniversary of HKDA Global Design Awards (HKDA GDA) would significantly
trigger a turning point to becoming “the brand” for excellent global designs. This version
is also ready to unveil a remarkable page for the design history of Hong Kong.
HKDA GDA has been one of the most established multi-disciplinary design competitions in
the Asia-Pacific region organized by HKDA since 1975. It is not simply a design competition
to honour global design excellence, but also acts as an engine to energise a series of
events as a yearlong campaign that aims to promote Hong Kong designs internationally
and to enhance Hong Kong as one of the major creative hubs in Asia-Pacific.
Milestones:

2. About DNA
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of HKDA Global Design Awards (HKDA GDA), a brand
new Design NextGen Awards (DNA) for students will be launched to nurture the young
design generation. The objectives of DNA are to cultivate appreciation and enthusiasm of art
for a synthesis of art, business, culture and design, and at the same time, enrich customer
experience by enhancing touch points with the narration of global creativity. HKDA and
partners join hands to call for talents to submit portfolios with the theme “the Next Design”.
3. About the Organiser
Established in 1972, the Hong Kong Designers Association (HKDA) is the first of its kind
in Hong Kong for practicing designers and design administrators, with aims to uphold the
status of design practitioners and to encourage the use and the appreciation of quality

Growing up in the Philippines, Mara spent the second half of her life in Paris, where she

Tobias started his career by dropping out of high school at 15, and then made grand
plans of becoming a software engineer. After realising he, quite frankly, sucked at it,
Tobias began teaching himself design at the age of 16.
After opening his own design studio, Tobias had the honour to develop products and
services in a wide range of categories for companies such as Red Bull, Google, BMW,
Wacom, Sony, Fantasy Interactive, Stinkdigital, Toyota, Ralph Lauren, Bwin, to name a
few.
As part of his quest for overachievement, Tobias has been honoured with the NET

as a member on the Board of Directors at AIGA NYC and is supporter, advisor and
mentor to a variety of programmes around the world, including Cannes Lions, Hyper
Island, Art Directors Club & the FWA.
For the past two and a half years, Tobias has helped to build new products as Art Director
& Lead Product Designer at Spotify in New York. During this time, Spotify grew from 15
million users to 70+ million, becoming the leading music streaming service in the world.
Tobias’ work has been published in highly acclaimed press such as Fast Company, Inc
Magazine, net Magazine, Computer Arts, Wired, First Round Capital, Business Insider,
Washington Post, The Next Web.
In his spare time Tobias is the co-founder of Semplice, a portfolio system and community
used by thousands of the world’s leading designers who represent brands such as HUGE,

BBDO, Tumblr, Disney, Apple, Firstborn, Unit9, R/GA and Razorfish. Since the launch,
the Semplice has quickly grown into one of the leading portfolio systems for creatives.
In addition to his mentoring work, Tobias is advisor and creative director at Memomi. He
has played a crucial role in creating the brand and overseeing the user experience to help
establish the world’s first digital mirror software platform called Memory Mirror. Memomi
aims to revolutionise the interactive shopping experience and recently launched with
selected partners such as Intel, IBM, Sony and Panasonic.

under his close direction, Lo has been actively pursuing design in Italy for more than two
decades. His works have long been recognised in and beyond the eminent circle of

Light and Soul of an Object, Chi Wing Lo - Journey of Imagination, Chi Wing Lo - Vision of

7 FAQ
7.1 General
Q1: Why you should participate in HKDA GDA?
HKDA will promote the winning designs, awardees and follow up with the latest
development of their award-winning designers. These awardees will not only be formally
credited with a trophy/certificate, but they will also be more socially exposed to the media,
by means of HKDA GDA’s authorised use of logo and promotion through online exhibition,
annual publication, public exhibition and conference etc.
Q2: Who is eligible?
The designer, the owner or user (client) of design, the brand’s owner, its designer or
design consultancy are welcome to submit designs which have actually been produced

Q4: What should I do if I created an account but didn’t receive the activation email?
The system will send you a notification email with activation link to your email address
once your account is created. Since it is an automated email, please check the junk folder
if necessary. You can also make request for resending the activation email at
http://hk-gda.com/.
Q5: How many entries can I submit?
There is no limitation on the number of entries for each person or company.
Q6: What should I do if I do not know which category I shall participate in?
Among the 41 design categories, please select the most appropriate one. The organiser
reserves the right to change the category of the entry.
Q7: What language should be used in the online submission system?
The official language of the Global Design Awards is English. We respect all culture and
languages. However, as a prestigious international award in the region, renowned
experts from different countries will be invited to sit on the GDA Judging Panel. To
facilitate the assessment, we require entrants to provide information in English on the
Registration form, while supporting materials (optional) in their original language are
allowed. We will only make reference to the information submitted via the online
submission system, so please be aware of the upper/lower case letter(s) or space in the
spelling of the name of the entry/entrant.
Q8: How much is the fee per entry?
The regular Registration Fee for Global Design Awards 2016 is HKD1,500 per entry;
however, for entries submitted on or before 31 December 2015, an early bird Registration

under the design category of “Products”, after result notification please contact the Global
Design Awards Office for entry return (note: posters, CD-ROMs, perishables and
beverage items are not returnable). If the Global Design Awards Office does not hear
from the non-awardees about the return arrangements, such entries may be subject to
disposal. For the awardees, their entries will be kept for at least one year for exhibition

Q12: What kind of images should I upload?

Q14: How do I know if my actual product has reached the Global Design Awards
Office?
The Global Design Awards office will send you a confirmation email upon receipt of the
actual product fifteen (15) working days before judging.

involved in any of the participating entry.

Both awardees and non-awardees will be notified of the result in March 2016 (to be
confirmed). Public announcement will be made in April 2016 (exact date to be confirmed).
Q17: When will I get a reply to the email enquiry?
Due to the large amount of enquiry emails from the public entrants, please allow us three
full working days to reply to your enquiry emails. To avoid prolonged wait and delay of the
system during the peak period, we highly recommend entrants to send us your query at
least two weeks before the deadline.
In case of busy traffic of the Online Registration System during the peak period (such as
the time around early bird special or submission deadline), please appreciate that while
we will endeavour to reply to you as soon as we can, we cannot guarantee sufficient
manpower to handle the bulk of emails received in a timely manner.
