Potentate Message

David Barnekoff

Nobles & Ladies,

Liz and I would like to thank Dan and Susan Leonard and our “Aides Team for putting together a fantastic June Stated Meeting. They had a live animal show with monkeys, baboons, boa constrictor, tortoise and a gator. They had a fishing pond, lizard races, face painting, balloon tying and a dessert auction. To top it all off the Purveyors served us finger-lickin chicken.

Thank you to the 111 people who joined us on the Mississippi River trip. It was a trip filled with food, more food, nightly entertainment, Hop on Hop off buses, tours of Graceland, Antebellum homes, civil war battle fields, cotton fields, Southern cooking classes, and lots of gators.

We would also like to thank Gary Kiddie PP for organizing an afternoon at the Horse Races at the State Fair. He also included a great buffet dinner and admission to the State Fair. Thank you Gary for all you do for the Temple.

As summer comes to an end we are ramping up again with activities and events to get your Shrine juices flowing. We have something for everyone. Family, friends and potential Shriners are encouraged to attend with you.

We start off with the Nevada City Constitution Command Parade September 9. We encourage you to join us. Join a Shrine parade unit and ride, walk or drive in the parade. Meet our country’s current and former presidents and first ladies.

Attend the September 11 Stated Meeting. We have a September Fest theme with beer tasting. As you know Oc-tober Fest in Germany is actually in September. We have Charles Bamforth, who heads up the beer program at UC Davis, as our speaker.

This is a Stated Meeting you do not want to miss.

Join us on September 16 at the Ben Ali picnic grounds for the Ben Ali/Scottish Rite Picnic. 2nd Ceremonial Master Ralph Sahagun is putting together the best picnic of the season.

Magic Under the Stars, a black tie gala event, will be held September 29 at the Serrano Country Club. The net pro-ceeds from this event will support Liz’s First Ladies project, the Therapeutic Recreation & Child Life Program at Shriners Hospital for Children-Northern California. Purchase your tickets on line at www.shrinerschildrens.org/firstlady.

The Alcazar/Ben Ali Golf Tournament will take place at the beautiful and sometimes challenging Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course in Sacramento on October 13th. Contact our Oriental Guide David Lagala at (916) 834-1290 or [email protected] to sign up and for more details.

We still have some slots available for the Shriners Hospital Golf Tournament in Las Vegas from October 30 to No-vember 4th. Marshall a hole by day and party by night in Las Vegas. Contact Leigh Leidig at (916) 539-8749, or [email protected] for more details.

Our next Hot Sands Ceremonial will be October 27th, at Ben Ali Temple. Do you know any Masons who would like to join the Shrine? Petitions for Initiation are available on the Ben Ali web site, on the Ben Ali app, from your Shrine Blue Lodge Ambassador, or the Temple office. Contact High Priest & Prophet/Membership Chair Bill Wells at [email protected] or (209) 304-4853 for more information.

Housekeeping: If you are mailing correspondence to Ben Ali please send it to 3262 Marysville Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95815. We are looking to eliminate the PO Box in the near future.

Yours in the faith,

David Barnekoff

Ben Ali Shrine Ladies Holiday Craft Bazaar

It’s that time of year for me to start thinking about our Bazaar!

Save the date for December 1st 2018 - This will be the 50th year for the Bazaar.

The Bazaar will remain on the first Saturday in December (the 1st this year). We will again be at the Scottish Rite Center in Sacramento. We are keeping our same hours from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm.

For those of you new to Shrine, the items for sale have been made, bought or solicited by the ladies and nobles in the Shrine Clubs and Units. There are hundreds of handmade and store purchased items for sale.

All items for sale have been donated to the Bazaar. The monies go to the Ben Ali Shrine Transportation Fund which is used for transporting children and their families to the Shriners Children’s Hospital-Northern California for treatment.

At our “Lessons Learned” meeting in January we discussed the silent auctions and have decide to discon-tinue all silent auctions.

As many of you know, we have said this would be Margaret’s and my last year to organize the Bazaar. I am pleased to announce that Karen Garofano has stepped up to take on that job starting in 2019. Karen will be working with us this year.

Hopefully, I have already contacted the club/unit table chairpersons to send out the table reservation forms. If your club/unit did not participate in the Bazaar last year and you would like to participate this year, please call me (Carol Balbiani) for information and a table reservation form.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to call me. Next newsletter will have more information. Until then, enjoy the rest of your summer, stay cool, and keep working on those projects!

We had a great time at the Sutter Creek Parade, as we always do. It’s a short Parade, but it allows us time

to visit with the other Units and Clubs before the Parade. We were short some Patrolmen, as they had

other commitments. We sure could use more of you good looking Shriners to help fill our ranks, we pro-

vide a fancy uniform, customized Patrol Fez and a fun group of guys to hang out with.

Our next outing will be the Nevada City parade, we normally get there early and have breakfast, then off

to the VFW for some Bloody Mary’s before we line up and we also

have our annual elections between

Sutter Creek Parade is one of our favorites, we stop off at Dry Town Café on

our way there, however it was closed. Nothing dampers our spirts, so off

we went to Sutter Creek and we found another great restaurant that we

stumbled onto which will become our new favorite in the future. The pa-

rade is short but fun to see all the Shriners we don’t see otherwise.

There was some confusion about the Oasis at Bill and Debbi Wells, but we

made it and what a great Oasis it was, great job on their part. Normally, we

go to the Italian Picnic grounds after the parade as I’m sure some of you did

which is always fun and great food. We normally have our Unit meeting at

the Picnic grounds, but that didn’t happen this time. See you all at the Ne-

vada City Parade in September 9th. We still have room to squeeze you into

our Unit if you have a Classic car or just a Classic driver, give Leigh Leidig a

call @ 916-539-8744 and my email is [email protected]

Now is the time to register as a volunteer for the Shriners Hospitals Open Golf Tournament. Ben Ali

will be recognized as the sponsor and marshals of hole #11 for the four days of the tournament. This

is a great honor for Ben Ali as there are only two other temples who sponsor holes, El Riad of So. Da-

kota and Gizeh of Canada

Ben Ali members, family, and friends are encouraged to volunteer. A step by step guide to register is

on the Ben Ali website. Marshal training will be provided. There are also two optional events: A Kick

Off Your Heels Women's Day on Tuesday, October 30th, and a Shriners BBQ on Thursday, November

1st. More info on these later, but it is important to register now.

Let's show our support for the Shriners Hospitals and have fun as well.

Ben Ali Ceremonial—-New Members

Shriners Hospital for Children Northern California

One more way Shriners Hospitals for Children improves the lives of our patients

Excellence in Photography: Congratulations Julia Serat! Our Medical Media manager and

photographer extraordinaire recently captured yet another award for her work. Music to Heal

By received the Award of Excellence in the Still Media Portraiture category of the 2018 Bi-

oimages visual media competition, sponsored by the BioCommunications Association. The

award-winning photograph shows Eunghee Cho (son of re-

searcher Kiho Cho), playing his cello. Julia says the photo-

graph was motivated by the healing power of music. In her

words: “Shriners Hospital offers a unique opportunity for mu-

sical expression through the Atrium Series performances and

music therapy for patients. After listening to the beautiful

classical music performed in the atrium by accomplished mu-

sicians Eunghee Cho and his colleagues, I envisioned creat-

ing an image that would illustrate the healing power of music

through live performance. In the photo studio, I created a set-

ting that would depict a low key and dramatic image, using

dark tones and high-contrast lighting. The term ‘low-key’ in

music also relates to quiet

sound or deep musical

tone, thus inspiring this vis-

ual interpretation.”

Several of Julia’s photographs have been selected for display

in the Children’s Hospital Association’s bi-annual, juried ex-

hibits that tour nationally.

On another high note, Music to Heal By also won a Best of

Show award at the Yolo County Fair in 2017 in the Advanced/

Professional Photography division

Cuba:

Cuba is a Caribbean island nation under communist rule. It has sugar-white beaches and is dotted with tobacco fields,

which play a part in the production of the country's legendary cigars. The capital, Havana, is lined with pastel houses,

1950s-era cars and Spanish-colonial architecture in the 16th-century core, Old Havana. Salsa music plays in the dance

clubs and cabaret shows are performed at the famed Tropicana.

For the seventh year in a row, Shriners Hospitals for Children — North-

ern California ranks among the nation’s elite providers of pediatric or-

thopaedic care — achieving the status as one of the top 50 hospitals

in the U.S. News & World Report 2018-2019 rankings of children’s hos-

pitals in the United States. Our Northern California hospital consistently

ranks as a leader in pediatric orthopaedic care in conjunction with UC

Davis Children’s Hospital. “The ranking is a reflection of the quality and

complexity of care we provide children as well as the growth and vol-

ume of our program,” says Margaret Bryan, hospital administrator and

CEO. U.S. News introduced the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings in 2007 to help families of

sick children find the best medical care available.

A thoughtful donation from the parents of a former hospital patient helped a young burn pa-tient learn to walk independently.

Jason and Valerie Carmichael wanted kids

treated at Shriners Hospital to benefit from

special equipment that was used by their

daughter when she was an orthopaedic pa-

tient. Physical therapist Ingrid Parry, said the

KidWalk gait trainer they donated helped

young Isabella learn how to balance without

falling and build confidence in her ability to

walk. A week after she started using the

equipment, Isabella began walking on her

own.

Words of Praise: The letter below is from a grateful parent. It was sent by email to clinic manager

Robert Tolbert, thanking Vedant Kulkarni, M.D., and Shriners Hospital for exceptional care:

I wanted to take a moment and share with you how wonderful our experience has been over

the past 4 years with Dr. Kulkarni. He has performed 3 surgeries on our oldest daughter, and

corrected a fusion, tibial rotation, and hardware removal. Our daughter is extremely fond of

Dr. Kulkarni, and our family is forever grateful for the amazing work, support, love and guid-

ance he has shown over the years. You must be so proud to have him on your team! We cer-

tainly are! I didn't want his work, efforts, and continuous dedication to the children of the

Shriners to go unnoticed. He is a wonderful soul, and so talented at his job.

Thank you for your time and for the services provided to our daughter over these years

through the Shriners Hospital! The work you all do is a blessing to everyone involved!

This outing took place in May on the island of Oahu. Our friend, Gail Longstreth, took Susan Eg-gleston and me to lunch at The Alley Restaurant at Aiea Bowl, which was featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. It has creative Asian-inspired takes on classic comfort eats served in a low key bowling alley diner. We had a good time having our pictures taken and looking over the menu. Our waitress Mimi was a lot of fun and gave us lots of time and help with the menu. Gail finally decided on the yummy chicken sandwich with fries and chocolate insanity cake for dessert. She’s not very adventuresome when it comes to eating, plus she’s a picky eater, and when she reads this, I will get a thump on the ole noggin. In her defense, I must say she did en-joy her lunch. Susan ordered the house salad and added chicken salad to that salad. She wasn’t very adventuresome either, and for dessert she had Mama Muya’s chocolate cake; and when Susan reads this there will probably be another thump on my noggin. However, I must admit it was very good. You know, I always taste everyone’s food. Well, how else am I going to know if it’s really tasty. Now, I selected the oxtail soup-alley style. This was one of Guy’s featured items on his show. It was garnished with peanuts, shitake mushrooms, and baby bok choy, served with rice, Mom’s ponzu sauce, ginger and parsley. It came in bowls which were stacked and I had to ask Mimi how you ate it. For dessert I had lemon crunch cake.

We were surprised to meet Chef Glen and he was kind enough to take time for a picture taking session.

Since a number of you have time shares on Oahu, I thought it would be nice to write about The Alley in case you would be interested in eating there sometime. The Alley can be found at 99-115 Aiea Heights Dr. #310, Aiea, HI 96701. Telephone: 808-488-6854. I hope enjoy The Alley as much as we did.

Until next time take care, God Bless and remember, LIFE’S SHORT….EAT DESSERT FIRST!!

Life is in fact Short sooooo... EAT DESERT FIRST
