This week we have the space to reflect on two of the most well-known: “…our hearts are restless until they rest in you…” and “…late have I loved you…” Let’s put them in context the better to appreciate their inspiration. The first quote comes right at the beginning of the Confessions, Book 1 Chapter 1. In the opening line Augustine addresses himself to God, praising God’s greatness, power and wisdom. He goes on to say that because human beings are part of God’s creation it is only natural to want to praise their Creator, despite that humans are finite creatures with an inclination to sin. Then come the famous words, which must be read in the context of the complete sentence of which they are the final part: “You have prompted us, that we should delight to praise you, for you have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they come to rest in you.” Today Augustine may have used the modern expression that we are “hard-wired” to experience divine life eternally. The second famous excerpt from the Confessions (Book 10) sees St Augustine wrestling like Job with the problem of suffering, adversity, trial, and indeed the sorrow that comes from God’s apparent absence in times of trouble. He realises that the problem stems from looking in the wrong places for God or from looking for the ‘quick fix’ solution. He quickly adds that he is speaking about himself, not others, and then bursts out in prayer: Late have I loved you, Beauty so ancient and so new, late have I loved you! You were within, but I outside, seeking there for you, and upon the shapely things you have made I rushed headlong – I, misshapen. You were with me, but I was not with you. They held me back far from you, those things which would have no being, were they not in you. You called, shouted, broke through my deafness; you flared, blazed, banished my blindness; you lavished your fragrance, I gasped; and now I pant for you; I tasted you, and now I hunger and thirst; you touched me, and I burned for your peace. Augustine literally comes alive. He has realised after being such “a burden to myself”, that only when he clings to God with his whole being will he be fully alive – alive because filled with God’s life. Once again looking back over his entire life, starting with his pre-conscious stage of infancy (when he suspects that he was a bit of a naughty brat and a trial to his parents) through his turbulent adolescence; his years of struggle with chastity; his arrogant disdain for the Christian faith, he knows he can finally praise God for allowing him the grace even “late” in his life, through no merit of his own but only by pure gift. And so he concludes: “On your exceedingly great mercy, and on that alone, rests all my hope.” Live the Word THE WEEK AHEAD (KEY: SOLEMNITY; FEAST; Memorial; (Optional Memorial ) Ab=Abbot; D=Doctor; P=Pope; V=Virgin; Pr=Priest Mon 20 Aug St Bernard, Ab D Ezekiel 24:15-24; Deuteronomy 32:18-21; Matthew 19:16-22 Love seeks no cause beyond itself and no fruit; it is its own fruit, its own enjoyment. St Augustine (3)READERS OF the Catholic Link relatively

familiar with St Augustine will no doubt be on the lookout in our presentation of

his Confessions for quotations of some of his more famous words. This week we have the space to reflect on two of the most well-known: “…our hearts are restless until they rest in you…” and “…late have I loved you…” Let’s put them in context the better to appreciate their inspiration.

The f irst quote comes right at the beginning of the Confessions, Book 1 Chapter 1. In the opening line Augustine addresses himself to God, praising God’s greatness, power and wisdom. He goes on to say that because human beings are part of God’s creation it is only natural to want to praise their Creator, despite that humans are f inite creatures with an inclination to sin.

The second f amous excerpt f rom the Confessions (Book 10) sees St Augustine wrestling like Job with the problem of suffering, adversity, trial, and indeed the sorrow that comes from God’s apparent absence in times of trouble. He realises that the problem stems from looking in the wrong places for God or from looking for the ‘quick f ix’ solution. He quickly adds that he

is speaking about himself, not others, and then bursts out in prayer:

Late have I loved you, Beauty so ancient and so new, late have I loved you! You were within, but I outside, seeking there for

you, and upon t he sha pe l y things you have made I rushed headlong – I , misshapen. You were with me, but I was not with you. They held me back far from you, those th ings which would have no being,

were they not in you.You called, shouted, broke through my deafness; you flared, blazed, banished my blindness; you lavished your fragrance, I gasped; and now I pant for you;I tasted you, and now I hunger and thirst; you touched me, and I burned for your peace.

Augustine literally comes alive. He has realised after being such “a burden to myself”, that only when he clings to God with his whole being will he be fully alive – alive because f illed with God’s life. Once again looking back over his entire life, starting with his pre-conscious stage of infancy (when he suspects that he was a bit of a naughty brat and a trial to his parents) through his turbulent adolescence; his years of struggle with chastity; his arrogant disdain for the Christian faith, he knows he can f inally praise God for allowing him the grace even “late” in his life, through no merit of his own but only by pure gift. And so he concludes: “On your exceedingly great mercy, and on that alone, rests all my hope.”
