P a g e 2 P u b l i c S e r v i c e Department Highlights June 2020

Residential Trash Collection Volumes Increase during COVID-19 Rumpke drivers have been working around the clock to keep neighborhoods and businesses clean and green during the current health crisis. With more people at home, Rumpke is seeing a signifi-cant increase in trash placed curbside. Trash volumes have increased up to 30% in certain neigh-borhoods throughout central Ohio. The increase in waste volumes has caused delay in service and overworked drivers. The public service director attended an online meeting with other Central Ohio Consortium members to discuss difficulties that Rumpke was experiencing with increased residential waste due to COVID-19. Rumpke is asking suburban communities to help get the mes-sage out on ways residents can help collection efficiency on trash day. External messaging dis-cussed included residents consider donation options for unwanted items, not placing large quanti-ties of trash out for disposal at once, but rather over several weeks, not placing items out over 50lbs in weight, making sure the trash is visible at the curb and not placing hazardous material out.

Forestry Specialist Hired New Forestry Specialist Nicholas McPherson started his employment on June 1st with the public service department. Nick will be working alongside City Forester Marylou Bohannon and Forest-ry Specialist Chase Loughman. He resides in Hebron, Ohio and has 12 years of experience in the tree care industry. Nick has worked for some large production companies and has managed his own business. With his friendly disposition and passion for urban forestry, Nick will certainly have a positive impact as a team member within the service department.

Fleet Mechanic Steve Saunders Retires On June 12th, Fleet Mechanic Steve Saunders officially retired from his service with the City of New Albany. He dedicated fourteen years of service with the public service department after working many years as a mechanic at the Krieger Ford dealership. Steve’s commitment to ensur-ing that our fleet was topnotch will be missed. He always participated in our department events and training, such as our employee roadside trash pickup event, snow and ice control training, and city sponsored Touch-A-Truck event. Now a grandfather of two, we wish him well in his retire-ment and new adventures.

Professional Development The city held a Lunch and Learn GoToMeeting on Recipe Modification. Heather McCormick from Mount Carmel provided a short presentation on meal make-overs and talked about the ingre-dients and spices in food. Some city staff shared a recipe of their own and talked about the ingre-dients. Maintenance employees Carl McNeal and Curtis Reed participated in camera truck training and were involved in a manufacturer demonstration on SL-RAT System using acoustic technology to provide blockage assessments for sewers. Forestry Specialist Chase Loughman and Nick McPherson attended online training on pest man-agement to preserve tree health. Seasonal maintenance employees Colin Ryan and Catherine Ryan participated in an video train-ing for Work Zone Safety.

Proposal for Solar Energy Project at Service Facility Joseph Stefanov, City Manager has been working with Chip Fellows, Council Member and Wil-liam Resch, Clean Energy Consultant and Mark Nemec, Public Service Director on a possible project to install solar energy panels on the roof of the service facility garage. Mr. Resch has con-sulted with Third Sun Solar to quantify the benefits of providing solar power energy for the public service facility. The city is looking to capture not only environmental, but also investment and usage benefits of using solar power as a clean energy source. Third Sun Solar is a full service solar energy developer providing integrated design, construction and operation services. Third Sun Solar is the Midwest premier full service solar company with a mission to accelerate the shift to Clean Energy. The company serves commercial, governmental and institutional clients in the Midwest region (an nationally for certain projects). A Solar Feasibility Study and project proposal was submitted to the city from Third Sun Solar. The system details include the installation of roof mounted solar array, with Tier 1, 72 cell solar units. The solar panels will be capable of producing up to 86.0 kW-AC power and 110.4 kW-DC power during optimum sun radiance. Third Sun Solar is capable of constructing a turnkey installa-tion compliant with all codes and technical requirements as well as industry best practices and using world-class high performance equipment. In their proposal, they would be responsible for coordination with the local utility company for the installation of a net meter to keep track of all the power the solar system produces. The solar energy produced by the array will be consumed first by the building electrical systems before any energy is purchased through the utility. A formal decision will be made by New Albany Council Members at the City 2021 Capital Work-shop held in September.

Doggy Waste Station As part of the City Stormwater Management Program, the public service department installs and maintains doggy waste stations throughout the city. This year service crews have col-lected 236 waste bags which equates to approximately 1.3 tons of dog waste. Maintenance Worker Andrew Love recent-ly installed a total of three new waste stations at designated entrances to the Rose Run Park.

Healthy New Albany Parking Lot The public service department is responsible for the mainte-nance of city grounds and properties. Seasonal worker Colin Ryan is shown here cleaning up after removing overgrown shrubs at the end of the parking spaces at the Healthy New Albany building. The shrubs were causing sight issues for vehicles which prompted the removal. Other crew members involved were Catherine Ryan, Andrew Love and Ian Hurst. Urban Forestry Activity After a recent storm there were many broken and dangerous branches hanging from trees all over the city. Honeylocust trees have weaker branch structures and are more susceptible to damage during high wind events. Forestry Specialist Nick McPherson used a 21 foot telescoping pole saw to remove hanging limbs and properly pruned the broken branches. In June, the forestry crew has pruned over 600 trees. American and Ohio Flags Fly in Village Center Annually service department crews install the American flag within the Village Center from city streetlight poles. Over the last several years the city decided to introduce the Ohio flag so that the American and Ohio flags are placed alternating on every other light pole giving a variety of patriotic flags. The New Albany Community has given the service department positive feedback for the recent changes and also appreciate the hanging flower baskets seen in town.
