MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Parishioners and Extended Family Members,

Praised be Jesus Christ!

The Fourth of July has become associated with a long weekend and cookouts. For there to be a birth of our
nation, there had to be a vision and a “blueprint” for achieving that vision. For these, we thank our nation’s
Founding Fathers.

It was Thomas Jefferson who penned our nation’s Declaration of Independence. (Who authored the Bill of
Rights? The answer is below.) It is indeed a brilliant and enduring document. We read that all have the right to
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We also read that the truths proclaimed are to be considered
“selfevident.” God “endows”, that is, is the Giver, the only Giver, of rights, rights that allow us to express
ourselves as human persons. It is the role of the government to ensure all have the opportunity to exercise
them. We thank our Founding Fathers for having the courage to bring them to speech in our nation’s
Declaration of Independence so that they could be immortalized by passing them down from generation to
generation.

To this day, some governments still deny these. Just look at Tiananmen Square, China and how the
government strictly forbids anyone to commemorate what occurred there in 1989 and how they are so willing
to take what freedom Hong Kong still had away, even at such financial expense to them. Russia continues to
subvert any opposition to the powers that be there. And, of course, there is North Korea. As crazy, as
maddening it can seem to live in this country, we must remind ourselves that our form of government is the
most appealing worldwide. We pray that we, as a nation and as individuals, may live up to the principles and
values it enshrines more and more each and every day.

As we take the time to celebrate our nation’s 244th birthday, let us keep in mind the rights to life, liberty, and
the pursuit of happiness as well as how much has been sacrificed to both make them and keep them a reality.
Let us pray that more and more people each day may enjoy the same freedoms we do and that we come to a
deeper appreciation of just how precious they are as we enjoy them daily.

Happy Fourth of July and Happy Birthday, America!!

Gratefully yours in Christ,
Fr. Steve

Summer Supply Kits Needed
for Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester.
Fr. "Doc" Conway of St. Peter's in Dorchester came and
spoke to our 8th graders during their retreat this past Fall,
and he spoke about his ministry to help those in need and
the hardship of many of the families in Dorchester. Just
before COVID19 hit Massachusetts, the students had
been planning service projects inspiredby "Doc". All the
planned projects were stopped, but one student kept in
touch with the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester and
recently asked how St. Edward could support them...they
need summer supply kits for the children:
packs of markers, crayons, scissors and glue sticks.
We have a collection box in the Narthex and will be
collecting these supplies until July 9.
LIVE THE LITURGY
INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

The flesh is our old self of yesterday and the one we left
behind in baptism. It is the self of doubts and fears, sin and
error, reluctance, untamed passion, and errors in judgment.
It is also the self of missed opportunities and roads
untraveled. Although we were baptized many years ago,
every day is another day to live, not according to the flesh
of yesterday with its regrets and misgivings, but rather to
live the life of the spirit of today and tomorrow. The burdens
of our personal baggage and of life itself can weigh us
down. The love of Jesus Christ and the life of the spirit can
pick us up, refresh us, and provide us with the hope for new
opportunities and discoveries. Because we have been
baptized in Christ, we need not be anxious about what we
did or did not do yesterday or anxious about what will come
tomorrow. We need only to seek out the love that is before
us, around us, and in us and learn.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED
Kissing the Altar at Mass
Question:
Why do priests kiss the altar at the start of Mass?
Answer:
Our churches and chapels are filled with symbols. We might think of the
more common symbols (like the crucifix, statues, stainedglass windows,
vestment color and altar cloths) as well as major symbols (such as the
paschal candle and the baptismal font). But there are some things that we
can take for granted in our sacred spaces, because unfortunately, they
seem to just be part of the building, including three of the main symbols of
our liturgy: the ambo (lectern), the chair for the priest celebrant, and the
altar.

These three objects are placed in a specially designated area called the
sanctuary. They are the places where the Word of God is proclaimed,
where the priest prays and presides at the celebration, and where the bread
and wine are offered by the priest during the Eucharistic Prayer. Although
each of these objects is sacred because of the role they play in our worship,
the altar holds a special place. In a document containing the rules and in-
structions for the Mass the “General Instruction of the Roman Missal”
we read: “The altar on which the Sacrifice of the Cross is made present
under sacramental signs is also the table of the Lord to which the People of
God is called together to participate in the Mass, as well as the center of the
thanksgiving that is accomplished throughout the Eucharist” (no. 296).

One of the ways that we recognize the importance of the altar is when the
priest and deacon kiss the altar at the beginning of Mass. Kissing is an
ancient act of devotion. Remember, we also kiss the cross on Good Friday,
and the deacon or priest kisses the “Book of the Gospels” after the Gospel
is proclaimed. This act of devotion reminds us that the altar is a symbol of
Jesus, the “living stone” (see 1 Peter 2:4), the foundation stone of our faith.
It is a symbol gesture, but it is a powerful reminder of the One on whom our
faith is built and in whose name we gather as the “household of faith” (see
Galatians 6:10).

Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults (RCIA)
Have you ever thought about becoming
Catholic? Would you like to know more
about God and the Church?
Or, are you already baptized but still lack
the Sacraments of Holy Communion and
Confirmation?
If so, RCIA is for you! RCIA is a process
of learning about and experiencing the Catholic faith with
others in a friendly, smallgroup setting. It can lead to full
membership in the Church through the Sacraments, but is
also an openended process of asking questions and
exploring. Come, discover what you've been missing!
If you are interested or know someone who might
be, please contact Fr. Gregory directly or call
our parish offices.
The Holy Eucharist has been placed in a window
on parish property so that parishioners can be in
the presence of and venerate our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ.

At St. Edward’s,
the Holy Eucharist will be
displayed in its monstrance in
the windows of the main
doors to the church.

At St. Jude’s,
the Holy Eucharist will be
able to be viewed in its
monstrance in the window of
the church’s sacristy
overlooking the main
parking lot.

Please stop by, even if it may be in your car, and
take a moment to pray to our Lord as you gaze
upon him in the Holy Eucharist.

Solidarity Prayer for a Pandemic
May we who are merely inconvenienced
remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have no risk factors remember those
most vulnerable.
May we who have the luxury of working from
home remember those who must choose
between preserving their health or making their
rent.
May we who have the flexibility to care for our
children when their schools close remember
those who have no options.
May we who have to cancel our trips remember
those that have no place to go.
May we who are losing our margin money in the
tumult of the economic market remember those
who have no margin at all.
May we who settle in for a quarantine at home
remember those who have no home.
During this time when we cannot physically wrap
our arms around each other, let us yet find ways
to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors.
Amen.
