THE TEAGUE RYAN WRESTLING COMPLEX: Tom Ryan, the current Ohio State University wrestling coach who served in the same capacity for the Pride from 1995 through 2006, was the guest speaker at the 2009 Hofstra Wrestling Brunch on Sunday, January 25 at the Hofstra University Club. Hofstra Head Wrestling Coach Tom Shifflet announced at the brunch the

Hofstra Wrestling Project that will provide the program with the finest wrestling facility on Long Island and one of the best wrestling facilities in the northeast. Once completed, the renovated home of Pride Wrestling will feature: a new wrestling floor and wall mats; a new cardio room; a student-athlete lounge; a sports medicine room equipped with state-of-the-art technology; and a refurbished coaches office suite. The complex will be named The Teague Ryan Wrestling Complex, in memory of Tom and Lynette Ryan’s youngest son who passed away suddenly at age 5 in February, 2004. The Teague Ryan Wrestling Complex will include the Ray Downey, Sr. Wrestling Room and the Rudy Fiorvanti Strength and Conditioning Room. Downey, Chief, Special Operations for the New York City Fire Department, was killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Two of Chief Downey’s sons, Joe and Ray, Jr., wrestled for Hofstra in the 1980s. Fiorvanti, who passed away in 2007, was a three-sport athlete at Hofstra in the early 1970s who captained Pride teams in wrestling, football and lacrosse. To make a gift in support of the Teague Ryan Wrestling Complex, please call Daniel Solow at (516) 463-1944. LOU RUGGIRELLO: Junior Lou Ruggirello, who placed second at this year’s Southern Scuffle, has posted 16 victories by fall this season. He is a two-time CAA champion. He has won 16 of his last 18 matches. STEVE BONANNO: Freshman Steve Bonanno earned his first national ranking on Jan. 5th, coming in at number 16 in the WIN poll. He slipped one place to 17th on January 12th and the 19th before falling out on January 26th following a win over Ohio State’s Nikko Triggas. He is now 20th in the WIN poll. He came up big for the Pride at 125 pounds in their victory at Penn State in November. The newcomer from Wantagh, Long Island, New

Bonanno was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 12 after recording a 9-1 major decision against North Carolina State's Mike Moreno. A 2008 New York State High School champion, Bonanno has placed in the top six of all four tournaments in which he has competed this season. He placed third at the Mat Town Open, fifth at the Missouri Open and the Southern Scuffle, and sixth in the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic. division of the Missouri Open and placed sixth at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic. CONFERENCE STREAKS END: The loss to the Monarchs of ODU in the CAA Duals snapped Hofstra's 63-match (62-0-1) conference undefeated streak as well as the Pride's 60-match conference winning streak. Hofstra, which competed in the East Coast Wrestling Association (ECWA) when the streak began before joining the CAA for the 2001-02 season, had not dropped a conference contest since a 28-10 ECWA loss to Rider on February 17, 1999. Hofstra was 6-0-1 in 1999-2000, 6-0-0 in 2000-01, 2001-02, 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2007-08, 7-0-0 in 2002-03 and 8-0-0 in 2003-04. The Pride was 5-1 in the CAA in 2008-09. PRIDE PLACE EIGHTH AT THE SOUTHERN SCUFFLE: Four Pride wrestlers placed in the top six of their respective weight classes, including a runner-up finish by junior Lou Ruggirello, as Hofstra finished eighth in the 2008 Southern Scuffle at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center on Dec. 29-30. The Pride finished with 80 points in the 28-team, two-day tournament, with the Big Red of Cornell winning the team title with 139 points. Edinboro (134) was second followed by Kent State with 126 points, Virginia Tech with 107.5 points, and North Carolina with 104 points. Navy (98) was sixth and Virginia (88) was seventh. After sending two wrestlers to the finals of last year's Scuffle, Ruggirello was the Pride's lone representative in the finals at 133 pounds against Edinboro's Ricky Deubel. Ruggirello, who defeated Deubel, 9-3, in a dual match last season, battled with no score through two periods. In the third, he immediately escaped from the down position to take a 1-0 lead. But with 46 seconds remaining Deubel took the Walden, New York native down to take a 2-1 advantage and did not him escape the rest of the way for the victory. Junior Jonny Bonilla-Bowman captured third place at 157 pounds. Bonilla-Bowman opened the second day with an 18-8 major decision over Navy's Glenn Shober but dropped a 15-3 decision to Edinboro's Gregor Gillespie in the championship semifinals. Senior Alton Lucas looked to be on track to defend his 2007 Scuffle title at 174 pounds but was derailed by an ankle injury in the semifinals. The West Babylon, New York native opened the second day with a 3-2 decision over Old Dominion's Eric Decker in the quarterfinals before suffering the ankle injury early in the semifinal match against Virginia's Chris Heinrich. HOFSTRA COACH TOM SHIFFLET: Tom Shifflet, a four-time NCAA Championships qualifier and a three-time All-American as a student-athlete at Edinboro University, became the 10th head wrestling coach in Hofstra’s storied wrestling history on May 17, 2006. His first season as the Hofstra Head Wrestling Coach in 2006-07 was one for the record books. Shifflet directed the Pride to an 18-4-2 dual record, a final record season ranking of ninth, the program’s sixth straight Colonial Athletic Association championship and the school’s seventh consecutive conference title, an upset victory of top-ranked Minnesota in November, a sixth-place finish at the NWCA National Duals and, most importantly, a seventh-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Championships in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Along the way, the Pride developed four All-Americans, seven conference champions including the CAA Wrestler of the Year and the Rookie of the Year. For Shifflet’s efforts, he was named the Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year. Last season Shifflet directed the program to its 11th consecutive winning season with a 13-8 overall record and a 6-0 conference while leading Hofstra to its seventh straight CAA wrestling championship and eighth consecutive conference title. Along the way the Pride faced 13 Top 25 opponents and posted victories over #4 Iowa State, #13 Edinboro and #22 Old Dominion. Hofstra placed third at the Southern Scuffle, 10th in the Cliff Keen-Las Vegas Invitational, first in the CAA Championships with three conference champions and seven national qualifiers, and 15th in the NCAA Championships with two All-Americans and the Gorrarian Award winner. Shifflet came to Hofstra after four seasons as head wrestling coach at UNC Greensboro. While at UNCG, he created and organized the annual 35-team Southern Scuffle wrestling tournament, which is one of the largest and more competitive Division I regular season tournaments in the country. During his tenure at UNC Greensboro Shifflet recorded a 32-32 dual meet record and had nine wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. A three-time All-American and a four-time national qualifier as a student-athlete at national powerhouse Edinboro University from 1992 through 1995, Shifflet began his coaching career as an assistant at Georgia State University in1995, helping the Panthers post back-to-back winning seasons, and develop three conference champions and four NCAA qualifiers. In 1997, Shifflet left Georgia State to begin a five-year tenure as an assistant coach at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. During his time with the Big Red, Shifflet coached 24 NCAA qualifiers, three NCAA All-Americans and helped head coach Rob Koll to a pair of Ivy League championships in 1999 and 2001. More importantly, Cornell was also consistently ranked among the nation's top-15 programs. The last Big Red recruiting class, that he was involved with, placed fifth at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City. After five seasons at Cornell, the Amherst, New York native was named the head wrestling coach at UNC Greensboro on May 17, 2002. In 2003-04 the Spartans claimed their first winning season since 1998-99, posting a 9-6 overall record with the nine victories ranking as the third most in the program's 12-year history. Shifflet guided UNCG to the most wins in school history during the 2004-05 season as the Spartans recorded a 12-5 overall

record, 4-1 in the Southern Conference. In 2005-06 UNCG tied a school-record by sending four wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Championships in Oklahoma City and the Spartans finished tied for 31st with Harvard in the final Championship standings. The Spartans finished the season with an 11-6 dual match record and a 4-1 mark in the Southern Conference. As a wrestler, Shifflet registered 118 wins for the Edinboro Fighting Scots and was coached by the legendary Bruce Baumgartner. Competing at 142 pounds, Shifflet finished seventh at nationals as a freshman, sixth as a sophomore and third as a senior. He is one of four three-time All-Americans in school history. Shifflet also received the Eastern Wrestling League Freshman of the Year Award in 1992 and the EWL Wrestler of the Year Award in 1995. He was inducted into both the Edinboro University and the EWL Halls of Fame in 2006. In 1996 Shifflet placed seventh in the final U.S. Olympic Trials in freestyle wrestling at 149.5 pounds. One year later he placed sixth in both the World Team Freestyle Trials and the U.S. Open. HOFSTRA HELPS NYC FOODBANK: Taking a brief break from their preparations for their home match against the Wolfpack of North Carolina State on Jan. 11, the Hofstra Pride wrestling team volunteered at the Food Bank for New York City and packed 5,700 pounds of food to be distributed throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Pride Head Wrestling Coach Tom Shifflet, his staff and student-athletes volunteered on Wednesday and Thursday, January 7-8 at The Food Bank’s 90,000 square foot warehouse in Hunts Point, Bronx, to break down items, repackage food and non-food products, and stack the boxes into sizes suitable for distribution to the city's soup kitchens and food pantries. The Pride’s 5,700 pounds of food will provide approximately 4,385 meals to the needy. “While we are in the middle of our season, I think that it is important that we take stock of all the gifts that we have and help those less fortunate,” Shifflet said. “Our team was honored to be able to help the great people at the Food Bank in their mission to provide free food to the city’s hungry. Every member of our team was humbled by the experience and we look forward to returning to help in the future.” THE HOFSTRA WRESTLING BLOG: Find out the inside story of Hofstra wrestling and what the Pride wrestlers are thinking on the Takedown Blog on the Hofstra wrestling homepage at http://www.hofstra.edu/Athletics/Wrestling/index_Wrestling.cfm. But the Hofstra newcomer took fifth place on a medical forfeit by Virginia's Ross Gittomer. Bonanno is now 18-8 on the year. Senior Alton Lucas looked to be on track to defend his 2007 Scuffle title at 174 pounds but was derailed by an ankle injury in the semifinals. The West Babylon, New York native opened the day with a 3-2 decision over Old Dominion's Erick Decker in the

quarterfinals before suffering the ankle injury early in the semifinal match against Virginia's Chris Heinrich. The Buckeyes improved to 9-1 on the season while Hofstra falls to 7-3. On his first return to Hofstra since leaving the Pride in 2006 after 11 seasons as head coach, Ohio State coach Tom Ryan and his family were honored at halftime with the official announcement that Hofstra's soon-to-renovated and upgraded facility would be named the Teague Ryan Wrestling Complex, in memory of his son who passed away at age five in 2004. Hofstra also honored the family of FDNY Chief Ray Downey with the naming of the Pride wrestling room in his memory, and the family of Rudy Fiorvanti with the naming of their new strength and conditioning room in his memory. Downey died on September 11, 2001 in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center while Fiorvanti was a three-sport athlete and team captain for the Pride in the early 1970s. In a see-saw battle throughout Ohio State's fourth-ranked junior Lance Palmer (16-2) made a first period takedown and a reversal in the second stand up on the way to a 5-0 victory over Pride freshman P.J. Gillespie (16-13) at 149 pounds. Hofstra's unranked junior Jonny Bonilla-Bowman (16-6) wore out OSU's 15th-ranked Jason Johnstone (17-7) for a 15-6 major decision at 157 pounds to give the Pride a 4-3 lead. The Pride regained the lead at 174 pounds as 11th-ranked senior Alton Lucas (17-4) took a 2-1 lead into the third period on the way to a 6-2 victory over junior Dave Rella (13-8). Hofstra wrestled up its usual 184-pounder Ben Clymer and sent senior Anthony Tortora (14-13) up against OSU's defending national champion, junior Mike Pucillo (8-0). Tortora battled valiantly before Pucillo posted a 16-4 major decision to give the Buckeyes a 10-7 lead in the match.
