The USS PASSU?,1PSIC celebrated New Ycara Day by conducting ~eplenishment operations in th~ combat zone off North Vietnam (Yanlteo station). During this period conducting <J:>mbat support operations, PASSUMPSIC replenished forty-one :Jtlipa and transferred over eight million gallons of fuel.

On 17 April, PASSUMPSIC departed Susebo for Subic Bay. · How,jver, on 19 April a scheciule change l·ras reced ved directing

PAS3UMPSIC to Yankee Station. During this trip to Yankee St1:~ion it was decided by the crew that the official nickname fo: PASSUMPSIC personnel would be the Pumping PASSUMPSIC P.;:lcats.

From 22 "to 28 April PASSUMPSIC repJ.enished twenty-five 1nits of TasJ;: J:i"orce 77 on Yankee Stat.ion and arrived back .n Subic Bay on 30 April for four daymof upkeep. After loading cargo ammunition on 3 May, PASSUHPSIC headed for another full swing through Market Time and Yankee Station. Between 7 and 12 May, PASSUMPSIC replenished 49 ships and transferred over f:ive million gallons of fuel.

On 14 Uay the ship entered Hong Kong Harbor for a deserved five days of rest and relm:ation. The 'stay was short but the crew thoroughly enjoyed it. Every nook and cranny on board seemed crai'1llTled wii:h the various bargains available in Hong ICong.

Froo Hong Kong, PASSUMPSIC sailed to Subic Bay for a one­day tum-around before heading to the "line" for the last tL~e during this deployment.

From 24 to 28 May, PASSUMPSIC carried the replenishment load alone on Yankee Station. Twenty-five ships were re­plenished making·a grand total of 362 underway replenishments for the deployment and pumping over forty-nine million gallons of fuel.

Entering Subic Bay for the last t~ne on 30 May, prepa­rati9ns were made for departing WESTPAC. PASSUMPSIC departed for home on l June. Passage through San Bernadina Stxaits was made and the great circle to Hawaii lay ahead •.

On 3 June the ship received a message indicating that a freighter, the ss BESSEI4ER V!CiORY, required medical assis­tance. A rende2vous was effected and the Chief Hospi'l:sl Corpsman was sent ~o the fr~igh~er by motor whaleboat. Medical asaistance was 1·enderod ruid PASSUMPSIC con·tinuad on to Pearl Harbor. ·

With favorable se~o.and full power, lost time wao quickly recouped. Cargo fuel tanks were clean~a and much adminis­trative and maintenance uork was accompl.iahcd prior i;o arrival at Pearl Harbor, as scheduled, 011 14 June.

Friday morning, 29 November, underway for WESTPAC. With families and friends B"i::anding on the pie:i:, PASSUMPSIC slipped quietly away from Long Beach. USS ASI-lTABULi"\. (AO 51) rendezvoused outside the breakwater for a consolidation to top off cargo fuel for the transit t·~cst. ·

Rough seas and hc:;avy weather was the order· of the day for the ·western transi·;:. Due to the low fraeboard, extensive water daraage to spaces on the main dack was encountered. The ship slowly fell behind ·che position of intended movement. However:, near the end of the crossing, the seas calmeci and lest time was gradually zegained. PASSUMPSIC transit€d the Sti:-aits of San Bernardino and uri:iv~ed at Subic Bay on 20 DecGmber.
