Research Title : ENGLISH WRITING DEFICIENCIES OF SRIPATUM UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

ABSTRACT
The purposes of this research were to (1) study English writing deficiency of undergraduate students of Sripatum University; (2) compare English writing deficiencies of male and female students of Sripatum University; and (3) compare English writing deficiencies of students in different faculties of Sripatum University.
This study employed the quantitative research methodology. The research population comprised Sripatum University students who took the English Writing Skills Course, and Technical English and Report Writing Course during the first semester of the 2006 academic year. The research sample consisted of five purposively selected groups with the total number of 222 students. Data were collected with the use of an English writing ability test. Data were analyzed with the use of basic statistics for quantitative study.
Research findings could be concluded as follows: 1. Results of data analysis with basic statistics on English writing deficiencies
of students showed that the deficiencies in the use of grammatical structure had the highest frequency, followed by deficiencies in the use of punctuation marks, capital letters, separation of words and sentences, and choice of words and sentences, respectively.
2. Results of comparison of mean scores in Part 2, Part 4, and overall mean scores between male and female students show significant difference at the .05 level.
3. Results of comparison of mean scores of students from different faculties showed significant difference for Part 1, and overall mean scores at the .05 level.
