Philippe d’Ornano, Sisley & Co-President of METI

After studying law, economics and political science in Paris, then serving as an infan-try officer, Philippe d’Ornano joined the family business in 1986.His first assignment was with the French market, where he became sales manager in 1988; he then took charge of the brand’s European development in 1990 and went on to create and develop 16 distribution subsidiaries. After his appointment as Executive Vice President in 1998, then President in 2001, he has pursued, alongside Sisley founders Hubert and Isabelle d’Ornano, chairman and vice chairman of Sisley, as well as his younger sister Christine, the development of Sisley in the world, notably by creating the brand’s Asian subsidiaries and opening regional offices in Hong Kong, Miami and Dubai. The business operates in more than 90 countries, has a network of 30 distribution subsidiaries and employs people from more than 100 different nationalities: he therefore travels extensively, spending around one third of his time outside France.Philippe d’Ornano takes a keen interest in broader social and business issues and the problems specific to family-owned enterprises: he was involved, with his father Hubert, in the creation of the French Association of Patrimonial Medium-sized Busi-nesses (ASMEP, now METI) founded by Yvon Gattaz. He is today co-President of this organisation.

Anne Le Lorier, Deputy Governor of the Banque de France

Anne Le Lorier has been appointed Deputy Governor of the Banque de France in November 2011.After graduating from the École Nationale d’Administration in 1977, she joined the Treasury, at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, where she spent most of her ca-reer. In 1981 she was appointed as France’s Alternate at the International Monetary Fund.In 1996, she became head of the Financing and Government Shareholding Depart-ment in the Treasury, then in 1998 head of the Monetary and Financial Affairs De-partment and, in this capacity, Censor of the Banque de France. In 2001, she joined the company Fimalac as a specially-appointed adviser to the Chairman and a mem-ber of the Executive Committee.In April 2002, she joined the EDF group, where she occupied various posts: Director, then Deputy Director General of Corporate Finance and Treasury Management of the EDF group and Director delegated to the Secretary General, with responsibility for the Group Risks Directorate and the Audit Directorate.She has been awarded the honours of Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite and Officier de la Légion d’Honneur.

Jesús Casado is the Secretary General of European Family Businesses since 2006. Luc Darbonne is a member of the 4th generation of Daregal family business. As the inventor of the frozen culinary herbs, he has made the business the worldwide lead-er in its field and successfully passed it on to the 5th generation. The company em-ploys over 500 people, in Europe with Daregal and in North America with Daregal Inc. and SupHerb Farms. Luc is the President of FBN France and an Ambassador of FBN International. He actively supports the French Family Business model and works on its continuity. Therefore, Luc is a Board Member of METI and EFB. Frédéric Coirier, CEO, Poujoulat

Frédéric Coirier is the chairman of the POUJOULAT Group (200M€ turnover and 1400 employees), the leading European manufacturer of chimney flues and stacks for dwellings, commercial and industrial applications. The POUJOULAT Group has developed new activities such as the production and distribution of high quality wood fuels (pellets and logs). In the last 10 years, the POUJOULAT Group turnover has tripled. Frédéric Coirier is also Vice-President of the French middle-size company association (METI) and also member of the board of the French renewable energy association (SER).

Jens Fiege, Member of the Board, Fiege Logistic Group

Jens began his professional career at Bertelsmann Ventures, working in Hamburg, Paris and Santa Barbara. He then moved on to Lufthansa Technik Logistik where he started to work in the field of logistics, working as a technical logistics provider in Hamburg. In 2004, he joined the family group becoming Managing Director of Fiege International. Since 2009 he is a Member of the Board Fiege Logistic Group. Fiege has been operating since 1873 and prides itself pioneering contract logistics. It employs 9000 people across 15 countries with 160 branches. Its turnover in 2014 was 1.4 billon EUR.

Dr. Leif Melin, Professor of Family Business Strategy, Jönköping International Business School

Leif Melin is Professor of Strategy and Organisation, and the Hamrin Professor of Family Business Strategy at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS).He was the Founding Director (2005-2012) of CeFEO, the Center for Family Enter-prise and Ownership at JIBS, an internationally leading centre for research and learning on family business and ownership issues, with about 30 researchers active in research projects and outreach activities. He has also served as Dean and Managing Director of JIBS and been a Visiting Pro-fessor at many institutions, lately at ESADE, Barcelona and Lancaster University Man-agement School. Presently he serves as a Director of the Board of the Family Firm Institute (FFI).His research focuses on strategizing in different contexts, the last 15 years with a focus on family owned businesses. He is especially interested in the practices, pro-cesses and arenas for active ownership. He is a founding member of the Global STEP research project (Successful Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Practices). He initi-ated and has since 2005 been a co-chair of the Annual EIASM Family Firm Research Conference.He has published in numerous international journals and book volumes, including the new “Sage Handbook of Family Business” (2014). Adrian Wooldridge, Management Editor, The Economist

Adrian Wooldridge is The Economist’s management editor and writes the Schum-peter column. He was previously based in Washington, DC, as the Washington bu-reau chief where he also wrote the Lexington column. Previously he has been The Economist’s West Coast correspondent, management correspondent and Britain correspondent. He is the co-author of “The Company: A Short History of a Revolutionary Idea”, “A Future Perfect: The Challenge and Hidden Promise of Globalisation”, “Witch Doc-tors”, a critical examination of management theory, and “The Right Nation”, a study of conservatism in America. Angelika Niebler, Member of the European Parliament

Angelika Niebler is a German politician and Member of the European Parliament for Bavaria (Christian Social Union) since 1999. She is a Member of the Bureau of the European People‘s Party. Since 2014 she is the Chairwoman of the CSU delegation in the EPP group and Co-Chairwoman of the German Delegation in the EPP group. She sits on the European Parliament‘s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, and its Committee on Women‘s Rights and Gender Equality. Florencio Lopez de Silanes, Professor of Finance, EDHEC Business School

Florencio Lopez de Silanes is Professor of Finance and Law and Director of Corporate Gover-nance Research Programme at the EDHEC Business School. His research interests and main publications fall in the areas of International Corporate Finance and Financial Markets, Legal Reform and Privatization. He has been an advisor on these topics to several governments, international institutions and corporations. Some of his research shows the relevance of law and institutions for the functioning of markets and their development. He has many publications in top finance and economics journals and has recently published two books on Investor Protection and the Benefits of Privatization in Latin America. Among other distinctions, he received Harvard’s Wells Prize for the Best Dissertation in Economics (1995), the Brattle Prize for distinguished paper in the Journal of Finance of the American Finance Association (1999), and the Jensen Prize for the best papers published in the Journal of Financial Economics in the Areas of Corporate Finance and Organizations (2000). He is one of the top three most cited researchers in the world in economics and business in the last 10 years. Before coming to France, he was a professor at the universities of Harvard, Yale, Amster-dam, and the Ecole Normale Superieur in Paris.

Anthony L. Gardner, U.S. Ambassador to the European Union

Anthony L. Gardner was sworn in as the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union on February 18, 2014. He presented his credentials to European Council President Van Rompuy and European Commission President Barroso on March 18.Prior to assuming his current position, Ambassador Gardner was Managing Director for six years at Palamon Capital Partners, a private equity firm based in London that focuses on providing growth capital to fast growing businesses in a wide variety of service sectors throughout Western Europe. In that capacity he managed financing, legal and tax structuring issues related to the firm’s acquisitions and divestitures.Previously, Ambassador Gardner served as an Executive Director in the leveraged finance departments of Bank of America and GE Capital and as a Director in the in-ternational acquisitions group of GE International, all based in London. He has also worked as a Senior Associate at international law firms in London, Paris, New York, and Brussels.

Sophie Pedder, The Economist

Sophie Pedder is The Economist Paris Bureau Chief, a post she has held since 2003. She is responsible for the paper’s political and economic coverage of France. She joined The Economist in 1990 in London, writing about British politics. After cover-ing the end of apartheid for the paper she was posted to Johannesburg in 1995 to open The Economist’s first bureau in southern Africa, returning to London in 1998 to become deputy Europe Editor and then global media editor. She is the author of ‘Le déni français’, published by JC Lattès (2012). She holds a first-class degree from Oxford University and an MA from the Universi-ty of Chicago, where she was a post-graduate Fulbright Scholar. Before joining The Economist she was a researcher for William Julius Wilson at the University of Chica-go’s Urban Family Life and Poverty Project.
