Operation Barbarossa ● On June 20, 1941, the surprise attack was launched on a broad front between 3 and

3:30 A.M

● Barbarossa mounted a force of nearly 3.6 million German and other Axis soldiers,

with some 3,600 tanks and more than 2,700 aircraft. It was the greatest invasion

force ever assembled in European military history.

● Operation Barbarossa was named after the medieval emperor Frederick

Barbarossa (Red Beard), who legend had it did not die, but was only sleeping in a

cave until he returned to lead Germany to power.

Operation Barbarossa

● The most significant aspect of Operation barbarossa was that it broke the pact

nonaggression pact between Germany and Russia

● Hitler was so confident that he would win that he didn’t even let his allies know

about his plans. He believed it would be an easy 3 month long battle in favor of

the Germans

Leningrad

● The siege of Leningrad, also known as the 900-Day Siege though it only lasted a

grueling 872 days, it resulted in the deaths of some one million of the city’s

civilians and Red Army defenders.

● On September 8, German forces besieged the city, but they were held at bay by

Leningrad’s fortifications and its 200,000 Red Army defenders.

Leningrad

● In early 1944, Soviet forces approached Leningrad, forcing German forces to

retreat southward from the city on January 27. The siege was over.

● The 872-day siege of Leningrad cost an estimated one million Soviet lives,

perhaps hundreds of thousands more.

● Germany was unable to siege Leningrad a major city for Russia's resistance.

● The city did not regain its prewar population of three million until the 1960s.

Battle of Stalingrad

● Nazi invasion of Stalingrad● July 1942- February 1943● Started with air raid and followed with siege● Continued through the winter of 1943● Germans run out of supplies and surrender in February ● The turning point of the Eastern Front● Embarrassment to Hitler and Germany● One of the bloodiest battles of WWII.

Details of Stalingrad

● City curves along the Volga river● Russians needed to cross the river to drive the Germans out● The Volga river froze in December ● Russians able to cross and attack the Germans● The Soviet Union took over 90,000 prisoners and only about 6,000 survived the

war.

Major Significance

Losing the battle against the Soviet Union was extremely embarrassing for Germany.

This was biggest turning point of WWII, giving the upper hand to the allies.
