Hello! If you’re reading this pack it probably means you’re

thinking about spending a year of your life with us, so we

thought we’d put this together to help make the decision

even easier! There is so much variety in Ykids through it’s

different projects and something always going on that you’ll

have plenty to do while you’re with us, but we’re also here to

help you settle into Liverpool (especially if you haven’t been

here before), which means supporting you with

accommodation, being a part of the right church. Hopefully

this pack should lend a hand too!

Our vision is for the transformation of Bootle

through its children and young people.

We have a passion to see lives changed and

young people given the best life chances and

opportunities. We believe regeneration and

better futures can come about by encouraging

young people to become resilient, confident

and happy; providing opportunities, training

and employment; raising aspirations and

dreams for the future; offering exciting and

creative projects, and creating a sense of local

pride and community. We believe in

encouraging young leadership and that

transformation in Bootle can come about

through its young people.

Ykids have 6 strands as to what we do;

Redi—The Redi (Reach, Empower, Develop,

Inspire) project works with a small relational

group work model, working with young people

aged 8 - 18 years. We currently have 10 Redi

groups.

Schools—We offer a variety of workshops,

lessons and assemblies to local schools both

primary and secondary, on subjects such as self

-esteem, choices and consequences, anger

management, bullying, fair trade, and hopes

and dreams.

Community—We love our community, and

there is nothing better than getting people to-

gether for fun activities! Community projects

are a great way for our young people to get

involved as volunteers too!

Page 4: - Anglican Diocese of Liverpool Intern... · you are thinking of one day running your own coffee shop outreach. Media and marketing – shadowing our Media manager and learning how

Enterprise—At Ykids we believe in enterprise both by encouraging young peo-

ple to become entrepreneurial and by generating jobs, income and a differ-

ence in our community by setting up social enterprises. We currently have two

cafes and Buzzinga Bees, where we have our own beehives and use the honey

to make cosmetic products and hive products.

Training—Training is an important part of what we do - from delivering bespoke

training in children’s work, youth work, and much more regionally, to investing in

our staff and young people.

Church—Ykids has a Christian ethos and therefore some of our work is with local

(and some not so local) churches. Our Christian work is distinct from our com-

munity work and has different aims:

To equip the church to be effective in its outreach to children and young

people

To envision churches to see what God can do through children’s work

To encourage faith in children and young people

Our aims is to equip the church to be effective in its

outreach to children and young people, to envision

churches to see what God can do through children's

work & to encourage faith in children and young

people.

We have exciting new projects coming up in the very

near future, which involves;

Library—we moving premises so we can have our

community centre! This means that we can de-

liver more youth work with 2 youth rooms, a

computer suite, and a kitchen which will be

used for community cooking and cooking pro-

jects, offices, and even a special office for in-

terns.

The Lodge—this is a building by the community

gardens where the plan is to turn this into an

eco-centre.

In the past year we have worked with over 5,000

children and young people over all our 6 strands. You

will find that in Ykids that our vision is big, it’s exciting,

it’s never dull, and that God is at the heart of it all.

Liverpool is steeped in culture, tradition

and beauty and continues to grow and

develop since becoming Capital of

Culture in 2008. There is plenty to see and

do, from the 2 huge Cathedrals that sit on

the same street in the city centre, to the

stunning Albert Dock filled with restau-

rants, cafes and shopping. If that wasn’t

enough for you, Merseyside is home to 2

of the biggest football clubs in England—

Everton & Liverpool, the Beatles, theatres,

museums, beaches, parks and much

more! There is plenty for you to see in your

downtime and we’d definitely advise you

getting out and enjoying what the city

has to offer. We’re sure you’d love it here

and be happy for you to come and visit

before deciding—just get in touch!

Ykids’ based in Bootle, which is ranked in the top 1% most deprived in the UK.

The statistics show that:

35% residents have no qualifications.

38% of children are living in low-income families, which is double the rate

seen nationally.

47.5% of residents aren’t in employment.

48% of households are lone parenthood.

(Sefton Council, 2015. And Church Urban Fund, 2015)

There are many problems because of poverty which include drugs, alcohol-

ism and crime but most steep from hopelessness and low self esteem. What

problems there are with gangs is very localised. There are no ‘no go ‘areas

and the communities are generally lovely, down to earth people who just

need someone to believe in them. Much of our work is in prevention and we

are seeing lives changed.

practical skills, workshops and seminars with

expert witnesses, theory of youth and children’s

work, policies and procedures, and of course

hands on experience. The training is very much

geared around you, what you already know and

what you want to know. It is not accredited but

will hugely enhance your CV.

The intern programme is lead by

our Children's and Youth Work

leads with input and support from

the CEO, Operations Manager

and other key staff. All are highly

experienced in delivering training

on a variety of topics. You will

have a line manager who will

help you manage your work load.

The cost is £2500 for an 11 month intern-

ship (mid Sept-mid Aug). This can be paid up

front or in termly instalments. And this in-

cludes—48 weeks accommodation with a

family – bed and board, £25 a week pocket

money (you get £1200 of your £2500 back),

Transport in the form of an annual bus pass

( Value £500+) ( or if you drive, we pay 45p

per mile for your work mileage), Uniform,

DBS check, Residentials, Training and person-

al development programme, All travel costs

to missions/ events etc..

This is a Christian internship – you will therefore need to be a professing Christian

wanting to explore more about what God has in store for your life. You will be

expected to get yourself to act as ambassadors of Christ and of Ykids. You will be

expected to treat the internship seriously as a great deal of time and money will be

invested in you. You will not be paying the real cost of your training, support or

accommodation but only a contribution. You will be expected to treat the

internship like a job – be punctual, respectful, and willing to learn. The more you

put in, the more you get out. While we have a process to hand over roles and

responsibilities during the year so that you gain experience, it takes time to get to

know you and you to get to know us. Hard work and the right attitude is always

rewarded and we will take you at your own pace, while encouraging you to grow

and develop to the best of your abilities. Being on an intern programme is an

intense and emotional experience. We ask that interns do not start new romantic

relationships with anyone related to Ykids while they are on their internship. These

sorts of relationships can be distracting and will disrupt teams and their dynamics

when they go wrong. If someone you meet from Ykids is set to be your life partner –

then you can wait a year.

3. Do I have to do all of the streams offered?

No, but obviously a few may need to take

your fancy in order for this to be a good

move for you! All of the 9 streams are there to

help and develop you, and we’d encourage

you to move out of your comfort zone at

times, but you won’t have to cover them all!

4. Can I come and visit first? Yes! We’d en-

courage you to come and meet the team,

have a look around the area and pray about

it. That will allow you to ask any questions and

see a little bit more of what Ykids does. If you

would like to visit us, then get in touch and we

can arrange a day for you to come to Liver-

pool.

If you have any other questions, please don’t

hesitate to ask them, you can call us on 0151

944 2111 or email us at

[email protected].

The chances are whenever you are making

a big decision in life that you will have lots of

questions. We thought we’d try and answer

some of the most common ones…

1. Where am I going to live? Great ques-

tion. You will be accommodated with a

local family and become part of that

family. You will be expected to help

around the house and respect family

rules. We have different families who of-

fer accommodation and we try to

match people accordingly. However if

it’s just not working for you or the family

we can move people.

2. Can I start the internship later in the

year? Yes, but we’d advise starting in

mid September to make the most of it!

Page 14: - Anglican Diocese of Liverpool Intern... · you are thinking of one day running your own coffee shop outreach. Media and marketing – shadowing our Media manager and learning how

Registered charity number 1141530 & Company Ltd

by guarantee number 7150747.

If this is sounding all very exciting and intriguing for you and you’re thinking I

want to take the next step it’s really simple. You will need to fill in the applica-

tion form at the end of the pack and send it to [email protected].

If you’re thinking this sounds great but I’ve got a few more questions I would

like to ask then ring us on 0151 9442111 and ask for either Emily or Claire who

will happily speak to you. Or better still come and visit us!

When you’ve submitted your application we will ask you to come to Ykids so

we can have an interview and we’ll show you the local area so you can get a

feel for it. Don’t worry this is not apprentice style interview with Lord Alan Sug-

ar, it’s just a couple of the Ykids staff wanting to get to know you better and a

chance for you to find out more about us.

We’ll then let you know a week after as to whether you’ve been offered a

place on the internship and we’ll start putting all the plans into action so you

can start mid September.
