Dear principals and teachers,We wish you a great success in the new school year of 2017/18. The Hong Kong Science Museum will continue to organise an array of educational programmes for teachers and students. We look forward to your participation.Development Unit, Hong Kong Science Museum

Wonder Materials – Graphene and Beyond

What is invisible to the human eye, thinner than a human hair and 200 times tougher than steel? Graphene. Graphene is a planar form of carbon with unique and exceptional properties: it is super lightweight, highly conductive and ultra-strong. It is the world’s first two-dimensional material isolated from graphite. The breakthrough was led by Prof. Andre Geim and Prof. Konstantin Novoselov at the University of Manchester in 2004. Their pioneering work led to their being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010. This wonder material could revolutionise electronics, medicine, energy and desalination, as well as a wide range of industries.

The exhibition takes you on a scientific journey of discovery through the past and present, and into the imagined future of graphene. It features over 100 objects and atomic models from scientists, collections of the Natural History Museum and London Science Museum, and interactive exhibits and video programmes. You can discover the curious method that led to the isolation of graphene for the first time, learn more about the unique properties of graphene and cutting edge research projects, and encounter both pioneering products incorporating graphene that are currently on the market and potential applications of graphene.

Young Scientists Study Tour 2017

Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum, the Faculty of Science of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Education Bureau, the Young Scientists Study Tour 2017 was conducted from 15 to 24 August. A group of 20 students and three teachers visited the Mount Wilson Observatory, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA) in California; Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona; and observed the total solar eclipse in St. Louis, Missouri in the USA. Through visits to various research facilities and participation in astronomical observations, students learned about the researches in earth sciences and astrophysics as well as their practical applications. The students also met with Caltech researchers who have shared their daily life experiences and anecdotes about their scientific research. Students of the study tour were selected from the SciPOP Science Presentation Contest 2017. If your students are looking for an enriching learning experience, don’t miss the SciPOP Science Presentation Contest 2018! Details will be released soon.
