“েশান িশকােগা ” ~ 2008 ~

Committee Members

I, on behalf of BAGC 2008 Executive Committee, wish all our BAGC family members a happy and productive 2008, and invite you to participate in various community activities and events. This year we have started couple of new committees similar to pilot programs; i) Gen-X committee to increase our youth participation and help them lead community activities, and ii) Bangla Education Committee to help involve our children in Bengali culture and education at very young age. Many enthusiastic volunteers have come forward to serve in these committees. The more the members participate, the more successful we are as a joint family. Saraswati Puja, the first event of the year, will be held on Feb 23rd. Our committee members with good help from lot of family members are working round the clock to make it a fun and interesting day for all. We are trying to have as many children participants as possible in five programs we have planned for Saraswati Puja. Following Saraswati Puja, we will celebrate Gen-X day sometime in the last week of April (TBD). Gen-X day will be combined with Children’s day, it will help give higher exposure to our budding talents. This year we are also planning a fund raiser to help the Banga Bhavan cause. I am working closely with Banga Bhavan volunteers to help move the cause forward. This is going to be our joint family’s permanent address. We will look for helping hands from our family members to make this fundraiser a success. BAGC Executive Committee and (TBD) Banga Bhavan Committee will always work in tandem to maintain our great family tradition and spirit. We are all volunteers, and the BAGC committees are just facilitators. We will “just do it” together!

- Namrata Saha

(13yrs)

“It’s hot and humid, as I stand in the shade of a tree marveling at the India Gate’s arch in Delhi, but that’s nothing new. That’s how it has been for the last one and a half months. The trip has been made bearable (at least for a typical Indian teenager growing up in America) by quick moments in air-conditioned stores, in hotel rooms, cars, and restaurants, but there has been no escaping the heat. This is summer in India, but what can we do, this is Desh, is it not?”

Nahergarh Fort (Sheesh Mahal)

Jaipur (City Palace)

In my two and a-half month trip to India, I witnessed great wonders in India from the mighty Taj Mahal to the majestic balconies of Fort Chittorgarh where queen Padmini committed jauhar which is a mass suicide made by Rajput women to avoid dishonor. I got to ride a camel and visit an authentic style Rajasthan village.

When we were at Kolkata, everyday would be to go shopping or go visit some relatives. When sightseeing, a normal day would be to wake up, eat breakfast at whatever hotel we were

staying at, and then get ready for a day of sightseeing, or a drive to our next destination where we stopped at various sightseeing spots along the way. We had an excellent driver who gave my family valuable advice on many of the decisions we made along the trip. For instance we found out the best time to go to see the Taj, was early in the morning where we beat the heat and the crowd.

There were many temples and tombs to visit along with other land marks like major forts and palaces. My favorite fort was the Amber Fort in Jaipur, because of the beautiful architecture and the snake charmers. I also liked Nahergarh Fort also in Jaipur, where I got to ride a camel. Another landmark that caught my eye was the huge tomb of Humayun in Delhi, the second Mughal Emperor after Baber. In another side trip I took, the Puri express from Howrah station to Puri in Orissa, which is an overnight train. There I visited the sea and the Konark temple where the Indian classical dance, Orissi, originated.

This was an amazing experience for me and I learned a lot about India. I learned a lot of the heritage of the country I come from. My trip to India provided valuable cultural and geographical information. It was a great experience that I think everyone should do a least once in their lifetime. The palaces and forts were so interesting to see and learn about. I had a wonderful time during this trip even though it was in the summertime.

India has many outstanding landmarks and areas of outstanding beauty. Ajanta Caves are located In Maharashtra, 100 kilometers from the city of Aurangabad. These 3rd-century caves are considered the finest masterpiece of Buddhist art and architecture. The caves are cut from the volcanic lava of the Deccan and are set in beautiful blooming surroundings. These historical manmade caves comprise of beautiful paintings on the walls and ceilings that depict the life of Buddha. The caves including unfinished are thirty in number of which five (9, 10, 19, 26 and 29) are "Chaitya-Grihas" and the rest are "Sangharamas" or Viharas (monasteries). Cave 26 by far is most magnificent and has some ornate sculptures. Ajanta Caves are well known for their fresco paintings that illustrate the life and incarnations of Buddha. Ajanta provides a unique platform to study the early phases of Buddhist sculpture, painting and architecture. - Editor’s Desk

I dusted the cobwebs in the attic They were watching me

I found a picture, it looked like my mother

They were watching me I opened the chest of old clothes

They were watching me I tried on of the beautiful dresses

They were watching me I looked in the mirror and found a

I turned around and the girl was a ghost, red eyed, vicious

I saw sorrow in her eyes, I asked what was wrong

Then I saw more…

Tip-toeing among tokens of gratitude, I rub your sparking golden hand taking away a bit more of the green patina praying for keeping my children safe from gales and icebergs of life.

INDICITO, THE CHILD OF PUNTA ARENAS — Bakul Banerjee

May your bronze statue stand tall braving the perpetual wind, watching over the memories of the dead around and beneath, amid blooming flowers in spring. May you grant wishes for ever, to people with sad hearts and teary eyes. May they paper the wall around you with marble plaques, giving thanks. Here, flags may last just for seconds. May you, the last Indian child, carried out of the depth of ocean, remind us, travelers from far away, that our tribes will also wither away bringing about a new tribe.

Note: During December 2007, we traveled to Patagonia, a land of fierce wind, lost tribes, and sparse land and seascapes.. The visit to the grave of the Indian child or Indicito left a lasting impression on me. The legend goes that local people brought up the last living Indian of the region from the bottom of the ocean and buried him in the cemetery of Punta Arenas. It is believed that he has magical power to fulfill wishes of desperate worshippers. © Photo and text, Bakul Banerjee, 2008 Indicito Memorial, Punta Arena

Restaurant Review—“ PENANG” 1720 W Algonquin Road (between Keystone Ct &

Kimball Hill Dr), Arlington Heights (847) 222-1888

- By Sonali Biswas We discovered Penang when we had food from there at a friend’s place. It was the finest Malaysian food we ever had here after Singapore. Malaysian Cuisine very skillfully blends the unique flavors of India, Thailand and Indonesia. It can be a great treat for the Indian as well as Western palate. When we visited the Restaurant, we really liked their warm and casual atmosphere. Penang features a very diverse menu with prices to fit anyone’s budget and a variety of dishes to suit anyone’s taste. For appetizers, I strongly recommend the “Roti Telur” which will remind you of our very own “Mughlai Paratha”. This is a paratha stuffed with onions, bell peppers and eggs served with a curry chicken dipping sauce. Another all time Indian favorite is the “Roti Canai” (noted as an award winning family recipe). This is also like plain paratha which is served with chicken and potato dipping sauce. Coming to entrée, we tried the “mango chicken” in which the chicken was stir fried with bell peppers and fresh mango in a tangy, sweet and spicy sauce and was served in mango skins. Another popular dish is the “Curry Lamb Shank” whereby the lamp shank is slowly cooked in rich coconut gravy with Chef’s secret spices. Some of the other not to be missed dishes on the menu are-“Penang Satay” which is also a Malaysian specialty, marinated buds of beef or chicken on skewers, charcoal grilled to order and served with a special peanut sauce on banana leaves. There is more to fusion at Penang than the combination of food styles from different areas of South East Asia. It’s all about combining diverse flavors within individual dishes which is very tricky for any cuisine. So next time you are heading out with friends or family for a meal, try some fusion cuisine, South East Asian style at Penang !!

have a depth of flavor that differs from normal fair. Their delicious Bagara Baingan which is Eggplant cooked with sesame seeds, peanut paste and yoghurt or Dingri Palak masala which is Mushrooms in spinach gravy are simply mouth-watering. There is a moderate selection of delicious Chicken and Lamb dishes on the menu to choose from. The Madras Mutton Khorma is mutton cooked with onions, fresh coconut, curry leaves & mustard is deliciously flavorful. Andhra Mutton Masala is not for people who shy away from spices. It is goat curry, laced with red chilli and other spices. Excellent if you can get past the heat of the chillies. The Hyderabadi Dum Biryani is 'Dum' style, meat and basmati rice combined to perfection and is served with Mirchi Ka Salan which is curried gravy. Hyderabadi Biryani is available for catering or on weekends only. Lastly, don't forget to try their Rasmalai which are soft and melt in your mouth and makes you want more.

Restaurant Review—“Cool Mirchi” 814 E-Nerge Road (at Plum Grove Rd), Roselle

"Mirchi"(chillies), the name reflects the self-proclaimed trendiness of this new Indian restaurant in Roselle, one of those little known places in a strip mall with just a few tables and no décor whatsoever. The food served here is mostly Hyderabadi Andhra style cuisine. As the name suggests the food is super spicy (hot !!!). Other than the standard appetizers, their Chicken 65 gets you started with a bang!! Pair it with drinks to sip on which can include chai, bright mango lassi and coconut water. Fresh Rotis and Nans are served straight from the oven. Their vegetarian selection has some dishes that
