Digital television

In several countries, including the UK, traditional analogue television is being replaced with digital television.

With analogue TV, the broadcaster sends the picture and sound through the air from their antenna to the antenna attached to your TV, using separate analogue waves.

Why is digital TV better than analogue TV?

Digital TV allows broadcasters to convert multiple analogue signals to binary code and send them through a single cable.

On-demand services like ITV Player, BBC iPlayer and 4oD have enabled viewers to watch TV programmes whenever they want.

Television online

Online television is becoming very popular.

Are there any disadvantages of online TV?

Content is either streamed in real-time, or downloaded to a PC to be watched later.

Digital recording

Some digital TVs include a digital video recorder (DVR).

This enables viewers to record programmes onto a hard disk (rather than onto a video cassette as in a VCR) to watch later.

Many DVRs allow users to pause and rewind live TV and record whole seasons of programmes automatically. Some systems can also suggest what you might like to watch, depending on your usual viewing habits.

Why might advertisers be worried about DVRs?

Life in 3D

The first 3D television went on sale in the UK in April 2010 and many films are now being shown in cinemas in 3D.

This creates an illusion of depth when the image is looked at through special glasses.

3D film is created by stereoscopy, where two images are captured by two offset cameras, recreating what our eyes do in the real world.

What do you think will be next in TV technology?
