New furniture fora summer to rememberIn the run-up to the 2011 season, we have made just as many changes internally at Brafab as we have in all the country’s gardens over the years. In the first place this is my first opportunity to wield the pen as new Chief Ex-ecutive, or Team Leader as we prefer to call it: in the Brafab family business, team spirit is all-important. Next we have acquired new owners in the form of Furninova, a family business just like Brafab and a good reinforce-ment for the team.

There’s lots going on, but rest assured, there will be no dramatic changes. Everything will feel familiar. But even

so, we still need to develop and manage the values built up during our 80 years in the business. We may sell won-derful furniture, but sitting back is not our style.

One of the new items I like to tell people about is our vi-sion: “We shall use garden furniture to create outdoor environments for people’s relaxation and enjoyment”. An ambition we work at realising, every day, all the year round. One important item of business news is our tar-geted international investment. We are now increasing our exports and adding new countries to the Brafab world map. For the first time the catalogue is issued in both Swedish and English. But we are not forgetting our domestic customers. We are proud of our service levels and happy with our corps of knowledgeable salesper-sons at our customers´ service. And now they will be

getting an extra hand. A whole new customer service department is taking shape and two persons will be working full time to deal with all your questions. So good service will become even better.

Eager to get on with forming your own impression of our range this year? - Let me first share with you some of the trends and my personal favourites. With their relaxing style and practical function, our lounge furniture in syn-thetic rattan maintains its top position on the outdoor furniture hotlist. One favourite is Wing, which stands out with its exquisite design and exclusive finish. And I have a weakness for an old friend like Olympia - a range which has just got better and better over the years and is now in principle as perfect as a piece of furniture can be. For those of you looking for a reasonable price I have a

valuable tip: keep an eye on Wisconsin! We approach the 2011 season with a really impressive range. There are new lines in all departments, not least in café furniture, which shows clear Italian influence and includes experiments in new materials such as transparent resin and compact lam-inate table tops.

Welcome to a new and inspiring season at Brafab. We continue to maintain a wide range and are able to offer garden furniture for all tastes and pockets.

Materials informationEvery season brings new materials and designs. Actually for us it is part of the charm of being in the furniture busi-ness. For your information we would like to give a short introduction to some of these materials here below. You will find more materials information at www.brafab.se.

Synthetic rattanWhat we call synthetic rattan is nothing less than imitation natural rattan in a material which can stand out of doors. At Brafab we mainly use polyethylene, a material which is 100% recyclable and has a very slow aging period. We have had the material in our range for several years, and it has grown from an untried newcomer to a dominating po-sition, popular among consumers and dealers alike. At the

same time development has gone from woven “plastic cord” to modern materials which are so realistic it is hard to see or feel the difference between synthetic and natural rattan. Just as in other materials, there are different grades of synthetic rattan. As in so many other areas you get what you pay for, and within synthetic rattan there are brands with a high quality profile. A good synthetic rattan must be through-dyed, resistant to sun bleaching, withstand high and low temperatures, sometimes with rapid fluctuations, and be dirt-repelling. Obviously, Brafab offers synthetic rattan from sev-eral different manufacturers and we are very pleased with their products. There are now also local producers of syn-thetic rattan, and in line with the rising demand several of our furniture suppliers have invested heavily in manufac-turing their own synthetic rattan for their furniture. Our ex-perience is that, in combination with our quality require-

SuperstoneMany of us agree that tables and table tops in stone are decorative and exclusive, and that trend seems here to stay, also in outdoor furniture. However it can be an advantage if the material used is suitable for outdoor use and not too heavy to move about. Brafab’s superstone table tops conceal beneath their surface either fibre, where the table top needs to be a bit thicker, or hardened glass for a rather thinner style. The base layer is then sprayed with a paste of stone flakes in a strong binder, and the surface is finished off with a clear matt varnish which also contains a UV shield. The result – a handsome table top which is practically indistinguishable from natural stone, with attractive texture, a natural feeling and the same exclu-sive and decorative expression.

Equally, better coordination of production allows us to shorten delivery times. Not only does synthetic rattan offer a wonderfully resistant material, there are now so many different styles, round and flat, thin and thick, ribbed and brushed, in solid colours or mottled, that it is impos-sible to see an end to development and innovation. Also, we are seeing new and exciting combinations of synthetic rattan and other resistant materials such as textilene and nonwood. We look forward to showing off our latest ideas in future Brafab catalogues, as an inspiration for beautiful and easily cared-for outdoor environments.

LaminateLaminate table tops are a new item in our range this year. Our laminate consists of multiple layers of paper pressed into a panel under extremely high pressure. The material comes from coniferous and deciduous trees in renewable forests. It can be recycled and has a high energy content. It contains no heavy metals, dioxins or PVC. Laminate is hardwearing and has a long service life. For daily cleaning, first wipe down the surface with a cloth sprinkled with washing-up liquid or universal cleaner. For stubborn stains, remove the dirt by adding household spirit or glass cleaner. Then dry off with a dry cloth. Please note that hot pans and dishes cannot be placed directly on a laminate table top, and here an under-lay must be used.

Pine FurnitureDo you prefer your belongings locally manufactured rather than shipped in over long distances? Then pine furniture is something for you. Brafab’s pine furniture is made from Norrland Pine from well-managed forests with sustainable systems certified by FSC or PEFC. Our activities continue to meet our high stand-ards, meaning that not only raw materials but also manu-facture is certified, with the aim of ensuring that every sin-gle piece of furniture leaving our factory is FSC marked. The only cost to your good environmental conscience is that you will need to treat your furniture now and then, say with our high-quality China Wood Oil. Right at the manu-facturing stage our brown wood furniture is treated three times with Acrylic paint. Our white furniture is threated with a PU-base ant two coatings of acrylic paint. All surface

treatment is performed with products ensuring that the furniture is protected from UV radiation and able to with-stand wind and weather. Our range also includes attrac-tive furniture and sets in pressure-impregnated timber with the NWPC AB classification. Follow the care instructions included with the furniture and they will be yours to enjoy for many years to come – and with a good environmental conscience.

The laminate top is available in both grey and white. The larger tops to be combined with a Wilson frame and the smaller ones with one of our café table frames.

NATURALISTIC ART FOR ALL WEATHERS We furnish the summer, and more and more frequently

we do so with synthetic rattan. Perhaps it’s not so

strange: the trend is for the home to take on ever more

importance, and since synthetic rattan outdoor furni-

ture resembles indoor furniture so strongly, it is easy to

create a warm and inviting milieu, even outside the four

walls of the house. A place where you can feel at home

during the warm summer months.

Synthetic rattan has undergone enormous deve-

lopment in recent years and more and more resembles

natural rattan. Our synthetic rattan furniture is made in

a similar fashion to furniture in natural rattan and is the

outcome of hard-won and demanding craftsmanship.

The furniture is woven by hand round a stable weather-

resistant frame, and it often takes a whole day to weave

one chair. Since we use high quality materials from inside

to out, we are able to offer synthetic rattan furniture

which is really able to stay the pace outdoors. This

year we are introducing lighter colours and softer sha-

pes, together with coarser fibres to give the furniture a

more robust expression.

times it lasts from spring to autumn, other times it just

puts in the occasional guest appearance. What we do

know is that a meal with a warm sea breeze as guest

of honour is the height of all meals. So when summer

arrives for you, make sure you are ready for a really

special dinner party. Make sure your outdoor furniture is

in teak.

Teak is so robust it can stand outside year after

year, and so strong that only the smallest dimensions are

needed but still provide a chair which bears the weight

of a full-grown adult. But for teak to demonstrate its

excellent characteristics, it is necessary to do the right

thing from the start. A teak tree is ring-barked and then

left to dry on the root for two years before being felled.

Next the sawn teak planks require long seasoning to

dry to the correct moisture content. We also use

machine manufacturing, which for teak furniture gives

better quality than handy craft. This is because teak

requires extremely high precision tools.

In view of our efforts to protect the environment, we use a leaf as the classification symbol. Brafab’s entire teak range derives from planted teak trees.

Class 1 teak with the finest selected teak wood. The teak logs have a high age and contain a high proportion of oil, giving the wood a long life. The finish is top-class and all details are in high-quality materials. Products we are proud of - products which last.

This is Brafab’s standard teak classification. The difference lies in the tree’s age and structure. High finish on this machine-made furniture.

This classification shows that the product is made from BC teak with a sand-blasted surface.

years off, every day was a play-day, and summer with its

green lawns seemed endless. One happy time followed

another, and sitting on a swing with your best friends,

drinking juice and eating buns was just one of life’s

many highlights. And why should things be any

different now? Furnish your outdoor space with Swedish

pine furniture, invite your friends around and relive your

childhood.

Pine furniture has always had a special place in our

hearts. Maybe it’s got something to do with the fact that

it fits in so well with the traditional Nordic environment.

But how good is pine really, when used as an outdoor

material? Well, it’s excellent, we claim, as long as you

treat the wood in the right way so that it can withstand

the wind and weather. We use exclusively pine from the

Northern part of Sweden, which is treated no fewer than

four times. We start by dipping it in wood oil, then we

stain it and finally give it two layer of lacquer. The result

is excellent durability and colour-fastness.

The pavilion provides protection from rain, sun and wind, and even from insects if you fit side walls or a mosquito net! Pavilions are available in sizes 3.5 x 3.5 m and 3 x 4 m. A robust pine framework supports the rain-resistant canopy, which is available in colours grey, beige and black. The wood details are stained in brown, black or white. Trellises are available as an optional extra and give the pavilion a snug feeling. See next page for article number.

If you want furniture that is completely maintenance

free, resin is the answer. What is more, resin furniture is

often light, making it easy to move around. The big

difference between good and bad resin furniture, apart

from comfort, lies in the quality of the resin itself. A good

resin lasts and is resistant to fading. Our Italian suppliers

Nardi, for example, use an outstanding quality of resin in

their products. After ten years out in the sun they are as

shiny as ever and the colour has not faded in the

long ago that summer is far too fine a thing to be con-

fined to just June, July and August. That’s why we offer

furniture in natural rattan, which in the setting of an en-

closed patio allows you to enjoy summer all year round.

Making furniture from rattan is a true feat of

craftsmanship. The long rattan rods are woven round a

wooden frame. The result is living and natural furniture

which gives a warm feeling to your patio or living room.

Trunks from the rattan palm Calamus can grow up to

150 m, and thanks to their extreme flexibility are fre-

quently used in baskets and furniture. Before weaving,

the annual tree rings are ground away and the rattan is

coloured and lacquered. Natural rattan must not get

wet, so it is best suited an enclosed patio.

three simple steps for teak and hardwood maintenanceFor best results and to extend the lifetime of teak or hardwood garden furniture it is important to maintain these correctly. Depends on the age of the furniture. Instructions:

new timber: Rub down with sandpaper of grain 80-120. Protect according to step 3.

newer furniture in good condition: Clean according to step 2 below. Protect thereafter according to step 3.

older furniture that has become weathered and grey: Pretreat according to step 1 below. Clean thereafter according to step 2 and protect using a Teak Sealer, Teak Oil or Chinese Wood Oil according to step 3. If you would like to keep the grey patina, omit step 1, clean according to step 2 and apply a Teak Protector during step 3.
