Reagan’s main goal was to contain communism in the Soviet Union
If the communism wasn’t contained, the USSR would influence other countries to fall under communism
Also, the USSR would grow much larger
Regan and the Soviet Union
When Regan took office he was completely against communism.
He gave nuclear weapons to other free democracies nuclear weapons so they could defend themselves if the Soviet Union were to attack.
Regan and Soviet Union 2nd term
On the other hand, in Regan’s second term in office he was kinder to the Soviet Union.
The made an advance in his military polices, so that the Soviets could not match them.
As a result, the Soviet Union surrendered and signed the Intermediate Range Nuclear Force Treaty, which took medium range nuclear weapons out of Europe.

Iran-Contra Affair
Major political scandal that happened in 1986 Basically, the Reagan Administration secretly
sold arms to Iran Why? Because the arms sales would release
the hostages held in Iran. Also, it would collect money so the US could pay for the Contra’s.
What were the Contras? A private army created by the CIA, their job was to be located in Nicaragua and take out Somoza (dictator of Nicaragua)
Iran-Contra Affair
During their mission however, they violated human rights and word spread to Congress
When Congress was informed, they decided to cut funds for the Contra’s
Reagan’s Administration was unhappy to hear that the funds were cut because they favored the Contra’s attempts to contain communism
With out funds from the US, the Contra’s could no longer carry out its mission
Iran Contra Affair
So what did the Reagan Administration do?
Since they had to find a new way to fund the Contras, the Reagan Administration funded it by use of third-world parties & private sources.
The National Security Council was in charge of this and they had their own planes, ships, pilots, & secret Swiss bank accounts to help fund
Iran Contra Affair
Meanwhile, Congress had no idea about the secret funding
Once it was brought to attention, Reagan called for an investigation
He was clear from having anything to do with the secret funding
Although he had nothing to do with it, he was still criticized about loose management in the government
This also caused citizens to loose even more faith in the US government
Reaganomics
• Reagan’s economic theory • Used to reduce govt. spending• Reduce income tax & capital gains
tax• Control Money Supply
