Founded as watchmakers in London in 1851, Smiths entered the motor instrument trade early on. The firm became S. Smith& Sons (Motor Accessories) Ltd in 1914, by which time it had made more than 50,000 speedometers and was employing400 workers at its Cricklewood, London factory. By 1927 Smiths had become a household name in the motor accessory fieldand at the 1965 Earls Court Motor Show had six different stands to display its products: Radiomobile radios, British Jaegar instruments, Lodge plugs, KLG plugs, Smiths heaters and, of course, Smiths gauges. Smiths had become the main sourceof gauges for British cars in the classic period but sadly their fortunes declined in parallel with the decline of automotive manufacturing in the United Kingdom. But all is not lost because manufacture continues in a small way in the United Kingdomfrom which we are able to offer a selection of Smiths gauges.
