The wind farm would be located to the east of Newton Aycliffe, south of Ferryhill and Chilton and north of Darlington. The site, called ‘The Isles’ would feature between 25 and 45 turbines, with a generating capacity of between 50MW and 115MW, enough to power up to 53,000 homes per year. Additionally a community benefit fund would support local projects throughout the windfarm’s lifetime, and would be worth up to £460,000 to local residents. MP for Sedgefield Phil Wilson is opposing the scheme, citing that “County Durham has a proud record on renewable energy. 22% of our energy needs in the county are from renewable sources. A ‘Real’ treat for Ferryhill Station children

Class three pupils from Ferryhill Station Primary School were delighted when Gary Philipson and Lisa Shaw, presenters of The Real Radio’s Breakfast Show, visited the school on Friday 8th July to promote the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle.

The event involved children in years four, five and six competing in team-building activities and games, culminating in a Hoopla Finale, in which the children competed to see who could spin a hoola hoop on their body for the longest time, which revealed a competitive

The event showed the children just how easy it can be to exercise daily and spend time with their friends and families outdoors, especially as the summer holidays are just around the corner. Paul Daglish, the school’s Deputy Headteacher, said Year Six pupils had achieved outstanding end of year SATS results and this event was a perfect end of year celebration. Dear Editor

I am trying to contact my grandfather's sister Enid Ward, who I believe lives in Chilton.

I am contacting her in relation to sharing some family history, in particular of her father (my great-grandfather) Joshua, and her grandfather (my great-great-grandfa-ther) Joseph.

If Enid is interested, I am contactable at my grandfather's address in Kelvin Street, Ferryhill or my mobile 07504 614213. If Enid could get in touch, I would be extremely grateful. Regards.

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,

I am writing this email after being appalled by what I witnessed this evening.

I took my two children (aged 6 and 8) to my local park (beside Broom school) so they could play on the new swing and football snookertarget game.

As we entered the park a crowd of teenagers surrounded a fight, as we got closer I could see two smaller boys (approx 6 - 7 years-old) being encouraged by the teenagers to fight.

I intervened and sent the two smaller boys home, both of which were crying and visibly upset by what they were being made to do.

The remaining gang then continued to be verbally aggressive towards me before leaving the park.

During a heated arguement (I admit to being furious) I told the teenagers they were stupid as the park is monitored by cameras - their response - “Not here they aren’t”, (beforepointing out the areas the cameras cover) “They can’t see us here.”

I am disgusted that this kind of incident is happening and have reported it to the police, who are going to try and increase beats in that area, but personally can I ask a local firm to sponsor extra cctv cameras for the park so that anyone using it can do so safely?

Seems such a waste when Ferryhill Town Council are making huge efforts to make the most of such areas that the minority can get away with such disgraceful actions knowing they won’t be caught!?

Yours, a concerned parent.Name and address supplied.

During her year in office as Mayor of Chilton, Councillor Margaret Walton chose to support sufferers of laryngeal dystonia.Margaret herself has been affected by this condition for eight years and presented a cheque for

£2,000 to ENT consultant, Maurice Hawthorne, when she came for her regular three-monthly outpatient appointment at James Cook on Wednesday 13th July. Margaret, shown above left with Mr Hawthorne and SLT director Jayne

Deakin, finished her term of office in May 2011. She said that the donation was to highlight the condition and to show her “appreciation for the fantastic work Mr Haw-thorne’s team and the ENT department were doing in this field”.

Landlords fined over £17,000Durham County Council has obtained another successful landlord prosecution, the fourth in the space of four weeks.William and Claire McBride, both based in Northern Ireland, faced eight charges for not obtaining the ap-propriate licences for four properties in Raby Terrace and Dene Terrace in Chilton. The prosecution was heard at Darlington Magistrates’ Court on 14th July. The defendants, not in attendance, pleaded guilty to the charges. Each defendant was fined £8,000, each was ordered to pay costs of £590 and each was ordered to pay the £15 victim surcharge. In total they were ordered to pay £17,210 in fines, costs and victim surcharges. In imposing a significant

financial penalty, mag-istrates acknowledged the defendants blatant disregard for the legislation and noted that they had continued to rent out the properties and had even granted new tenancies after charges had been laid at court. In mitigation Mr McBride stated he had been in poor health since January 2009 and Mrs McBride stated she was involved in management of properties in name only.In February 2008 Dean Bank became a designated ‘Selective Licensing’ area in an effort by the council to ensure all properties are well-managed, to help raise standards and reduce anti-social behaviour.Licences are only granted to landlords who can dem-onstrate good management

arrangements and pass a 'fit and proper' person test.Clive Robson, cabinet member for housing said,“The Landlord Initiatives Team works with landlords to assist them to operate in a professional way. “The Selective Licencing Designation was designed to tackle absent landlords, such as in this case, who do not put effective management procedures in place and ensure compliance with legisla-tion.“Durham County Council is committed to taking action against landlords who do not take their responsi-bilities seriously and I hope that this case, alongside the other successful ones we have taken to court, will demonstrate to others that we mean business."

Executive Officer’s spending mistakeJamie Corrigan, Executive Officer for Ferryhill Town Council came forward recently to explain how he had mistakenly bought some personal items on his company credit card. The company card is identical to his personal card, and Mr Corrigan says he simply didn’t notice he was using the wrong card to pay for goods. He identified the items on his

bill and immediately came forward and paid off the balance for his personal purchases.A petition has been lodged to the Town Council citing that “The Executive Officer of Ferryhill Town Council should be dismissed from office because he used the Town Council’s debit card on, at least, 9 occasions to purchase goods and

services for himself.” Mr A. Holmes of Rutherford Terrace, Ferryhill, has requested a meeting to be held in the Ferryhill Dean Bank Institute on Friday 29th July from 7pm. Should enough people present at the meeting support the call for a parish poll, then the proposition would then be placed before the electorate of Ferryhill for their decision.

160 YEARS IN FERRYHILL

Tuesday 12th July saw yet another fantastic evening of singing and dancing from the talented cast at Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College. This year’s summer production was “Music Through Decades” and students performed an array of songs and dances from the 1940s right through to current chart hits. The show kicked off with a full cast number to The Black Eyed Peas “I Gotta Feeling” before shooting back in Time to 1942 and The Andrew Sisters’ “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, which was brilliantly sung by girls from years 7, 9 and 10.

Another startling show success for college cast!

The audience then flew through the 50s, 60s 70s 80s and 90s with songs and dances from students from all year groups, paying tribute to artists such as Elvis, Bon Jovi, Take That, The Spice Girls, Tina Turner and The Beatles. The staff even joined in the fun, donning costumes and wigs and belting out a song or two as well. The show was organised by Mr Brown and Miss McCavanagh and surpris-ingly was put together in just over 3 weeks. “We didn’t think there was going to be a show at all this year due to various circumstances” says Miss McCavanagh, “but we didn’t want a whole year

to pass by with no perfor-mances as we have such a talented cast and crew in college.”A second performance was given at Ferryhill Methodist church on Wednesday 13th July after a representative of the church, who attends all of the school produc-tions, invited the cast along to perform for the congregation. The audience was full of praise for the cast and crew and the chapel very kindly donated half of the money raised on the evening, which meant the show fund gets a donation of £200. They have also been invited the cast to return for performances at Christmas.

Mainsforth CricketA busy midweek for Mainsforth Cricket Club saw the juniors successful in the league and the senior first XI progress in two cup competitions. The U18s were at home to Ushaw Moor on Tuesday. Batting first, they scored 117/6 with G. Donaldson top scoring with 38. Ushaw Moor could only manage 105/6 in reply with the U18s finishing the season on a high.On Wednesday the firsts were at home to Brandon in the Matthew Oswald Cup. Mainsforth batted first and scored 117/8 with B. Teesdale making 31. Brandon fell short in reply making 63/9, in part due to a superb bowling perfor-mance from G. Purcell who took 3/1.

No respite though and the firsts were back in action the following day, taking on Shildon at home on Thursday in the Carlsberg Cup. Again Mainsforth batted first and put on 109/7 with M. Cowell con-tributing a solid 34. Shildon fell just short with a valiant 104/9 with C. McGregor making an excellent 68 for the visitors. Once again the pinpoint bowling of G. Purcell was a factor, this time claiming 5/22.On Sunday 24th July the club is holding the 1st Round of the Annual Novices Competition. “Come along to the ground and support your friends” said a club spokesman. “It is sure to be a great atmosphere and the bar will be open!” he added.

Saints kick-off pre-season in styleFerryhill Saints have started their preseason campaign on the front foot, winning both of their recently friendly warm-up games.Having gone 2-0 down in the first five minutes against Ferryhill Surtees, the Saints rallied and recovered in impressive style to win the game 6-2. Goals from Shain Todd, Nicky Pattison, Richy Gardiner, David Tait and a wonder strike from Dan Mitton from just inside his own half helped seal the win for Saints. In a tough game against Darlington WMC this time Saints opened the scoring, battling hard and scoring from a header after great

flank work by Shain Todd, and continued to dominate the first half. Darlington came back into it after the restart though and equalised after 70 minutes. The two sides then exchanged chances but Saints prevailed in the last minute after a route one flick on from a goal kick was nicely tucked away by Shain Todd for the Saints to win 2-1.Their preseason routine continues on Sunday at home to Chilton WMC. Kick off is at 10.30am at the Mainsforth ground. “Everyone is welcome to attend, come along to cheer on the lads!” said a spokesman.
