9-17 March 2019
The gardens of Cannero Riviera will once again opentheir gates into the realm of biodiversity, giving visi-tors the opportunity to admire the citrus fruits thathave made their home here in the northernmostreaches of Italy. The 2019 edition will feature the orange, with theinvaluable collaboration of Professor GiuseppeBarbera of the University of Palermo. Talks and discussions will cover the extraordinarypresence in loco of oranges with pigmented pulp, aswell as moving beyond regional boundaries to reflecton the theme of “oranges-territory-legality”, with thecontribution of growers and students from the townof Lentini, located on the slopes of Mt. Etna. This year will also mark the conclusion of the three-yearcycle of “OrangeArancio”, the landscape installation cre-ated by volunteer workshops and dedicated to the cit-rus fruit considered the symbol of perfection. The Rio Cannero stream will also be exploredthrough a photographic and sound installation ded-icated to the “Dream of the Four Melarance”.And this year’s art exhibit will present SimonettaOcchipinti‘s watercolor portraits of citrus fruits, GoldMedal winner of the 2016 London Botanical Art Show.

Citrus Fruit on ShowIn Wonderland
“So she sat on, with closed eyes, and half believed herself inWonderland, though [Alice] knew she had but to open them again,
and all would change to dull reality” Lewis Carroll
Surprised by the unexpected beauty of Cannero and itsgardens, visitors of past editions have often described itas a “Wonderland”, which became the inspiration for theexhibition in the Sala Pietro Carmine. The dreamlike, surreal atmosphere of Lewis Carroll's fairytale has been recreated as the background setting for thedisplay of the incredible variety of these winter fruits … astroll amid colors, scents and brushstrokes of fantasy, in agarden where nonsensical decorations, Victorian fancyand sensory suggestions all merge together sans rhymeor reason.Designed to pleasantly surprise the visitor, as well asexplore new ways of presentation, yet with the spotlightalways on the stars of the event: the great variety of cit-rus fruit found in Cannero’s incredible gardens.
Plants, books and publications, sweets and perfume available

Once again the colourfulorbs will be arranged in a bright sheltered corner in aninterpretation of the idea of a “garden town”. A newand surprising vision of the concept of awareness andsafeguarding of the territory, developed through theintroduction of different materials. The installation isthe result of the work of a group of volunteers (mem-bers of the community and students) coordinated andled by the landscape designer Michela Pasquali andarchitect Federica Cornalba, in collaboration with theAssociazione Culturale Gabaré.

According to FAO criteria, the sweet orange is the fourthmost cultivated fruit in the world, and according toBruno Munari, the orange is the “perfect fruit”.A panel of authoritative voices, conducted by the natural-ist journalist Mimma Pallavicini, of Gardenia magazine, will present a series of fascinating and varied points ofview regarding this sun-drenched citrus fruit that has alsobrightened the gardens of Cannero Riviera for centuries.
