PASTOR`S LETTER
THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD, JANUARY 7, 2018
“Every nation on earth will adore you, o Lord”, this refrain of the
Psalm, written a long time before the nativity of Christ, reminds us
about the meaning of this holiday: in the fact of the birth of Jesus, the
Son of God, it starts to shine the light for the world (the theme of the
first reading today in a form of the prophecy from 7th century before
Christ). This is the true epiphany of God’s plans, which speaks that
God wants to save every human being, that all the nations could adore
Him in the best way. It will be possible when the nations recognize the
forthcoming of Messiah through the birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah
who –as the only one– is able to bring peace on the earth. Jesus
Christ’s coming is a preparation of His saving mission on the cross through which He will redeem the world, and thus
He will enable it to adore the Lord properly. The Church, in the fact of Gods nativity proclaims exactly to all the
nations this truth about salvation. St. Paul reminds us speaking about the mystery revealed to him by God: “It was not
made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles by the Spirit: that the
gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus the gospel”. St. Paul
tells us that the word of God proclaimed to all the listeners make them heirs of the salvation in Jesus Christ no matter
of their origin, race, and social status. But they have to receive this message. The first who believed were Jewish
people, apostles, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, and the others. Later, thanks to the Jewish diaspora (people living within
the Roman Empire) the gospel was embraced by the whole Mediterranean, so called Hellenistic world (the people
speaking in Greek), and the others regions of the world. Thanks to the work of the previous generations of Christians
we know today the gospel as well and we treat it as the good news of salvation for us in Christ. To us now lay the
obligation to pass on it to the next generation: to our children, grandchildren, acquaintances, to the people from
remote countries, where Christ is still not known.

RESPONDING TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY On Saturday and Sunday, January 20 and 21, Fr. Charles W. Dahm, O.P, Director of Domestic Violence Outreach for the Archdiocese of Chicago, will preach at all the Masses at St. William. Although largely unseen, domestic violence is rampant in the United States, including in our community. Calls about domestic violence are the most frequent received by local police in our community. On Monday, January 22, Fr. Dahm will speak at 7:00 pm with those parishioners interested in learning more about domestic violence and/or helping our parish respond to the needs of victims in our community as sensitively and compassionately as we can.
GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE "Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." What a wonderful example the Magi give us in their visit to the infant Jesus. First of all, they demonstrate profound faith in God's word, spoken through the prophet Micah: "And you, Bethlehem ... from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel" (cf. 5:2). Embarking on a long and difficult journey, they trust that they will find this newborn king of the Jews in Bethlehem as the prophecy announced. On their arrival at the home of the Holy Family, the Magi also give us an example of profound humility. These important men, to whom kings look for guidance and advice, do not hesitate to bow down, to "prostrate themselves" and give homage to a tiny babe. Putting their own position out of their minds, they reverently worship the infant Lord even as he sits on the lap of his mother. The generosity of these three "kings" is also evident as they open their treasure boxes and give to the poor child the richest of gifts. Traditionally, we understand the gold to symbolize the earthly kingship of Christ, the frankincense to represent his divinity, and the myrrh to stand as a symbol of the anointing he will receive upon his death. Finally, the wisdom of these men is evident in their decision to return to their country "by another way." Understanding the threat that King Herod posed to Jesus, they followed a plan that would help keep the divine child safe even though it meant inconvenience to themselves. Faith, humility, generosity, and wisdom. These gifts are the real legacy of the Three Kings. Today, let us ask God for the blessing of having these gifts in our lives.

Everyday Stewardship
My mother-in-law was the best gift-giver I ever knew. One could say
my parents spoiled me growing up, but there was something about her
gifts to me that made me feel overwhelmed. I guess it was that after
several years I still was surprised that she would think enough of me to
get me something no one else would. She was able to make me feel
special every time. Of course, I believe she honored me in this way
because I accepted her greatest gift to me, her daughter.Sadly, my
mother-in-law did not live long in this world. She passed away over a
decade ago due to an aggressive cancer. Some of her material gifts to
me remain, while others are long gone. But the memories and the
effect of those gifts remain because it was never all about the gifts
themselves. It was about relationship. It was about her and me. It was
about love. What we offer Jesus is never about the gift itself. It is about
the motivation behind the action and the effect that action has on the
body of Christ. Many of the gifts we give today to God and his people
will fade away like the mist of the early morning, but the effects of
those actions will last forever. It is about relationship. It is about God
and us. It is about love.

Prayer for Epiphany
Dear Jesus,
though a newborn, the wise men knew your greatness.
On a hint from the heavens,
they traveled far from their places of comfort
so that they could honor you.
From their belief in your divinity,
they gave amazing gifts, offerings that symbolized
your life, power, and even your death.
And because of a dream in the night,
they altered their well-laid plans to return home
in order to protect you.
May we be so willing to honor, sacrifice, and obey,
all for love of you,
as we meditate on the meaning of this day.
Amen

NEW CATHOLIC SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR 2018/19 SCHOOL YEAR
Through the “Invest in Kids Act,” the state of Illinois has created a new way to fund scholarships for children from low-income households who want to attend private schools. This program provides an opportunity for more students to receive a quality Catholic education. The tax credit scholarships offered through this program could cover up to 100 percent of tuition and fees for eligible, low-income students. Not all families will be eligible for the new scholarships, but we want to make sure all families are aware of the program.Program details are still being finalized, but you can find information on the scholarships, the application process and the “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQ) on the Archdiocese of Chicago’s website, archchicago.org/tcs. If you have any questions about tax credit scholarships, please contact the Archdiocese at [email protected] or 312.534.5321.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: Besides the Wise Men, what is significant about the Epiphany? Answer: Epiphany means "manifestation," or public display. The feast is usually celebrated January 6. In the US, it is celebrated on the Sunday nearest to January 6. It originates from a story unique to Matthew (2:1-12). Magi from the East come to offer homage to the newborn King, presenting him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This part of Matthew's infancy narrative differs from Luke's account of the birth of Jesus. In Luke there are no Magi, star, nor gifts. Luke has Jesus being born in a stable after Mary and Joseph's long travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Matthew seems to have the family living in a house in Bethlehem, where the Magi find them. Why these differences? They stem from the needs and concerns of the audience the authors were addressing, as well as the theological stance of each author. Knowing the original intention helps get at the correct interpretation of the text. Since Matthew was writing primarily to a Jewish community, his concern was to show that Jesus did not come just for Jews, but for Gentiles as well. From his very birth, Jesus not only manifests himself to Jews, but also to Gentiles, who are prominently included in the manifestation, symbolized by the Magi and their journey. This is the most significant aspect of the feast of Epiphany. How do you manifest Jesus to all with whom you come into contact?
