Objective holders for Cerna microscopes consist of two pieces: a nosepiece and a mounting arm. We currently offer options that enable you to attach eitherone or two objectives simultaneously. To make it easier to get started with your imaging setup, this page also contains a selection of widefield imagingobjectives commonly used with Cerna microscopes, although our microscopes are compatible with objectives from all major manufacturers.

Objective Holders: Nosepieces and Mounting Arms
Our nosepieces let you simultaneously install either one or two objectives into theCerna microscope. The two-objective option (Item # MBP70100) uses a slider toeasily swap between objectives, as shown in the video to the right, allowing you to use a low-magnification objective to find a region of interest and a high-magnification objective to image.
These nosepieces contain either M25 x 0.75 or M32 x 0.75 threads. For compatibility with a greater range of objectives, we manufacture an extensive selection ofthread adapters that convert between M25 x 0.75 threads, M32 x 0.75 threads, RMS (0.800"-36) threads, or virtually any other standard. The M25 x 0.75 and M32x 0.75 thread standards are most commonly used by Nikon objectives, while RMS threads are most commonly used by Olympus objectives.
Required AccessoriesThe nosepiece is the device that holds the objective, while the mounting arm is the component that connects the nosepiece to the Cerna microscope body. Sinceeach component is sold separately, please refer to the Required Accessories rows in the tables below to ensure you order everything you need.
Compatibility with DIC ImagingIf you would like to perform DIC imaging, you should choose the MBP71100 or MBP70100 nosepiece. The CSA1100 nosepiece is not compatible with DIC imaging.
InstallationThe CSA1100 nosepiece is attached directly to the objective focusing module using six M4 counterbores. To install the MBP71100 or MBP70100 nosepiece, firstslide the dovetail on the top of the nosepiece into the mating dovetail on the CSA1200 mounting arm (sold separately), then lock the dovetails together using theincluded M4 setscrew (2 mm hex). The resulting assembly can be attached to the objective focusing module using the six M4 counterbores on the mounting arm.See the Drawings tab for details.

If you would like to use trans-illumination to study slices, cell cultures, or other thin in vitro samples, note that the numerical aperture (NA) of yourcondenser should be larger than your objective NA, or the outer edge of the field of view will be noticeably dimmer than the center. This issue generallyonly arises with high-magnification objectives (40X or greater).
