OUR RAIN OR SHINE SCHOLARSHIP BBQ --The 2007 Scholarship BBQ, in spite of the weather, was a great night! Bar Anticipation, our event host, provided us with ample cover from the rain in a new spacious “beach” location this year. All enjoyed great BBQ food, summer drinks, and the best staff of bartenders and servers! Thank you to Reggie, Lauren, John, Gianna and all the staff for their hard work!

Dave Tucker entertained us with his alternative / freestyle / electroacoustic mix of music which had many heads bopping and feet tapping. A silent auction was held with items including a beautiful Circle of Love necklace donated by Bentley Diamond Importers of Wall, a Will, a golf foursome, a hotel stay, 3-day/2-night vacations, Tommy Hilfiger watches and much more!

Many of our members were extremely generous in all of the items they donated as door prizes or for our very successful silent auction. There were many smiling faces leaving the BBQ with wonderful gifts. We thank Bar A for hosting this event and Cold Stone Creamery for sponsoring this event. Thank you to all for helping us raise money for our high school seniors’ scholarships!

I used to spend quite a bit of time agonizing over the “perfect holiday gift” for clients. My criteria: Something reflective of my company’s culture and the client’s specific profile; Something decorative but functional; Something within budget.

One afternoon, after a day of “the perfect holiday gift” shopping, I turned on the radio in search of holiday music to help celebrate my achievement as I head back to the office. A factual plea came over the radio from the Monmouth Ocean Food Bank. As I remember: “this year, there was a shortage of turkeys and meals. Over 100,000 people in Monmouth and Ocean counties live on incomes that put them at risk of hunger at some time each month. 40% of them are children. 10% of them are elderly….”

All of a sudden, the holiday gifts in my back seat seemed inappropriate and inadequate. That was three years ago when I have found the “perfect holiday gift”. My company has been donating meals to

the Monmouth Ocean Food Bank in behalf of our clients in lieu of holiday gifts since then. As business owners, we hold some influence in our piece of the world. That bit of influence can be a tremendous

help for someone in need. As business owners, we are passionate in nature. There are several charitable organizations and causes that spark that passion. Stake your claim and give your “perfect holiday gift”.

You will find a charitable cause that is reflective of your company’s culture and client profile. It may not be decorative nor will it be functional. And as far as your budget, well… money is not the only gift. As business owners, we are also resourceful and innovative. We always find a way. When it comes time to write a sales letter, many people don’t know where to start. But writing doesn’t have to be a frightening experience. Here are some tips to make it easier! • Always use friendly, conversational language. It isn’t necessary to use phrases like “Enclosed please fine…” It is much

simpler to say, “Here is….” • Get their attention by identifying the problem. • Make sure you emphasize the benefits of your solution to the person reading the letter. It’s important to outline your offer,

but remember that the reader wants to know “What’s in it for me?” A good measure is to count the number of times you use the words “I” and “You”. If there are more “I’s” than “You’s”, you need to rewrite!

• Keep your letters short. A long letter can be intimidating and may stop the recipient from reading all of it. One page is usually sufficient.

• Tell them what you want them to do. If it’s to call you soon, say so. If you will call them, tell them when you will call. • Use a thesaurus to avoid repeating the same words. • Have someone you trust review your first draft. An objective,

second opinion is always valuable! Don’t be discouraged by constructive criticism. A good letter will go through many changes before the final version.

• Be sure to proofread. Spell-check may not catch all mistakes.

P.S. Did you know that next to the headline or opener, the P.S. is the second most-read section of a letter? Use it in your next letter!

The Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce (SMCC) held its Annual Meet the Mayors Event in September at the Residence Inn by Marriott on Jumping Brook Road in Neptune. Mayors and dignitaries in attendance included Mayor Thomas Arrone of Neptune City, Committeewoman Mary Beth Jahn attended in place of Mayor Jim Manning of Neptune Township, Mayor Richard Dunne of Manasquan, Mayor Robert Peters of Wall, Mayor Michael Ryan of Lake Como, Freeholders Barbara McMorrow and Bill Barham, Monmouth County Clerk Claire French, Assemblyman Sean Kean, and Wall Chief of Police David Morris.

SMCC President Joseph Stroin of HarborPoint Bancard welcomed everyone and introduced each dignitary. Mayor Thomas Arrone was the first to address the membership. Mayor Arrone has been Mayor for 4 years and was a councilman for 7 years. He said, “Neptune is a working class town and we have been reconstructing every road in town for the past 12 years and are now on the last road. We are in the process of a 21-acre redevelopment and we could use some help. We are also trying to use an open-door policy with all property owners in the area.” Committeewoman Mary Beth Jahn added that Neptune Township is very busy and that the Route 33 widening is near completion. “We are also working on West Lake Avenue and North Channel to

redevelop over the Belmar Bridge. Our town’s tagline is ‘Where community, business and tourism prosper’.” Mayor Richard Dunne of Manasquan said they had a great year and a great summer. He said, “All stores downtown are now

fully occupied with 7 new stores added this year. All of our town’s programs and activities have been well attended. We are working on the parking issue for the Manasquan Plaza (outdoor mini-mall) and have initiated a study as to what to do to integrate the plaza. There is limited space to work with. I would like people to be able to park and walk around town since everything is so close by.” Mayor Dunne also added that the Manasquan High School Football Team was ready to beat all the other town’s teams.

Next to address the group was Mayor Robert Peters of Wall who has been mayor for 5 years. Councilwoman Mary Burne accompanied him. Mayor Peters commented on the importance of quality of life in Wall where they have 17 parks, and 8 square miles of open space with the finest police department, their own public works department, grocery stores, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. They are also increasing the bike path. Mayor Peters jokingly added, “We need to keep the taxes down so I can stay here.”

Lake Como’s Mayor Michael Ryan reported that a lot of changes are going on and they are relying on the SMCC to help develop business. “We have 96% land in use. The 4% not in use is the auto wreckers’ area, the area around Lake Como and their parks. There never is enough money for everything we need to do. We are trying to change our image as a bar/tavern town and as a hyphen between Spring Lake and Belmar.” Mayor Ryan said, “The three main aspects that Lake Como are working on are the main street which is a county road and needs to be more user friendly, parking problem, and creating a healthy business community.” Mayor Ryan is a proponent of inner-local agreements with other communities and shared services to improve towns and he encourages other towns to get involved.

Freeholder Barbara McMorrow and Director Bill Barham took the floor next. Barbara said, “Monmouth County’s slogan is ‘The Place You Want To Be’. Barbara stated, “Freeholders work together to serve the people of Monmouth County. All is possible in the county because of everyone’s working together. Monmouth County offers everything and municipalities make it all possible. Director Barham added, “The County is moving along well. It has a AAA bonding rating meaning businesses can get the lowest possible rate when borrowing from the county. The county gives $2 million each year for parks.”

Monmouth County Clerk Claire French has been a member of the SMCC for 27 years. Her everyday dealings include working on elections with new voting machines with results in real time, land records to share with towns and counties, a passport office and the archives. She said, “It’s a privilege to work with the Chamber and its elected officials. The County will be holding an Archive and History Day in October.”

Assemblyman Sean Kean who represents the 11th District is running for state senate this year. Kean stated, “An important issue I would like to address is the monetization (sale/lease) of the state’s greatest asset, the Garden State Parkway. I believe we need to keep control of it and if we don’t we will be concerned about higher tolls and loss of management of the road including snow removal and repairs.”

Joe Stroin thanked everyone for attending and added that the SMCC is a very active Chamber that is promoting commerce within the Chamber. Joe said, “Important aspects of the Chamber include, commerce, the environment (parking and congestion),

healthcare which is expensive for small business, education which is important to the future of communities while keeping taxes at bay and to make it easier to do business in N.J.” Jim Dallas of Envirotactics of Wall who sponsored this event thanked all dignitaries for attending and agreeing to speak to our members. Envirotactics provided a gift certificate to Connolly Station of Belmar as a door prize. New members Robert Lame and Andrew Pelman of Triax Title Services, LLC of Belmar were recognized and introduced themselves at this meeting.
