It is my great pleasure to greet participants and supporters of the 11th Annual Yuhihai

Intercollegiate Kendo Tournament and to welcome Masuo Shinotsuka-sensei (8-Dan

Hanshi) and Koji Origuchi-sensei (8-Dan Kyoshi) of the Kanagawa Prefectural Police.

The tournament is an opportunity for participants to demonstrate the spirit of “Yuhihai” -

meaning a giant leap full of bravery and ambition - through the athleticism, teamwork and

sportsmanship they exhibit at the highest levels. I offer my encouragement to all kenshi and

wish them the best of luck in competition.

Kendo, or “the way of the sword,” embodies Japanese culture as well as martial arts values

and discipline. Kenshi gain a greater understanding of Japanese traditions through their

study of kendo, while serving as a bridge between Japan and other countries as they

incorporate the principles of the martial art into their daily interactions and lives.

By hosting Yuhihai, the UCLA Kendo Club has helped to promote Japanese Kendo within

the national collegiate community. I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the

UCLA Kendo Club and to all involved for their hard work and contributions to Japan-U.S.

friendships through intercollegiate Kendo.

Dear Kendo Athletes:

On behalf of UCLA Recreation, and the University of California, Los Angeles, I would like to welcome you and thank you for your participation in the 2018 Yuhihai Kendo Tournament at UCLA. If you have any questions regarding the event please do not hesitate to ask the UCLA team members as they will be happy to help you find what you need.

We are extremely excited to host this annual event at our University, and look forward to showcasing our campus as well as competition against some of the best Kendo athletes in the West. Our team does an excellent job of showcasing what they have to offer and do a brilliant job of managing such a large event. We are equally enthusiastic about supporting student development and providing you with an experience that you will never forget. This event will provide numerous opportunities for everyone involved to network with fellow students as well as compete in a collegial environment.

We are glad that you have decided to join us in supporting UCLA Kendo, UCLA Club Sports, and UCLA Recreation. We wish all of the teams and individuals good luck in the Yuhihai Invi tat ional and hope that all of you reach the goals you have set related to sportsmanship and competition.

Good luck this weekend!

Sincerely,

Brian Smith UCLA Recreation Program Director, Competitive Sports

Dear Participants,

Sincerely,

Masaharu Makino

On behalf of UCLA Kendo Club, welcome to the Yuhihai Annual Intercollegiate Kendo Tournament. The Yuhihai embodies the aspirations for the future of intercollegiate kendo. It is with great excitement that I encourage students to get involved in this event.

The term Yuhi means “a great leap full of bravery and ambition.” As such, the tournament aspires to motivate students to challenge themselves through Kendo competition. Through the process of rigorous preparation, training and teamwork, the goal is for all participants to contribute to the development of Intercollegiate Kendo.

The tenth annual UCLA Yuhihai Intercollegiate Kendo Tournament welcomes undergraduate students from universities across North America to compete. The spirit of competition will certainly develop friendships and build good will. May you all do your very best!

Shihan, UCLA Kendo
