SS1science of uv light Ultraviolet (UV) light is

electromagnetic radiation. You may get a tan when your skin absorbs UV radiation. Too much gives you sunburn.

UV damages your DNA. This can build up over many years and lead to skin cancer. UV also has health benefits. It triggers your body to make vitamin D.

The sun’s rays contain 3 types of UV:

The ozone layer blocks 97-99% of UV radiation from the sun from reaching the Earth’s surface.

Which objects give off UV light?

Can UV be harmful?

How are sunbeds linked to skin cancer?

●UVC is mostly filtered out by the Earth’s atmosphere.

●UVB is what makes your skin burn and is the main cause of skin cancer.

●UVA makes up most of sunlight and makes skin age. It can also cause skin cancer.

Sunbeds give off UVA and UVB rays like the sun

Introduction: Abigail will explain the science of UV light.

Check evidence: She will describe the evidence which supports our claim, and the evidence that doesn’t.

Researcher: ............................................... Claim: Sunbeds increase your risk of getting skin cancer.

Summarise: She will explain how well the evidence supports our claim.

Next steps: Abigail will suggest further tests. Or if the claim is wrong, she will suggest one that fits better.

Is there any evidence to support

the claim*?

Explain HOW WELL the evidence supports the claim* overall. Explain why the

evidence opposes the claim* or is irrelevant.

Suggest a test to make the claim stronger. Describe the results you expect if the claim* is correct.
