Dr. Keely Muscatell, Assistant Professor of Social Psychology, is the inaugural re-cipient of the Ann Rankin Cowan Excellence Award for High-Impact Research in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. The aim of this $20,000 Ann Rankin Cowan Excellence Award is to provide a faculty member with seed fund-ing to launch the innovative and meaningful early-stage research necessary to apply for external funding, thereby supporting research that can ultimately translate into clinical applications and therapeutic treatments for society. This award is made possible through the generous support of Ann Rankin Cowan (Psychology ‘75). Dr. Muscatell was chosen as the inaugural recipient for her compelling work at the intersection of social neuroscience and health, which has tremendous potential for original and high impact contributions to the field of psychology and neuroscience. Dr. Linda Dykstra, Adjunct Professor, and Co-Principal Investigator of the Seeding Postdoctoral Innovators in Research and Education Program, is the recipient of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experi-mental Therapeutics’ (ASPET) 2020 P.B. Dews Lifetime Achievement Award for Research in Behavioral Phar-macology. The ASPET Division for Behavioral Pharmacology sponsors the P.B. Dews Award to recognize out-standing lifetime achievements in research, teaching, and professional service. The award is presented bien-nially during the ASPET Annual Meeting and consists of a $1,000 honorarium, a commemorative plaque, travel stipends, and an invitation to deliver a special lecture during the meeting. Dr. Dykstra was selected for her innovative, outstanding lifetime achievements in behavioral pharmacology research and her strong commitment to the teaching and mentoring of younger scientists. Dr. Dykstra’s research focused on the be-havioral effects of opioid analgesics. She has been on the faculty at UNC Chapel Hill her entire career, where she served as Dean of the Graduate School, a William Rand Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor in the Depart-ment of Psychology and Neuroscience, and a jointly appointed member of the Department of Pharmacolo-gy. Congratulations, Dr. Dykstra!

Dr. Donald Lysle, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Behavioral and Integrative Neuroscience, and Dr. Todd Thiele, Professor of Behavioral and Integrative Neuroscience, are the recipients of a 2020 National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) R21 grant. The Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award is intended to encourage exploratory/developmental research by providing support for the early and con-ceptual stages of project development. Drs. Lysle and Thiele received a total award of over $408,000 (over two years) for their project, “A Role for IL-1 Beta in Ethanol Withdrawal-Induced Increase of PTSD-Like Phe-notype.”

arship Program. Dr. Jones dedi-

cated more than 50 years of his

life to the Thurstone Lab and,

upon his passing, provided finan-

cial support for quantitatively-

oriented researchers and acade-

micians to visit as guests of the

Thurstone Lab.

Visitors must be at least 5-years

post Ph.D. and can be working in

a wide range of settings. Stays

can be as short as four weeks

and as long as a full academic

year. Visitors receive up to

$2,000 per month to help offset

living expenses.

Visitors will be provided with

office space and computing sup-

port and the key expectation is

that the individual be in some

way actively involved in the intel-

lectual community of the Thur-

stone Lab.
