Merry Xmas for all the Ford boys… never let it be said I’m unbalanced – no, wait…

Well here we are again, at the end of another year, asking ourselves, “How the hell did that happen?”

2015 was a massive year for the club. It wasn’t until I read the list at the start of Chris’s race report that I remembered half of it. For me the big ticket items were: the huge increase in membership, particularly juniors getting involved, the startline mods that have resulted in double the fun and triple the track time for all, the overall hike in the profile of the Club generally, and the fact that in the course of the year not one event was lost due to rain or any other reason. From where I sit, as a relative newbie, all of these indicate a Club that’s hitting 2nd

gear (or 3rd, depending on what you drive) and winding out nicely. With 2016 around the corner, I can see our little club becoming one the other clubs talk about.

Finally, much as I hate to end the year on a sad note, it has to be done. On behalf of the Club, Jobbo, I’d like to offer our most sincere condolences on the loss of your Mum. She sounded like a sweetheart even if her timing was a little rough. Look after yourself, and don’t forget you’ve got a lot of friends.

Same goes for the rest of you. While I doubt this newsletter will be out in time for Xmas, hope you have a good one, likewise New Years’, and take care

because we want to see all of you back out on or around the track next year. Bring on 2016!

A little light on pics this month, so thought I’d throw in some Editors’ Favourites from throughout the year…

A Note from the Prez…

Well we are at the end of 2015 and what a fantastic year we have had.

Take a minute to reflect back.

Calendar A3 Flier Radio Campaign Won the CAMS grant for Junior Development Ran ads in the newspaper Bought a bus Hosted two and hired out one VCAS round Did not cancel a round! Held an event up the back

instead of cancelling due to rain. That was a first Changed the start line in July. Increased runs by at

least double Ran a two day multi club event in August. Ran three sets of cars on the track at the same time,

also a first Had a display in the information centre Added deep fryers to our catering equipment Club Displays at: Quamby Tractor Pull, Swan Hill

Show, Lions Club Show and Shine, Septembers’ Motorbike event

Raised some money for mens’ mental health and helped raised awareness, also helped motorbike club with the same

Hired a shower for each two day event which led to more campers each time Added the first set of safety lights to the bridge; more to come Trackmaster program updated to include more runs and more stats Added a large number of new members from 20 something to 80 something Influx of juniors to our ranks, making the future look bright New officials have been added after much chasing

and lots of lost docs. We have managed to get some new officials completed with CAMS

Big changes to the number of helpers before and after events setting up and putting away

First time out on track as passenger was Dawn Alexander with Kiel, and Greg Hull and Beryl Lowe (First Aid) with Chris Gibson. These are notable due to the time they have been involved with the club

Club Car numbers are growing. While we lost one and tried to make it into a fund raiser with some success, we now have four club cars, though two are in need of work (a clutch and a rear swing arm)

Equipment is also growing; Glen managed to get a donation of a cultivator to rip the track before works from Murray Mallee Machinery as well as a donation of parts to repair the big tractor

Coburns Earth Moving have been unbelievable to us this year with help watering and grading

We tried an ambitious day of major works on the track with a small tip truck, a small digger and the club tractors. While this job got way too big and tested out most of us, the end result was a great track that lasted from the August two day event to the September two day event, through October and with only a light smudge before yet another two day event in November. Two of those racedays were VCAS rounds. The track held up very well

Had some amazing video work done out at the track by GetReel Productions and a VCAS video was made and sold to competitors

Sorry, it is a long list but it could have had more on it. We can all be proud of the achievements made. To me that was very impressive and it has come about with the help and support the members of the club have given throughout the year.

Roll on 2016!

Getting toey just thinking about it!

This was the last chance for a run in 2015 and some 26 drivers grabbed the chance. Greg Hull was on duty as Club Chief and did a great job. Thanks very much Greg.

You know how you think you know how it’s going to be? There you are, calmly sitting at the line, the lights go red, yellow, yellow and you’re off without a care in the world. You have done this a few times before, flat out off the line, small left hander, still got the power on, to the next left hander then the quick right. Now normally here is a bit of a slide and some pedal work, you’re having a ball and then on

your way to the next left. You get the picture, just another day right? Hell NO!

All was fine until I got to the first right and the car reacted as though it had 400 pounds of air pressure in all its’ tyres, even the spare which was still in the pits. Slid straight out to the left, off the track. Ok, I thought, we can fix this. Overcorrect, straight off the right side of the track... bad fix. But I’m thinking I must have messed up, so back on the gas - because we all know that fixes everything, right? WRONG!!! Lose it on the back corner, almost slide off the banking, and then can’t stop at the tyre wall - at one point thinking I was going to go behind it. Was way out on the left, never been out there before. Jobbo probably has though..!

Man it was different, as you can see by the photo of Adam Smith at the tyre bank leaving Kiel Tripcony in the passenger seat saying… (well you get the picture – not allowed to print the words). Anyway, the track stayed like that all day and once you had the feel for it, it was a lot of fun with some unbelievable slides for me at the end of the banked curves. It was unreal, a big throw sideways and wait for the corner, then hard on it. Great day, and I must say that almost every time we have an

event it is different in some way but this was something special. Either that or I really did have 400 pounds in the tyres.

Now the trash talk on Facebook among the ladies has been building with Rose Pepers stirring the pot with Stacey Paynter (this years’ Class L winner)and Ehlana Gibson, while Jess Roberts and Deb Green remained quiet throughout. Two of these ladies have new cars, Rose Pepers a white Toyota Celica and Deb Green a white Nissan Bluebird, so next year looks as though Stacey will have to work harder to get the 3rd trophy on the wall.

Now Rose was going to be happy to just complete a lap as that was more than Rob got out of the Gift Horse first time around. Deb was going to have a good day regardless of what happened. Anyway both ladies drove the wheels off them all day (in Roses’ case, almost literally..! Ed). Sorry Rose, while it was very close with less than 3 seconds over the 4 laps separating them, the “Quiet Achiever” gets bragging rights for the day. Well done Deb Green. Looking forward to next years’ L Class battles as Ehlana Gibson and Jess Roberts join the fight.

The hard luck stories of the day: Jack Hawkins, this year’s Class J winner blew an engine in the Hyundai and while that was bad enough, later he was driving Hayden Stewarts’ Subaru when the right front tyre went flat and over he went. Col Plumridge, Colin Obrien and myself pulled up. Jack was fine except for the shaking. Oh and he is now the owner of a very second hand Subaru. Rodney Stevenson was having a good day until the oil tried to get out, stopping his day early, and something must have happened to the Carmichael brothers Liam and Toby as they did not make the end with Liam’s Commodore (busted diff – Ed).

There was a father and son battle in Class D with Darby Anderson and his son Marcus, Darby getting the better of Marcus by some 20 odd seconds over the 4 runs. Apparently Darby was even trying the 2 wheeled approach on some corners leading to a word of discouragement from the officials. Barry Middleton was also close to those two being just 2 seconds off Marcus and he had a friend along in Bruce Pollard who also had a great day and was looking pretty quick by the end.

Class E saw Adam Smith and Kiel Tripcony both in Adam’s Ute (Mr Dust) doing battle with the loser having to buy a slab. I thought that was going to be heavily weighted in Adams’ favour, it being his ute, but Kiel took him on and gave it a good go. However, Adam is the proud owner of the slab. Having a good look at the numbers I would not be so sure it would have stayed that way had the clutch not played up in the ute.

Page 7: Web viewApparently Darby was even trying the 2 wheeled approach on some corners leading to a word of ... [Wankel-type] engine and forced induction the swept

Colin Obrien was also having a good day in his Commodore to finish between Adam and Kiel.

Seven juniors had a crack on the day and with the exception of Jack Hawkins being 15 seconds out in front, the rest were covered by only 12 seconds. There was some very good consistent driving going on here, and Jack was in an all-wheel drive for some of the day which skewed the numbers a little.

Daniel McDonald was chipping away all day with his quickest at the end. Steven Barr had a run in Tony Middletons’ Commodore and seemed to enjoy it; I did notice he had the odd flick spin a time or two from facing the other way. Jake Vallence

gave the Club Sigma a go and was almost 30 seconds a lap quicker at the end of the day. Well done Jake. That thing does have some go in it and is a handful. The Trainor brothers Josh and Ash also had a great day and managed quite a few laps, thanks Dad for going with them.

Class P saw a new love affair with Glen King-Gee coming out with another car -(sorry Neil Albert) a Lancer coupe - and he loved it. It showed up top of the class. Well done Glenn. Neil Donnan was not far behind Glenn with another son, Rob King-Gee close behind. If you have read all of this you will be starting to get the picture that there must be some trash talk at lots of dinner tables in the Mallee.

Hayden Stewart, well done and commiserations all in the same event. You came out just to see how your car would go, a Subaru Liberty Outback, I think. It went well, was great off the line and was good for 3rd outright on the day. Pretty good for a first day out, but then it ended up being its’ last day out when Jack came to grief in it and it rolled!!

As always there were more things that I could have or should have got down here that happened, both during the year of 2015 and the December Meeting. Sorry for what I have missed.

Anyway, great day and cannot wait to do it all again next year. Roll on 2016. CG

Things to do to your car in the break:

Ok, so we have two months off, just forget all about your race car right? WRONG!!! Have a good look over it and fix those little things, like the exhaust falling off, tubes in the tyres, etc. Give it a bit of a service, you know, oil filters, maybe a cam belt, check the hoses and check for loose items including wheel nuts. I know it is only driven on Sundays, but if you want it to work well on that Sunday a little TLC will help get you through the year.

Tips and Tricks:

Ok, I have mentioned this many times, TUBES!!!!!! You can save a car with these. Under a $100 for four fitted, but if you have not done this, then do not just assume that your tyres are up. Each time you corner hard the tyres are moving on the rim and dirt is pushing in under the bead. Go back to the pits after a few runs and check them. Yes, a pain in the @#$% but it’s better than a rollover. Fit tubes and check your pressures from time to time. They can still go flat but nowhere near as often.

You can almost bet when looking at a car that has rolled, 9 times out of 10 it has a flat tyre.

Greg Hull gave me some good tips: Do your helmet and your seatbelts up tight. You are thinking, yes of course, common sense really. Common sense is not that common! Just having your helmet strap loose can let your helmet travel far enough to come off the back of your head, and it can choke you. Likewise if your seatbelts are loose you can move around that much that if your car rolls your helmeted head can act as a pile driver on the roof, possibly doing damage to your neck or spine. So do everything up tight and enjoy. This info came from an Ambo.

Licence Structure and Pathway

The Licensing and Accreditation Guide is a reference guide for new and current CAMS Accredited Officials containing information on the National Officiating Program; licence application, upgrade and maintenance; training and development; policies and procedures. Click the link below to download:

Licensing and Accreditation Guide 2013-2014 (pdf)

The CAMS Accredited Official licensing structure has two parts: Graded Officials Licences and Non Graded Officials Licences.

Graded Officials Licences have six grading levels and are available to all CAMS Accredited Officials to achieve. Non Graded Officials Licenses have two types: Specialist Licence holders are those that hold professional qualifications and are registered medical service providers. Appointed Licence holders are those that have been appointed by the management of CAMS.

The diagram below shows the licence pathway and the available disciplines in which to specialise at Bronze level. Each of the disciplines in blue have an associated training module, as does General Official (Introductory Module), Club Chief and Silver level. For more information on training modules, visit Training.

An official may hold different levels for different disciplines of officiating at any

one time (e.g. they could be a Gold Steward and also a Bronze Rally Official). The graded levels are defined as follows:

Drivers need to be aware that there are minimum standards for clothing on race day and that clothing standards are part of the scrutineering process. That means that if you are not dressed in your race gear when the car is being scrutineered, then you will have to produce what you are wearing. Below is a summary of what can and cannot be worn when racing. If these standards are not met then you will not pass scrutineering and will not be able to race.

Helmet Must meet Australian standards. In good condition. No cracks, dents or deep scratches and it cannot be painted. The lining must be in good condition. Fasteners need to be in good condition.

Clothing Drivers and passengers must be dressed in clothing that covers them from neck to ankle to wrists. The clothing can not be nylon. For example, long sleeved Visy tops cannot be worn.

Footwear Footwear can be either shoes or boots. Both need to have a leather upper but can have elastic sides. For example, pull on work boots are ok but nylon sneakers are not. Leather upper sneakers/runners are ok.
