About Termites - The termites are also called as “White ants”. These are social insects living

in a colony comprising Queen, King, Workers and Soldiers. The colonies of subterranean termites are located in the soil. Their basic food being anything containing cellulose, in search of food they gain entry into the buildings. Each termite colony has millions of individual members. The tiny cream-colored worker termites invade buildings and cause damage to structure often long before they are discovered. They consume and damage all types of wood, paper, hardboards, books, clothes etc. In search of food they also damage Leather, rubber, electrical wire coatings, nylon, neoprene, thermocol practically everything man cherishes to own. They enter the buildings through foundation, expansion joints, lift wells, utility ducting such as electrical, telephone cables or tunneling through cracks in the walls. They also construct mud tubes for their movement, which is a first sign of presence of termites. They have ability to travel long distances in search of food. It’s common to see termites in top floors of multistory buildings.

GROUND FLOOR:

a) Where concrete plinth protection is provided around the building, vertical holes of 12mm dia. shall be drilled close to the external wall at a distance of one foot centre to centre and one foot deep in the concrete and inject chemical emulsion at 250 ML per hole. In absence of concrete plinth protection, the soil in contact with the external wall of the building shall be treated by making 3 inch wide and one foot deep channel and saturating the soil with chemical emulsion at a rate of 2.25 lit per running meter.

FIRST FLOOR:

b) Treatment of internal walls on 1st floor shall be carried out by drilling 12mm dia. Holes along the wall & floor junction at a distance of one foot centre to centre at an angle of 45 degrees, and injecting chemical emulsion into the drilled holes to a minimum of 200ml per hole.

c) If the flooring laid is of granite, marble or ceramic, holes shall be drilled 1” above skirting level.

UPPER FLOORS: (above first floor)

a) Drilling shall be carried out at 3 feet distance along the wall as above, except in the vicinity of infestation. In the vicinity of infestation drilling and injection treatment shall be carried out at 2 foot distance for the infested wall. b) Drilling shall be carried out in common areas such as stair cases, common passages etc of the building. c) Treatment of the soil adjacent to pipes and cables by spraying and/or drilling holes and injecting Chemical

emulsion where they enter into the building.
