AIRPLAY Gregg Allman, "I'm No Angel", Epic. Although the big guy has yet to sprout wings, you'd have to call this week's performance a serious return from pop purgatory. In the midst of thick competition, Gregg reels in 101 adds (complete with 29 heavies) for our highest #19 debut. He's even got instatop 5 calls at WKRR, WIBA, and WIXV. Radio reaction: Doug "One of the year's best new songs" Clifton, KBCO; Michael "Lives up to all the pre-release hype" Davis, KFMG; Alan "He has the pipes to pull off a huge comeback" White, KILO; Dave "Rave of the week" Lange, WLAV; Rick "One of several tracks that will dominate album radio" Panneck, WAPL; Mike "Never heard him sound better" Boyle, WDHA;, and Rad "Could be THE comeback of '87" Messick, WDIZ--and that's but a sampling of the knee deep raves we heard this week.

    ANALYSIF

Barbusters, "Light of Day", Epic. The #2 Most Added position rates--but you can damn

sure expect a lot more than 32 adds next week. As noted by KILO's Alan White, "The combination of a

great Springsteen song plus Joan's performance and interpretation add up to a smash and a half".... From

WBRU's Alison Stewart, "The song is so strong that if the movie's a hit the Barbusters just might be Chartbusters".... ditto WIYY's Chris Emry, "If the movie is half as good as the song, theater owners will be wearing big smiles". Not to mention programmers

with co-pros. WPDH's Pam Brooks sez, "Hats off to Joan Jett. I've seen the coming attractions and heard the song, and both deserve rave reviews". New at #58.

  • THE HARD REPORT

REO Speedwagon, "Life As We Know It", Epic. As is the case with Lou Gramm, there's definitely more where the instantly white hot single came from. "That Ain't Love" lays claim to 36 increases this week, slamming out a 13-10 Hard Hundred move. As for the album, this particular incarnation finds the band's collective libido even more active than usual, with all kinds of soft focus themes for back seaters from 16 on up--all thick with Gary's signature guitar and Kevin's equally distinctive vocals. We like "Variety Tonight" and "One Too Many Girlfriends", and "New Way to Love" gets the point across, too.

Little America, "Walk On Fire", Geffen. Just when you thought it was raining rootsrockers, up pops a a "major new talent" that's simply a really neat suburban band. The first 12" here sounds fresh and inviting, if only for the lack of gimmicry and posing. There's plenty of guitar, it's easy to dance to and even easier to sing along with. Redbeard was right.

More On The Picks... Paul Simon, "The Boy In The Bubble", WB. Occasionally we like to use that front page real estate to carry on about a record you're probably aware of and ready to add, and that's the case here. All but the very hardest AOR's would be way off base to hesitate on "Bubb " at this stage of the game. Between the album's growing musical and social acclaim, the first two singles' rock radio success, and the custom CD, they don't get any more obvious than this. Really. You need a personal call from the man himself?

The Cutting Crew, "Died In Your Arms", Virgin. Flow is the real deal In successful music programming and we have to put in another front page shot for the best new mid tempo balance record we've heard of late. The overall feel here is definitely atmospheric and continental, but there's nothing at all affected, cliched or dancey about this number. You'll hear nice clean vocals and great female appeal lyrics. You'll also hear a tune you'd hate to have used against you down the dial.

    ALSO NEW THIS WEEK

Jason and the Scorchers, "Shotgun Blues",EMI. Now here's a portrait of a track that is truly itching to explode. The band is building on a terriffic two tune track record from the latest album, with an Intense tour to back 'em up. "Shotgun" is just over two minutes of rip 'em up fun, the perfect wide demo rock and roll punctuator. And If for some reason you might be thinking of waiting a week or two, the coming issue's 20+ adds (and half a dozen industrial strength majors) should turn you around.

Martee LeBow, "Love's A Liar", Atlantic. Once again, Chryssie and Ann Wilson are the only current female voices on rock radio--and that ain't good. Except for Ms. LeBow. The little lady with the big pipes is back with a tune that Messrs. Mellencamp or Seger would be proud of—and she's practically got those playlists open to herself. I know this thing had our whole building locked with just one listen and could well be one of the best leftfielders you'll audition this week.

"Over The Top" Soundtrack, Columbia. Soundtracks are like letter bombs--you just can't tell what you're dealing with til it goes off under your nose. With Sammy already half way to the moon, you'd best get acquainted with what your CHR competition will be pounding in a week. You'll see quick crossover play on Kenny Loggins' "Meet Me

Half Way" and be sure to check out Asia's "Gypsy Soul" as a point of interest. What the hell, have a battle of the bands with Esquire.

Rank and File, "Black Book", Rhino. I've always had a thing for the Bobby Fuller Four, and you can sure count me in as a charter member Bodeans fan. And that's why I like this record--it's got a little of both. Plus it's funny. And now that one of the world's hippest labels has cracked the mass market with Billy and the Beaters, you never know what they might pull off next.

Also In The Most Added... Sammy Hagar, "Winner Takes It All", Col. I remember when the Bay Area and parts of Texas were the only sure fire startup regions for Sam. But now? Try 14 top fives in just two weeks —with WPLR, KGON, WWCT, WAOR, WGIR, KPOI, KRNA, KLBJ and KFMX front and center. The Increases come just as quickly, with WPLR, KORS, KFMG, KILO, WMGM, WIBA, WAPL, and KRQU pacing a field of 15.It's new on 30, now on 124, underlined 25-16. WMAD's David Anderson says, "Give David credit for a tasteful, driving adult rocker.... WLLZ's Jim Pemberton adds, "It's already moved up several positions In our mediums and should be heavy before long". And this advice from the Catfish at WHMD, "the new solo will definitely cross over with all the Sly exposure it's getting.Lead the competition"..

Santana, "Veracruz", Col. Their latest sounds fine on 99--with 28 more adds just in. It's heavy on 12, and already increased on 11, including KFOG, KILO, KRQR, KMBY, KVRE, KSOY, and WTPA. As WKDF's David Hall comments, "It's great to hear Carlos working with some of his old pals, such as Greg Rollie and Buddy Miles. The result of some of the best Santana music in years".... One of this week's longest gainers, 48-35.

Lou Gramm, "Ready Or Not", Atlantic. How seriously is the format taking this artist? Well, you can't do much better than a #1 played single and legit airplay action on more tracks. "Midnight Blue" pushes 5-1 with heavy play just about everywhere, and a 5-2 Most Requested move. "Ready Or Not" takes second with 23 first week adds, and a #77 debut. "Heartache" claims 8 stations, with "If I Don't Have You" new on 6. Naturally, we're talking the week's highest Lp debut at #5. KEZO's Joe Blood responds, "Shockingly good. It has to be the best solo 1p released this year in terms of writing, production and total execution".... From WFYV's Lex Staley, "It's the Foreigner record that should have been. Nobody sounds better with a raw edge.".... from KLOL's Dayna Steele, "Two more tracks from Lou go in. Every single song on that record is a hit".... and this from KGON's Inessa York, "Lou is catching on fast with top 5 phones, and there is enough on the album to hold us until the Foreigner guys go on tour"...

Steve Winwood, "The Finer Things", Island/VVB. Another one of this report's Premiere performers, Steve's latest racks up a 35-21 advance. New on 23, now on 108.

  • THE NEW AIRPLAY ANALYSIS r-- HARD REPORT

    1

Robin Trower, "No Time", Crescendo. There's no let up in sight. Or sound. Of 104 now playing, we found only 2 decreases. Probably stations that somehow got stiffed on the CD. And hey! Where's ours?! Robin strings together 11 increases (KOME, KLOS, WIMZ, WAQX), as 9 adds, 3 powers and 20 heavies roll up yet another 29-24 underline. WFYV's Lex Staley calls it the comeback of the year--and we'd have to agree.

Los Lobos, "Shakin Shakin Shakes", Slash/'NB. 22 Increases ranks fourth in that key stat, with closeout play now approaching the 150 mark« Now power at 4, heavy at 45 more and underlined 20-14. You ought to be following that lead with at least one more track, with "Rosa Lee" and "One Time, One Night" two easy ways to go.

Julian Cope, "World Shut Your Mouth", Island. You know it's over the top when Ted and WMMR come in. We're talking no risk. WLAV, WIZN and KFMX also add, bolstered by 9 play-ups: KLOS, WHJY, KMBY, KDJQ, and WWZU included. Up 38-33 on the song chart, 28-26 on the album.

Don Dixon, "Praying Mantis", Enigma. This one's proving to be one of the best long haul performers on the street--major acts included. Your name here. Whattaya know —six more adds, with WGTR, WKDF, WCCC and WONE out front. Also check his ongoing request action —currently #10 nationally. Upped at WHCN, KGB and three more. "Mantis" moves 53-48. It's now on 62, and it's earned a run on double that number.

Triumph, "Just One Night", MCA. This dramatic change of pace picks up a nice 88-75 move, with new air on WLL_Z, WQFM, WCMF, WAQX, WBYR, and WRCN. Now on 27, including KSHE, KGB, KOME, WHJY, KISS, KLPX, KMOD, and KRIX.

Georgia Satellites, "Battleship Chains", Elektra. At the rate people are calling for "Battleship" you know they're much more than a one off novelty appeal item. 22 top fivers bring it in at #4 Most Requested, with 12 ups, 4 adds, and 38 heavies cooking up an 18-17 track underline. If Skynyrd were around today

Stevie Ray Vaughan, "Willie The Wimp", Epic. Getting second tracks from live sessions up and running is next to impossible, and you've got to hand it to Epic for not wimping out. Well done. Willie's now on 95 reporters, with 8 ups, 8 heavies, and a 40-34 underline. The Lp holds 33-30.

Ben Orr, "Too Hot to Stop" Elektra. Best back to back weeks Ben's had since the first single took off. #12 Most Added with 10, upped at WKQQ, KFMQ, WOUR, DC101, KAZY and 4 more, now heavy at 17. The Lp pushes to #21 behind the track's 34-27 underline.

Starship, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", RCA. The on column pushes to 100,8 of which list power and 33 heavy. The 18 station play up count ranks #6 there, with KZEW, KLOL, KSJO, WDIZ, KYYS, WLVQ and WWCK among those increasing. The phone count found top 5 response at WQMF, WWZU, KFMQ, KRQU, WIMZ and KRNA. Underlined 24-20.

World Party, "Ship Of Fools", Chrysalis. As per the 16 play increases, WP is still building nicely, too. WQFM, WRIF, WYNF and WGTR muscle up another strong week week, with DC101, KDKB, WEGR, WCCC, and KQRS leading 16 play jumps. And now that you have the special CD, be sure to also check the Junior Walkeresque "World Groove" and their version of "Nowhere Man". Meanwhile, "World Party" builds 8-7.

Esquire, "Moving Together", Geffen. Everyone I speak with seems to prefer "To The Rescue" or "Sunshine", but for some reason the 12" continues to garner the airplay. It's new on 9, now on 29, and our 4th longest Hard Hundred gainer, 99-85. WHCN's Kim Alexander comments, "No, it's not a first listen record, but after four or five listens that baby kicks in and won't let go.".... KBLE's Ron Sorenson says, "They fill the art rock slot nicely and we'll go several cuts in".... and from WLLZ's Jim Pemberton, "Love the Esquire. Rarely do i sit in my office and listen to a record five times in a row...85% positive on Rate At Eight."

Rob Jungklas, "Make It Mean Something", Manhattan. Updating on Robbie J's mean moves: Six adds Include KLOL, KLOS, and WRXL.... Nine ups Include WEGR, WAAF and KWHL. Double bulletted -33-31 on the track, 36-34 for the album.

lggy Pop, "Real Wild Child", A&M. The Pretenders tour is factoring in big time, no? WDIZ, WQFM and WLVQ add this week, with WKFM, WBYR, KLPX and KKDJ increasing. That means it's underline time once again, 39-36....The track's 91 stations deep and just weeks away from the big break he's worked for, so hang in there.

Tesla, "Modern Day Cowboy", Geffen. One of the best long term developers out there comes up with 6 adds--including WHCN, KEZO and WLNZ, with KGB, WTPA, KKDJ, AND W WTR leading six increases. Now a top 5 phone item at KDJQ, KNCN, WAQX, WRCN and WXRC. Underlined 51-46. Still a very safe bet to go the distance.

Ratt, "Dance", Atlantic. Even though a number of album stations played this one on Lp release, it's still the smartest re-add on the street. Top 40 is poised to break the song wide open, and the now platinum plus album sales and major video success should in themselves have you ready to go back. Could well be bigger than "Round and Round".

  • 1---Deep Purple, "Call Of The Wild", Polygram. 3 Toldja this was the track. 23 more adds and increases

from KDKB, WHCN and WIXV give it this week's second biggest 57-41 move--with momentum that could well put it in front of "Bad Attitude" next week. Words for the wise from WLLZ's Jim Pemberton, "So So research on 'Bad Attitude' moves 'Call' into medium".... Clearly the one to be on, with 65 now playing.

Crowded House, "Don't Dream It's Over", Cap. In reality, this baby's thru the proverbial roof. How about 16 adds in a week when most of the "priorities" had to sit and wait? Increases include KLPX, WAAF, WCCC, WLVQ, KBCO, KMOD, KNCN, WBRU and WNGZ. The rotation stacks up 13 deep in heavies and 4 in powers, with 74 stations listing current play. The album totals reflect with the week's longest, strongest 44-37 Underline.

Eric Clapton, "Miss You", Duck/VVB. 15 adds and 6 ups (KOME, WDIZ, WOUR, WAQX) give the soon to be lead cut a healthy 30-23 underline. It's now on 96 with 3 powers and 35 heavies. One you should be on or strongly considering.

Psychedelic Furs, "Heartbreak Beat" Col. The stats continue to back those breakthrough predictions--ours and others--with our third longest 76-59 Hard Hundred gain. It's #7 Most Added with 17, now on 72, increased at 7. Currently heavy at 14. WBRU's Alison Stewart reports top 5 phones, and WBLM's Robin Mathieu says, "Heartbreak Beat'

shows major crossover potential, but I feel AOR can own this act in the end"....

    Hard Acts to Follow:

Concrete Blonde, "True", IRS. We predicted top-flight first quarter breakout status for this act, and their chart topping 82-65 underline is a huge step in the right direction. It's #10 Most Added with 14, with 5 Increases, 6 heavies and 63 now on board. This rare cameo appearance from WXRT's Lin "Am I too late for a report?" Brehmer, "After hearing Concrete Blonde on the airwaves over the past few weeks, I'm more convinced than ever that Concrete Blonde will be a household word by summertime"....

Pseudo Echo, "Living In A Dream", RCA. Another encouraging week. New air includes WBCN, WLAV, WRIF, KOME, KRQR, WBRU, CILO, and WVVCK--definitely heavy on quality calls. KOZZ ups, with WXXP and KEYX listing top 5 phones. Now on 49 reporters, underlined 80-74. WBRU's Alison Stewart feels "Living In A Dream' is such a collage of sound that It would intrigue even the most conservative of listeners"...and WFYV's Lex Staley adds, "It has been met with great acceptance and it looks like they'll finally get their shot at the big time".

The Stranglers, "Always the Sun", Epic. Yo Chartwatchers of the World--check those double debuts: #99 on the Hard Hundred and #49 Album Impact. Hey, it's a start. This in-house favorite looks like a phone getter anywhere it gets a solid shot--with WNEW, WMAD, WXXP and WVVV now listing top 5 response. From WUVA's John Malinowski, "The name of the band is misleading, but the song sounds GREAT on the air."..from KGRQ's Jerry LaCheit, "The Stranglers are getting big phones. I love everything about that song." And what does Jer like best? "The way it grabs you by the balls and just keeps getting better". But what do you really think?

THE NEW AIRPLAY ANALYSIS HARD REPOR1r---- --

China Crisis, "Arizona Sky", A&M. You basic three listen special now sits atop a grand total of 35 reports, doing especially well on Adult targetted stations, where it moves 58-52*. Ups at KGRO, KSTM, KBCO, KDKB and WHFS, and adds at KLPX and WRKI bring it on the Hard Hundred at #98. What can we tell you--it's like New Age music with words.

The Saints "Just Like Fire Would", TVT. I've got to hand it to Tom Teuber and David Anderson at WMAD. Those guys are really doing a fine job of finding hits lately. They lead the way on Crowded House, they're already into serious top 5 phones on the Stranglers--and now they're one of five quick adds on the Saints, which we're equally crazed about. It's early Graham Parker meets Mick Jagger. Just listen a few times and you'll get it.

Vinnie Vincent, "No Substitute", Chrysalis. You will not find a better pop metal powerballad crossover anywhere. Period. Sales, image, kids, adults--everything. Vinnie racks up an 81-69 underline, with new air on KFMQ, WAQX, WWZU, KRZQ and KFMX...KNAC and KWHL increase, with KDJQ and KNCN our current request leaders. Now on 31.

Hank Williams, "My Name Is Bocephus", WB. Boring, mid-tempo, no response records got you down, bunky? Weeeeell. Here's the solution to th,. Take it from WRXK's Greg Mull, "I'll guarantee top 5 phones on the first play. This rockin' blues tune will hit our core right where they live".... and KWIC's Tim Kelley adds, "Who gets a few test plays and them jumps into top 5 requests before it's even added? They call him Bocephus. I call it a hit!!"... Call in on at KQRS, WQFM, WMAD, WKLS, WAAF and KDKB to name a few.

Waysted, "Heaven Tonight", Capitol. Our favorite new melodic rocker collects another 9 adds, with WLLZ, WKDF, WFYV and KLAQ out front. It's currently on 29, including WHJY, WDHA, WAQX, KRIX, KAZY, KMOD, WMGM, KSHE, KNCN, KISS and KFMG. Up 92-79 in overall play, underlined 74-58 Core.

Spoons, "Bridges Over Borders", Polygram. Like most of '87's new/developing acts, the Spoons may have taken a bit of backseat to the current automatic onslaught, but there's definitely quality in them thar adds: WLLZ, WBCN, WBAB, and WEGR and KDJO highlight the new action, with increases at KYYS, KOZZ and WKFM. Currently on 61. The 1p debuts at #47, with the track up a notch to #64.

In Pursuit, "Only For You", MTM Isn't it interesting that MTM's first real rock radio project may get its foothold at album radio via MTV. The video is indeed a grabber and we've found the rather mixed medium arrangement of the tune--and Emma's vocals in particular —really sticks in your brain. As KESI's Jim Robinson says, "In Pursuit stands out as perfect texture for Das BMW Boomers. Really good 25+ stuff". Aready on KESI, KZEL, WTAO, WTOS, WONE, WHFS, WRAS, WEQX, KMOD, KTCL,

    KRQU, and WKDF.

Colin James Hay, "Hold Me", Col. I must admit those early doubts were there, but it sure sounds good on WIOQ. They like it enough to increase play, along with KBCO, KRIX, KGB, WMAD, and several more. It's currently on 80, 10 of which have it heavy. Underlined 50-43.

  • THE HARD REPORT INDUSTRIAL NOISE

DAIRY HOME COMPANION I know it's the buzz of the industry, but since it's

already been in the LA papers and VARIETY, and since it's almost as depressing to read about as it is to write about, I'm gonna pass on this whole cattle

prod deal. It sounds like an Ozzie Osbourne story taken out of context. I'm interested in diaries, not dairies. Let's m0000ve on to other things...

CHERNOFF PD AT WNEW-FM "I had hoped I would get the job," says rew

WNEW/NYC PD Mark Chernoff, "but I knew they were talking to a tremendous amount of qualified

people. One of them even sent in a video presentation." Chernoff got the word he had been promoted from

MD to PD Friday (1/30) morning. He was told by WNEW Operations Manager-for-life Scott Muni.

The thought that ran through my mind was "growing up listening to WNEW...and here I am the program director!" God, what a country we live In. America. Without

the "k". "We have mutual respect for each other," says

Mark. "Growing up listening to Scott and Dave Herman, I learned alot about AOR from listening to them. They listen to me, I listen to them, and we adjust to each other. Lots of times, our tastes coincide. I respect them and they respect me." Where is the next place WNEW has to go? "Coming Into our twentieth year as America's nost

listened to AOR station, we are the major force in the marketplace, and we Intend to stay just that," says Mark. "As we move Into the late 80s and early 90s, we will continue to grow. We have a history anc we have a future. My job will be to put those two

together." Mark will continue to handle the music.

BYE BYE JOHNNY We were sad when we tuned in to hear Howard

Stern say his nationally syndicated Saturday show was history burgers.

    Saturday's Child

"After six months, we've decided to discontinue production," says Carol Strauss at DIR. "The show just was not profitable. It was a very, very expensive show for us to produce. We had to rent studios large enough to accommodate an audience, and the show took huge man-hours to book and produce. Unfortunately, it just didn't generate enough income. We wound up saying 'why are we doing this?" Astonishing when you consider that Stern brought

up daypart ratings as much as four times in nearly all of the show's markets. The show picking up stations and was close to having 100 markets.

Industry observers agree the show's inability to draw national advertisers was the key in DIR folding its tent. Howard's hysterical, but controversial, act

made the "nationals" queasy. Add the recent FCC inquiry into his local NY and PhiIly shows and

national sponsors wouldn't touch him with a ten foot prod.

Stern gets around this problem on his weekday show because of gaggle of eager local advertisers, who reportedly give up to $1500 per minute on his K-Rock show. But a national show requires national sponsors. So Howard and DIR part compeny on friendly terms. The last show will be--you guessed it--Valentine's Day, Feb. 14. DIR is owned by Lorimar--the same folks who gave

us the Waltons. But if Howard puts together a TV deal, it'll probably be with Fox TV, not Lorimar, as reported elsewhere. Too bad. He'd have been great on DALLAS as a pork farmer. It's not 100 percent, but we've heard rumors DIR is

in the process of tying up an exclusive deal with David Bowie. Concerts, everything.

WILLIAMS AND PITTMAN As expected, former EMite Dick Williams has

Joined Bob Pittman in the launching of Quantum Music Incorporated, the new label Pittman is forming with partner MCA.

Williams assumes the title of Executive VP/GM QM' Music Division meaning he heads the label. He'll be based in Los Angeles.

LARRY BRUCE NAILS KXRX Larry Bruce Communications of LA has signed

KXRX/Seattle. "We are very excited to working with Steve West,

Paul Sullivan, and Shamrock Broadcasting. Shamrock embodies the best in broadcasting, committed to great radio, based on strategic principles. Seattle is a challenging market, and we look forward to assisting in the success of KXRX," says Larry. Besides, it rains a lot there. Larry will have an

excuse to wear that trick raincoat he's always in. "It's already a bloodbath because between KXRX

and KISW there's only half a staff," notes Bruce. "KXRX has cleaned their clock already: They've got the morning team, the afternoon show, the sales manage', the chief engineer, and, for all I know the custodian. It's gonna be the best war in radio, at least for the first six months."

THE MIDDAY CRUISE AT WCKG Chicago legend Mitch Michaels is the latest

addition to the WCKG airstaff, moving over from his utility gig at the Loop.

Michaels has worked at WHFS, WGAR, WNCR, WLYT, WMMS, WGLD, WXRT, WDAI, WXRT, WDAI, WKQX, WLUP (PD, too.), WBBM-FM, WLUP, and now, WCKG, a fact that prods him to crack that his new positioning statement would be "The saddletramp of the 60s, 70s, and 80s." "(PD Tim) Kelly's the reason I'm here," says Mitch.

"I see parallels between Tim's plan and what (Bob) Pittman did at WKQX ten years ago. It's the same feeling."

Fresh from a strong, but failed attempt to retain his crown at the Bulls' annual celebrity slam-dunk contest (he was runner-up to guy who did full "turnaround 360" jam), Michaels figured he "would go high in next year's draft" and that by then he "could pass the urine test." "In putting this radio station together," notes Kelly

"I need some heritage jocks, guys with ready-made

INDUSTRIAL NOISE value in the marketplace. I've got to anchor the station more in Chicago than it has been. It was a logical move." Mitch indicated that his commercial acting career

would continue, as would his voice-over business. "It's not a matter of chasing the Loop," says Tim,

commenting on the direction of the station. "We have goals set and we're going to try to be the best possible album rock station we can be. We are leaning to Classic Rock right now, and will continue to. I'm not going head-to-head with anybody. I put blinders on and just run." How is morning man John Fisher sounding? "I like Johnny. I tried to hire him in LA," volunteers

Tim. So you're not chasing (JC) Corcoran anymore? "No. We just couldn't come to terms. We hit our

deadline and moved on," adds Kelly. "Right now, i just want to get this place put

together. This is not gonna be one of those wham-bam thank you, ma'am fast-grow situations. But we're getting there."

    GIMME TWO STEPS

The Bill Wise Interview Mr. CD speaks freely and without static or surface noise.

Like aloi of us, Bill Wise started on the campus radio station. But he was smarter even then--he went to school in Daytona Beach when the rest of us were Cryogenic majors at Frigidaire U. Like alot of us, he had stints in CHR and Country before seeing the light

and becoming the WKLS/Atlanta Promotion Director in 1982. From there to WFBQ/Indy PD in 1983, and established it as the Rock of the Rustbelt. He went

back to Atlanta in April of '85 as PD of WKLS and proceeded to have three straight books in the Nine's. Named PD of Cox's WGTR/Miami late last year, he faces his stiffest challenge yet in WSHE.

Steve: I think we all want to know what was on your mind as you went went from Atlanta to Miami...

Bill: It was obviously pretty scary because SHE is the heritage radio station. But the thought was that we could come down and win. Shake things up. And I wanted the personal challenge. Beyond that, we had some special hooks to make our introduction even better.

    Steve: What were those hooks?

Bill: The all-compact disc stance. It helped us get into the market. Having SHE's former morning team out of the box was a big plus. We had a footing. With those

two hooks--the fun in the morning and the state of the art technology--we have felt we had a winning combination.

Steve: What's the difference between programming WKLS and WGTR?

Bill: You had to play it safe at WKLS. You're the dominant station is the market, you have lot to protect and you're very cautious. When you have a station like WGTR, that's brand new, a baby, you program it by the seat of your pants. You break all the rules--do anything--realizing that there's such a small amount of cume out there, you're just trying to get attention any way you can. We're more progressive here than at WKLS.

Steve: If you're cautious, you'll just do things that reinforce SHE's image.

    Bill: Right.

    Steve: Who are your heroes?

Bill: George Harris has to be one. I've watched him for years. he had the image of being the 'bad boy' of the industry--WYNF, etc.--but he's turned it into a really nice consultancy. And he had a hand in bringing up one of the best jocks in the country--the Bearman, when they were at WGRQ years ago--and

Bearman's turned out to be our afternoon guy and MD, thank you. Dave McNamee was my group PD at Gulf (WFBQ). His long top 40 experience was shared with me. He had great knowledge, which he passed along to me. I admire Dwight (Douglas). He has been there all along, through the success of WFBQ. WKLS. and now, WGTR. He knows more about this business than anybody.

Steve: You promote to your own cume very well. You recycle your dayparts admirably. How?

Bill: Basics. Cross-promotion is mandatory to good radio. A feature is always promoted in dayparts other than the one it runs. We always promote the morning show in other dayparts. We do what everyone else does.

Steve: Apparently, you do it better.

Bill: We've been fortunate in Atlanta and Indianpolis. We had really strong, funny morning shows. We were able to promote them in other dayparts. [Noisenote: This continues to be the critical strength of such stations as VVMMR: The fact the station has a large audience and uses it well. DeBella is well-known and a big deal, but he's also the beneficiary of other dayparts--and vice-versa.]

Steve: Is your produced sound an important part of recycling dayparts? Do you have a hot production director?

Bill: Absolutely. I had one of the best around in Steve Mitchell (Atlanta). Fifty percent of the success of WKLS was how Steve made the place sound. Promos are definitely the kind of thing that can set you apart from your competitor. And here, we have a great production guy, Scott Chapin, who use to work

at KFRC/SF. Scott has already made the station come alive.

Steve: Compare your produced sound to SHE's.

Bill: Well, they take a different approach than us. It's difficult to detail, but they do drop-ins, the kind that were popularized at KFOG. We don't do drop-ins, we highlight our sound and events. We try to get the listener excited about the station--what's coming up next, what new songs we're playing. We do a thing now called "Compact Disc Facts" that tells people what's going on in the world of CD. How CDs they're outselling everything else, how they're growing faster that color tv did when it was introduced.

Steve: Here's the big one: Does your CD stance limit you musically? What about new releases? (No record--but Bruce--comes with a ready-made CD.) What about music available only on 12-inches, the out-of-the-box stuff?

Bill: Yeah, Lou Gramm, case-in-point. But I think I can take your chart and safely say I have 35 or 36 of the first 40. We will get burned on some 12-inches, but we're not gonna sacrifice the sound and thrust of the radio station. I think we're in great shape.

Steve: What are some of your positioning statements on CD?

Bill: We use "the world's first all compact disc rock & roll station". Also, "all compact disc, all rock & roll".

  • il.. REPORT INDUSTRIAL NOISE Steve: Did you ever think of calling the station WCD instead of WGTR?

Bill: I didn't look through the FCC files to see if that was available. But this thing just emerged. The product availability was there the last couple of months. And suddenly it was "Hey, we can do this..." when everyone said we couldn't.

Steve: So, when coming form Atlanta, you didn't know that was one of the holes is the market that you were going climb in and spread...

Bill: We had it in our minds, but it was kind of a dream. We had been able to play off CD so much in Indy and Atlanta, but to do all CD? We didn't know if it would be possible...the growth of CDs made it possible.

Steve: Do you guys do any research?

Bill: We've done a series of focus groups and we have done some call-out, but at his point, it's been minimal. We've yet to get everything geared up. But it will be.

Steve: What do you look for in a DJ?

Bill: Someone with a really up presentation, with a mixture of AOR and something not unlike the top 40 DJs of the late 70s.

    Steve: Like Lanndecker at VVLS?

Bill: I'll go with that. Somebody with a good, up presentation but also someone who can communicate to the rock & roll audience. Somebody who knows every AOR band that ever existed, and that the lead player is the illegitimate son of the guy floating in the toilet in the Tidy Bowl commercial. That kind of stuff. Day-to-day type facts.

Steve: What do you look for in a morning show?

Bill: Quick, concise, and funny. And that doesn't necessarily mean that their jox themselves have to be that way. Two of the best in the country are Bob and Tom at WFBQ. They let the listeners be funny for them--whether they're calling in with characters or their own jokes.

Steve: Yeah, but that takes a while to establish with your audience and you're a ways away from having that in Miami.

Bill: Even when they weren't fixtures, it worked. The first year and a half we were there, that's how they won over the audience: They let the audience be the funny people.

Steve: Still, that doesn't mean it doesn't take time. Nobody in Letterman's studio audience laughed at a thing he did for that first year; people weren't used to his sense of humor.

    Bill: You're right.

I Steve: But you've got a readily accepted sense of humor in guys that have been in Miami...how long? (In case you forgot, one of the first things Wise did upon arrival was appropriate the SHE morning team.

The accusations of surveillance alone would amaze even certain Langley, Virginians--NOISE)

Bill: (Skip Herman and Jim McBean) were together as a team almost four years and Skip Herman's been in the market almost eight years.

Steve: I'll ask the obvious next question. Were they worth the hassle? The detectives? The court date?

Bill: (Laughter.) One hundred percent. They are going on the air February 16th. It'll get into court sometime in March or early April. By the time that happens, I think we'll all have forgotten why it happened.

Steve: Believe me--they don't forget. Are there still people going in and out of the mysterious building with mirrored windows across the street?

Bill: (Laughing) Probably...we keep our eyes on 'em every day. It's Miami Vice all the way...

Steve: What do you look for in support staff?

Bill: I want people who won't take "no" for an answer. Especially when it comes your promotion director talking to people out on the street and getting the right promotion. And people who have a great attitude inn the building. People who love to be a part of the station...

Steve: Do giveaways work in 1987?

Bill: We think they do. Especially on the weekends, when people seem to be very active on the phones, we try to a package together for them. The key is: It's got to be something worthwhile.

Steve: Do they work as a quarter-hour game?

    Bill: I don't think so.

Steve: How a about he negative end of giveaways? The clutter. The disinterest? Is it almost a positioning statement to say you DON'T giveaway shit? "The Giveaway-Free Radio Station"?

Bill: Boy, they'll call me on that one. Oh no! That'll be the one in bold print...

Steve: This whole thing's done in bold. Just look at it. How do you approach a week?

Bill: Head first. Monday is key. We do music and set up the promotions on Monday. It seems that from those first meetings on Monday and leaving to go home on Friday, about 2000 things happen. That's radio, I guess. You gotta be ready for any new promotional idea that might come along. I try to set myself up during the week so I'm available, promotionally and musically, so that the station can be right on the cutting edge of something when it needs to be. Too many stations, you've gotta wait until you sit down and have e a meeting and discuss it. By then, you've lost the immediacy...

Steve: And radio is the immediate medium...

    Bill: Yeah. So we're ready.

Steve: What kind of outside promotion do you guys do?

Bill: We're just getting into billboards and TV...and we're the official station of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. About a million people go through it in three days. We're the first station ever to sponsor it.

Steve: You've got a really good track record. You're squeaky clean. Not even one firing. How do you stay one step ahead of the sheriff?

Bill: Not the sheriff...you've got to stay one step ahead of the GM. (Laughter.) And about two steps ahead of the Sales Manager. Be ready for anything. "Anything" happens in this business. Alot.

Steve: What do you see in the future of AOR?

Bill: I gotta think the pendulum's gonna swing the other way and we'll get into new music more. That's probably where we're gonna be next. We'll be discovering new artists after our present Classic phase. There'll be a lot of excitement on AOR because we'll breaking new bands. We have in the last few years, even though we've been accused of not breaking acts. But we'll break even more. it'll be more fun and we won't be as stale.

Steve: Will we be playing new stuff because the Classic phase going to cook our gold libraries?

Bill: I don't think that's gonna happen as much as there's gonna be some terrific new stuff out there to deal with. And when you look for space for it, it'll wind out taking a slot in the sequence where the gold used to be. You'll play less and less gold per hour. Let's get on to it.

    PICK

ANDY WHITE "RAVE ON ANDY WHITE" (MCA) Ok, back to basics. This Lp arrived quietly but has programmers humming to songs and stories about real people, dreams and disappointments. You'll love the imagery, but moreover, Andy's delivery is captivating in "Soldier's Sash", and his surrender is sweet in "Vision Of You". It's an album for radio folks and "folkies" alike, and he rocks--with heartfelt lyrics and strings of protest. Try "Rembrandt Hat" on for size.

    Also New...

MOJO NIXON "GET OUT OF MY WAY" (ENIGMA) We're talking request action here. Just sample the goods from this collection of greatest twisted hits and the caffeine will kick in.... "Mojo Nixon has those phones ringing for 'Burn Down The Malls" says Duane Sherman, WTOS. When's the last time you heard a tune like "Jesus At McDonald's"?

SQUIRREL BAIT "SKAG HEAVEN" (HOMESTEAD) And now for a somewhat different blanket of of sound, from a band who take no-pop shots. "Skag Heaven" contains some killer filler--harsh but confident songs that make you sweat. "Too Close To The Fire" demonstrates guitar graffiti in prime form, so bite a bullet and throw it on an during your next alternative fling.

WARD BROS. "MADNESS OF IT ALL" (A&M) When dealt a good hand, play it, as in the case of this timely project. Start with "Cross That Bridge", and find a brilliant number, with an almighty hook poised for instant response.... Dave Kane, WCMF says "One listen demands another, and before you know it you're stuck on the rest of the album. From the first notes on side one, It's apparent the Ward Bros. have talent."

    AIRPLAY ANALYSIS: Chartstars

PSYCHEDELIC FURS "HEARTBREAK BEAT" (COLUMBIA) It's fitting to start with #1, and because of the new Tracks chart, here we are. 18 more adds this week and we've got 70 on, single-handed. The album ships soon, so for now let's witness the tremendous gains on "Heartbreak Beat".... "1987 already looks bright for breaking new bands and no one is more deserving than the Furs", says WBLM's Robin Mathieu, "Heartbreak Beat' shows major crossover potential but I have a feeling that AOR can own this one in the end." Now at 5* overall airplay.

STRANGLERS "DREAMTIME" (EPIC) As interest builds weekly on an act previously thought to be strictly "alternative", I recall that sentiment when Love & Rockets were first introduced to the format. Well, get ready for a repeat performance with "Always The Sun"-- Now in Power and Heavy at KGRQ, KABL, KTAO, KTCL, WFNX, WOXY, WRAS, VVTOS, WXXP and KEYX. If you're still having doubts, then try this: Spin it once on the air and then try to take it off! Psst...it's on CD.

MISSION U.K. "WASTELAND" (POLYGRAM) As the album ships, we can see you're gearing up for more tracks--the 12" claims our biggest airplay move this week, 43-27*. Five more adds arrive at KRQU,

IA LTERNATIVE WBCN, WGTU, WTOS and KROQ for a 15 station total

so far. It's early, but don't wait on depth tracks when the Lp hits--check out "Sacrilege" or "And The Dance Goes On".

C.S. ANGELS "CHASING SHADOWS" (ISLAND) The highest #32 debut is crystal clear. There is airtime to be well spent with "The Cutting Edge" new at 13 including KEYX, KKBR, KRQU, KTAO, WDHA, WNDY, WTOS, KRIX, KSTM and WVVV.

LOS LOBOS "BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON" (SLASH/WB) Seizing the #1 Airplay spot for week 2, it doesn't show signs of budging, and that Shakes me just fine. Let's name names and call calls: 142 stations now surround the single with across the board mentions on the alternative front.... Headed Top 10 in the Hard Hundred? Sure is, with a 14* this week. Other action within includes "Set Me Free" and "Is That All...", but check out a sleeper--"This Mess We're In" is far from a snooze.

CONCRETE BLONDE (I.R.S.) Talk about joy of movement, tune into the 10 position jump to 14*, thanks to new action for "True" at 16 Including WMOD, KORX, WBLM, WLLZ, WLUP, KROQ and KZEL.... Robin Mathieu, WBLM replies "An exciting debut album...'True' is a very hip, accessible song that introduces them to your listeners." Duane Sherman, WTOS says "No doubt, we're looking at a major band for the 80's."

CHINA CRISIS "WHAT PRICE PARADISE" (A&M) Another bullet deluxe goes out with new action at WOXY, WRAS, KFMH, WMDK, WEQX, WMOD, KFMH, KKBR, WMRY, WRKI and KLPX. Add? Turn to "Arizona Sky" when you say that. It's too smooth to lose, and with a 16* the crisis continues.

PSEUDO ECHO "LOVE AN ADVENTURE" (RCA) This week, 11 new stations are "Living In A Dream", while the Lp arrives en masse.... Alison Stewart, WBRU says it's "such a collage of sound that it intrigues even the most conservative listener".... Lex Staley, WFYV says "It looks like they finally met with acceptance." The 27-22* moves is highlighted by airplay at WXXP, KEYX, KFMH, KORX, KROQ, KRQU, KSTM, WBCN, WMRY, KBCO, KTCL and WRAS.

THREE O'CLOCK "EVER AFTER" (IRS) In case you still haven't uncovered the purest pop

album on this chart, do it now along with KEYX, WRAS, KKBR, KTCL, WNDY, WTOS, WFNX, KTCL, WMOD, WGTU, WOXY, WMDK and more. "Suzie's On Ball Now" is the track that sheds the most light on a move to 37*.

CROWDED HOUSE (CAPITOL) It's with great pleasure that I welcome this Lp to the chart for the first time! From the Lp which sizzled on the home turntable during Summer '86, I wouldn't mind it again this year. "Don't Dream It's Over" IS an out and out smash, so take heed to the 16 new adds this week including KOME, KRQR, WEGR, WONE, WLNZ, WGTR, WGIR, KZEW and WBAB. An upward move on this debut is one to be part of.

SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES "WHEELS ON FIRE" (GEFFEN) It's new at 47* with action at KJET, WFNX, KEYX, KFMH, KKBR, KTCL, WHFS, WOXY, KROQ, WRAS, WHTG, KABL and KEYX where Jonathan Rosen says "It's THE most commercial song they've done. A fast paced sultry kinda song that will do very well." What else can I say besides, send it my way?

HIPSWAY "THE HONEYTHIEF" (COLUMBIA) We're tracking 34 now on including KJET, KRQU, WMOD, KABL, KTCL, KORX, WEQX, WHFS, WMRY, WTOS, KBCO, WGTU, and KABL where Ken Ornberg reveals "Being more guitar rock oriented, I'm usually slower to pick up on dance material, but this one caught me right away."

HUSKER DU "WAREHOUSE: SONGS AND STORIES" (WB) The Lp takes the 29 spot this week due to early believers in the form of WMAD, WHTG, KEYX, WHFS, KFMH, KJET, WMOD, WNDY, KQRS!, CFNY, WEQX and KABL where Ken Ornberg again donates more buzz, "Husker Du is now Top 5 requests. We're on many tracks but 'Could You Be The One' Is stirring the phones right now. It's a great song. The lyrics are memorable and you'll like it instantly."

PETER HIMMELMAN "THIS FATHER'S DAY" (ISLAND) No doubt, this is one to watch and enjoy. A 50* debut this week brings us to Patty Martin at KMBY, "I love the Peter Himmelman record! Great adult appeal." We're sure you'll find his approach to the liking--and "11th Confession" is garnering top honors off the Lp. It's at KJET, WNDY, WMDK, KFMH, KABL, WGTU, KSTM, WVVV, WHTG, KKBR, KFMU, KTAO, KVRE, WNGZ, KZEL and five more.

Europe, and then visit Zimbabwe and the United States before British concert dates in April. HUGH MASEKELA and his former wife MARIAM MAKEBA, will tour with SIMON. Only half of the songs on the tour will feature MASEKELA, MAKEBA, and a South African vocal group called LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO. It will give MASEKELA a chance to perform his new song, "Nelson Mandela, Bring Him Back Home." MASEKELA, says there will be "everything from super-traditional music to ballads as modern as you can get," and the finale will be "Nkosi Sikeleli Afrika," which has become the national anthem of the African National Congress. The European dates may be picketed by Anti-Apartheid Movement supporters. The British AAM contends that SIMON broke the 1980 United Nations Cultural Boycott of South Africa by recording there, and has broken the boycott again by bringing black performers out of the country to work. The AAM note that the ANC in Lusaka sent a telex to their office in Sweden, which supports "boycott action" against the tour, and alleges that SIMON has "singularly done more harm in flouting the cultural boycott." MASEKELA still defends SIMON'S recording in South Africa and his tour plans, noting that SIMON, whom he has known since 1964, has brought together musicians who had not been able to meet until now. "South African music has been in limbo because of apartheid. Exile and the laws have parted us and caused a lack of growth. This is our music and our country. Who are people in London to tell us what our movements should be, and how we should get together. If they want to help, they should pressurize European governments, not mess with the musicians," MASEKELA says. There will be a live album from SIMON'S tour, and MASEKELA has just signed a new recording contract and should have his own album out to coincide with the tour. After the SIMON tour, MASEKELA plans his own world tour with a group of South African stars. In addition, LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO also have a recording contract with Warner Brothers, and SIMON has produced their new album.

SQUEEZE keyboardist JOOLS HOLLAND has been suspended from his job as a host of the British television program, "The Tube," because of his use of a four-letter word (fuck) during a recent live promo for the program. He apologized for the "slip-up" when the program aired later that day. The television production firm says it "takes a most serious view of what has happened," and it won't let Holland appear on any of its programs until March 6.

The PSYCHEDELIC FURS say they won't be able to appear as part of the International AIDS Day Concerts. The band's manager says the group was already committed to European dates when the

PET SHOP BOYS, PAUL YOUNG and ALISON MOYET say their schedules won't allow them to perform.

The GEORGIA SATELLITES are tentatively scheduled to tour with REO SPEEDVVAGON once BOB SEGER completes his current tour.

PATSY KENS1T, who appeared in "Absolute Beginners," says she'll appear nude in her next movie, "Priceless Beauty." "It's the furthest part I could get away from "Absolute Beginners," she says adding that she asked herself whether the nudity was necessary for the film. "Unnecessary nudity is boring and a turnoff. I wondered if it was going to harm me in the long run. But I came to the conclusion if it shot well it can be very beautiful," KENSIT says.

JIMMY JAM HARRIS and TERRY LEWIS plan to release their own album, called "The Secret." The LP will be recorded with various guests who are as yet unnamed.... JANET JACKSON may be involved in a film that THE TIME are planning in conjunction with their upcoming reunion album and tour.

If Iranian-born millionaire MICHAEL ARMENIAN has his way, London's Wembley Stadium will soon play host to some of the world's biggest names as part of a huge global rock festival to promote international unity. He plans to form a British supergroup for the occasion that would include KEITH RICHARDS of the ROLLING STONES. MARK KNOPFLER of DIRE STRAITS, PHIL COLLINS, the three surviving BEATLES, and BRYAN FERRY. It's called the One World Festival, and it's scheduled for July 11. It will involve a 24-hour satellite link to beam performances to television stations all over the planet, including QUEEN in Moscow, SADE or CLIFF RICHARD in China and U2 in Managua. Proceeds from the extravaganza will all go to children's charities.

DREAMS SO REAL, whose "Everywhere Girl" was produced by REM's PETER BUCK, are one of eight bands featured in a film about the Athens music scene called "Athens Inside/Out." BARRY MARLER says that being based in Athens has its advantages as well as its drawbacks. "Every now and then, we'll encounter a bit of bitterness, because people think "oh, here are these guys trying to capitalize on REM'S success. That way, they can directly hit at REM." MARLER admits to liking REM "a lot,' but adds "I wouldn't be doing this if I thought we couldn't stand on our own six feet. Obviously, we're closer to REM than we are to DEEP PURPLE. We're in the same ballpark, but there are a lot more people out there who sound more like REM than we do and aren't even produced by Peter Buck."

The soundtrack to "Athens Inside/Out" is just being released, and the film will gradually open across the country beginning in late February and continuing through late April. The LP features two tracks from REM including their cover version of the EVERLY BROTHERS' "All I Have To Do Is Dream," as well as cuts from LOVE TRACTOR, PYLON and the KILKENNY CATS. The first single from the soundtrack will be "Na Na Na Na Na" from the SQUALLS.

The Phillips auction house in London says that a grey suit with a black velvet collar that belonged to PAUL MCCARTNEY has been sold at auction for $3,000 to a private collector. The suit was made for about $135

over 20 years ago, and was worn by MCCARTNEY on stage.

IRS records has a new label called the Primitive Man Recording Company (PMRC). The first three signings on the new label are THE BEARS featuring ADRIAN BELEW, a Los Angeles band called THE BALANCING ACT, and New York band TYREZ TYREZ. The new label is being run by SAM GENNAWEY, who has operated a hip Orange County record store. The new label doesn't mean IRS will loose interest in signing street-level bands, according to a spokesman.

GENESIS' current "Land Of Confusion" hit is a good example of group members "writing more directly now," according to guitarist MIKE RUTHERFORD. "I guess it's taken me 18 years to get around to writing a protest song," RUTHERFORD says. "I would never have written the lyrics so directly in the

early days. The message is very simple -- what a great world we've got here and what a mess we're making of it." GENESIS had to cancel a concert in Kansas City recently, because of problems with PHIL COLLINS' throat. "He had a cold and his voice went. There's nothing you could do."

RUTHERFORD says. "But we've canceled just two shows in the last eight years." GENESIS is hoping to tour China this year. but hopes of touring the Soviet Union don't seem to be materializing. "We've tried to get in there many times," he says. "But I

think we're a little too bizarre for them. Some of our lyrics still worry them."

MEN AT WORK are among the groups that will contribute to the soundtrack to the Australian film "Pandemonium."

IRON MAIDEN lead singer BRUCE DICKINSON has been released from a jail in Texas after being arrested on a warrant issued after a fight that

occurred near the stage at a MAIDEN show in March 1985. DICKINSON was released on a temporary $300 bond in connection with the assault

charge against him, which alleges that he hit one of the fight participants in the head with his microphone,

and then choked the man with the microphone cable. The band's manager took DICKINSON to the authorities after learning of the warrant.

Don't look for any more issues of "Boston Rock." The publication is blaming a lack of advertising and a depressed local music scene for its death after years. Publisher MIKE DREESE says "it wasn't looking practical as a business, and I simply don't have the time anymore." DREESE is co-owner of the Newbury Comics record stores. "I don't see the same excitement as when we started, when you could see great bands like GANG OF FOUR and THE DEAD KENNEDYS at the Rat. The hard core audience is still there but I don't see the young kids getting into it. We were relying on independent record labels and nightclubs for our advertising, but lately there isn't much to advertise," DREESE says. "There needs to be a new scene, new music and a new look," says editor BILLIE BEST.

And now, the latest music news LIVE FROM LONDON, courtesy of CFNY and our exclusive reporter, LEE CARTER. Lee can be heard on CFNY's "Sunday Music Magazine" program and on "Live From London" aired Wednesday evenings.

There are fresh reports concerning the 'One World' festival, mentioned previously in this column. The event is scheduled for 11th July, with hope of simultaneous concerts all over the world - 'Live Aid" style. It's now been revealed that the organizers of the even have approached the three surviving BEATLES - PAUL MCCARTNEY, GEORGE HARRISON, and RINGO STARR - and asked them to appear in a supergroup together that would also feature KEITH RICHARDS, MARK KNOPFLER, PHIL COLLINS, and BRYAN FERRY. Some of the other hot rumours are that QUEEN will perform live from Moscow and SADE from the Great Wall of China! One however must

show a certain amount of skepticism with regards to actually linking all these places together; it's a project that sounds many times more ambitious than Live Aid. The proceeds will go to various organisations for children in need like 'Save the Children' and the festival has the official backing of the Archbishop of Canterbury - the head of the Church Of England.

THE CURE are angry and upset over a controversy in The United States, following the U.S. release of their greatest hits LP, 'Standing On A Beach'. The LP includes the group's single 'Killing An Arab', a U.K. top ten hit in 1979. The lyrics are seen from the point of view of an insecure racist and has always been regarded here as an anti-racist record ord, but some American dee jays have been using the record as an anti-arab anthem to appeal to a post-Libya jingoistic mood. THE CURE have therefore offered to stage a major concert in the USA during the summer, the proceeds of which will be divided equally between American and Lebanese orphanages. Their lead singer, Robert Smith, has also requested that the song be withdrawn from all radio play, while Elektra Records are attaching a sticker to all future copies which reads: "The song 'Killing An Arab' has absolutely no racist overtones. It is a song that decries the existence of all prejudice and consequent violence. THE CURE condemn its use in furthering anti-arab feeling.

SIMPLY RED'S new single 'The Right Thing' is out 2nd February in the U.K. and the 12" contains two more tracks, 'There's A Light' and an old Cole Porter number 'Every Time We Say Goodbye'. The LP to follow in March is called 'Men and Women'.

BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE are back with a brand new single out 9th February in Great Britain, 'V Thirteen'. The A-side was recorded in London, while the flip 'Hollywood Boulevard' was recorded in New York.

Virgin have quickly snapped up AGE OF CHANCE, (previously on the indie Fon label.) purely on the strength of their single, a rock cover of Prince's 'Kiss' (a wonderful record by the way, particularly the 7"). Their new label are wasting no time in releasing new material in days here. A new EP will contain three songs of their own, another version of 'Kiss' and their own rendition of the TRAMPP'S 'Disco Inferno'. Sounds suitably irreverent!

Last September, a band of called WESTWORLD, a pretty American girl living in London and two guys, one from London and the other from Wales, privately pressed up 500 copies of their song, 'Sonic Boom Boy' and did something bands don't normally do - they gave them out free to anyone who was passing. Word got around and the rock TV show 'The Tube' stepped forward, made a video for them, aired it on the show and now WESTWORLD have a great record deal. And 'Sonic Boom Boy' is a great record. It has all the vitality and energy of a classic CLASH record in their most produced period, but it also has a slight American touch, not unlike the PRETENDERS when they started. I'll be very suprised if you don't hear a lot more of WESTWORLD.

    THE

    HARD REPORT

JULIAN COPE was pretty splendid last Saturday at the Westminster Central Hall in London, right in the shadow of Big Ben and The Houses of Parliament. I was struck by how young his audience were, originally suspecting that there might be a few old TEARDROP EXPLODES fans crawling out of the woodwork (but they've evidently traded in New Wave for New Age CDs). Yet this very very youthful crowd did know a lot of TEARDROPS material, which COPE played a fair smattering of. JULIAN leapt, pouted, slinked, about like a serpent, actually fell off the stage at one point, got extremely kinky with his extraordinary microphone stand and provided us with an absolutely blistering set of songs, old and new. The man oozed sex in a fashion that PRINCE would admire. His new band are incredible professional and tight, and I have no doubt he is going to be very big

in '87 and well deserved it is too.

COCTEAU TWINS and THIS MORTAL COIL FANS are up in arms at the moment (TMC was The COCTEAU'S previous incarnation). Their 'Song To The Siren' has been used here in the U.K. as a TV commercial advertising Sunshine holidays. Not a great image for the country's favourite artschool band - as 'Melody Maker' noted this week: 'Song To The Siren', a private moment that meant so much to so many people has been tied down and will never be

the same again." But it turns out the holiday company did obtain the song by slightly devious means. The outfit and their label, 440, had given a firm thumbs down to the ad. But the agency acquired the tune from an old ex-member of THIS MORTAL COIL, LOUISE RUDETSKY, and re-recorded it with her. instead of LIZ FRAZER, the original singer.

I'm reliably informed by SWISS SPIES that DAVID BOWIE walked into a disco at a posh ski resort and invited the dee jay to put a cut from his newly recorded LP on the turntable. As soon as it came on, everyone vacated the dancefloor! Oh dear.

    how embarrassing!

As rumoured, Virgin Records have officially signed STEVE WINWOOD, ending his 20 year association with Island that began with TRAFFIC. Not known previously however is that his deal is worldwide and not just the States. He is no doubt one of the first of many name acts to be lured to Virgin in the next few months, subsequent to their big share flotation in the U.K. to fund the expansion of their American operation.

IN BRIEF: BOB GELDOF'S autobiography 'Is That It' has now been added to the official reading lists in British schools for the Advanced Level Examination, which is the equivalent of the last two years of High School...By climbing the British Charts this week, IGGY POP'S 'Real Wild Child' will become his first top twenty single on either side of the Atlantic... The leading record company presidents in the U.K. this week openly attacked the BBC'S coverage of rock and pop music on television. The big chart show, 'Top of the Pops' was cut back from 45 minutes to 30 last year. Now their leading progressive show 'The W
