• The most apparent benefit of LED is the energy saving either from cost of power or generation provision for alternative equipment. The average energy saving is around 60% which will represent a monthly saving on energy costs or availability of energy for alternative equipment, drives and production facilities to offshore platforms.

• Reduction of maintenance to lighting circuits due to the guarantee of life of the LED tube and extended period for inspection.

• Reduction in fuel costs for reduced generation demand.

• Power factor correction in the system network which will improve the efficiency of the generated power by reducing the reactive effect of the original fluorescent fittings.

• Distribution board & circuit review and selection

• Methodology for installation

• Photo set of retrofitted fitting offshore installed

From Electrical TA review of LMD-5-1 and first circuit selection of LP1-1R, labels were created with CM code for future inspection (data reader facility) and Fa6 cap type (monopin) tubes were procured and delivered offshore for installation.

When all materials were offshore the TA travelled to Dunlin (February 2015) and requested a permit to retrofit the selected monopin fittings in the circuit. The method statement was followed to completion and a 63.8% current reduction was recorded on the circuit. Labels were fitted as instructed and the internal microswitch was tested successfully when de-isolated.

The core crew shift electrical technicians were given an full demonstration of the retrofit procedure and reviewed the supplied drawings for both tube cap types for future maintenance and retrofit activities.

Installation procedure:-

• Measure load current reading of selected circuit with calibrated hand held instrument and record.

• Isolate selected circuit to be retrofitted prior to work start and prove circuit dead.

• Open fitting to remove protective bowl/cover by required method using correct tools. Lay safely for replacement on completion.

• Remove fluorescent tubes from end caps and discard correctly for waste disposal as per current regulations.

• Remove covers and retaining screws from fitting gear tray. Support/suspend gear tray to expose all terminals and wiring.

• From the wiring diagram in Fig. 1 the outgoing cables from the protection micro-switch (cable (3) from L1 – live supply and cable (4) N – Neutral) are to be cut 30mm from the Ballast connections and connected to cables (7) & (8) then (5) & (6) respectively. The method for connection shall be via crimped straight through connectors (Ellpress type).

• From the wiring diagram Fig. 2 the final connections are illustrated as final circuits.

• The cables from the Ballast can then either be removed with the ballast or capped and left in the fitting.

• Reversal of steps 2, 3 & 4 will render the fitting as LED ready for de-isolation, testing of micro-switch operation and full illumination of fitting. Fit new identification label and new certification label to fitting. Ensure this covers the original certification code.

• When circuit complete and maintenance routines apply, the circuit should be zero rated in hours and dated for the new regime of LED maintenance test periods for the tube as per recommendation from manufacturer.

• De-isolate the selected circuit to energize all fittings.

• Measure new LED load current reading of circuit with calibrated hand held instrument and record.

• Complete the checklist and new identification label with inspection unique code programmed. This is used for future inspection records.

• On completion of documentation and energisation of circuit, test all fittings for micro-switch cut-off of supply to tubes operating the opening mechanism on each fitting. Record all.

Offshore Fa6 Retrofit Installed Photos

Following the method statement instructions, fittings were retrofitted and readings recorded to illustrate a 63% current reduction on the circuit. All tests were successfully completed in approximately 45 minutes per fitting. Photos below show the before and after condition along Distribution board identification.

Benefits and Comparisons

FLUORESCENT VALUES Current energy per 100 x 1200mm fluorescent fittings = 72W x 100 – 7200W or 7.2kW

Add Energy losses within the electronics and controls @ 19% = 1368W = new total 8.568kW

Maintenance of lighting at 2 yearly frequency – typical platform used Fairfield Dunlin Alpha in North Sea – 2 yearly maintenance could be extended to 6 yearly

Spares cost for bi-annual replacement and disposal of tubes for environmental safeguards

LED VALUES LED tubes x 2 per fluorescent fitting x 100 = 30.4W x 100 – 3040W or 3.04kW =saving of 5.528kW per 100 fittings

No internal losses of reactive energy

Maintenance – 6 yearly frequency on lighting circuits

Reduction on spares due to guarantee and savings on disposal methods.

Applications and Opportunities

Industries that can benefit from the LED energy saving benefits include all offshore installations, in all Zone 2 areas, all onshore commercial, industrial, petrochemical, distilleries and pharmaceutical buildings.

The Zone 1 driver is in final design for certification approval and should be available for final testing in Q2, 2015.

The range of products allows the individual companies to re-fit all office, storage, facilities and external areas with controlled LED lighting systems to improve the carbon footprint of their business and realise a Return On Investment (ROI) in under 24 months from installation.
