They entered the harbor in late June and on July 2 established headquarters on Staten Island. Ten days later, Admiral Lord Richard Howe arrived with additional forces. Over a period of several weeks the British army grew to about 32,000 men, including more than 8,000 mercenaries hired for service in America.

an effective blockade because they were trying to keep ships

from entering or leaving American harbors. The Privateers were

very helpful in the war at sea. A privateer is a Privately owned

merchant ship outfitted with different weapons. They were

helpful because there goal was to capture enemy merchant

ships and cargo. John Paul became a Patriot hero in war at sea.

He became a patriot because he won his first successes raiding

British Ports.
