What is a Fluid?
A fluid is anything that has no fixed shape and can flow. Usually
it is a liquid or a gas.
What is a Fluid?
Each group will be assigned a type of fluid. Your job is to come up with as many examples as you can in two minutes.
You will be asked to share your examples with the class.

Fluids make it easier to move materials even if they are solids

Slurries: A mixture of water and a solid (like dirt and water) eg) Mining in the Oil Sands
Uses of Fluids
Syncrude originally used conveyer belts to move the oils sand from the mine to the processing plant, but found it was way to expensive. It is now pumped to the plant by way of a slurry pipeline.

2) Fluids take the shape of their containers. Many solid materials are originally prepared as fluids.

Glass, steel and concrete are examples of where the solids are processed as liquids to shape them easier, so that when they cool or dry as a solid they are in the solid form that they should be.

Viscosity is resistance to flow. It is determined by a
fluids internal resistance or friction that keeps it from flowing.
The greater the friction the higher the viscosity, the slower it will move.
The lower the friction the lower the viscosity the faster it will go.

Cleaning products can have their viscosity adjusted by changing the temperature…to remove bubble gum from shoe or carpet lower the temperature. Use an ice cube to make the bubble gum more viscous, making it easier to remove.
