Socialtext Success Stories

"We knew we needed a whole new kind of Intranet. Instead of a traditional, rigid document repository, we needed a tool that would enable consultants and researchers to interact with each other flexibly. Most importantly, it had to be incredibly easy to use—both to contribute and to find what you need at a moment’s notice."

"We had pretty much 100% unanimous adoption from the researchers within a month. They took to it like gangbusters. They wholeheartedly adopted it. The level of enthusiasm around Socialtext was stunning."

Bill Hopkins, Director of Operations, Egon Zehnder International

“Once people saw what they could do with Socialtext, each business unit started their own social software revolution.”

Steve Brewer, Customer Connection Mgr. & Systems Integration, FONA Int.

The key decisions Not making an existing intranet act social – use the window of

opportunity and take the full advantage of Enterprise 2.0. Launching the principle – not the new intranet.

The challenges Raise the percentage of contributors from 15% - this is commonly

done with viral marketing, calling to interact and the oldest medicine in the world - endurance.

The surprises The management approach through the Blog-O – a perfect way of

creating a close relationship regardless of the title on your business card, their ear to the ground.

Success criteria: Individual values, Flexibility & Ease of Use Speed and flexibility

Cook reports that from his experiences “employees are much more forgiving if they get a solution with a few rough edges, if they get it quickly and it does the job.”

Ease of use Enterprise Social Software implementations should be easy to use, in a way that

can be “launched virally using word of mouth without a complex communication and training programme.”

Demand driven In contrast to often existing top-down approaches for the procurement and

deployment of new software solutions for the company, successful introductions can be built to respond to specific requests from end users, without considering just mere experiments. This can of course pose new challenges for traditional organizational IT departments and strategies for procurements, implementation and sustainable management of solutions.

Individual value Judging from his case analyses, Cook reports that “one of the key factors in

achieving success is the fact that the value to be created to the individual employee was put first and foremost in the design of each system. Organizational value came second and in fact only came at all as a results of putting employees first.” Cook, Niall (2008) Enterprise 2.0. How social software will change the future

of work. Gower Publishing: Burlington.
