Everyone is a ci-zen of the world. At some level we should all be its stewards with accountability toward preserving its environment. One component of that is the preserva-on of dark skies or the preven-on of light pollu-on. The preserva-on of dark skies is important for many reasons including astronomy, energy conserva-on, cost, wildlife and even human health. Through the Dark Skies Ranger Program, students learn about the importance of dark skies and experience ac-vi-es that illustrate proper ligh-ng, light pollu-on’s eﬀects on wildlife and how to measure the darkness of your skies. A highlight of the program is the ci-zen science project, GLOBE at Night, which enlists the help of students and adults to collect data on the night sky brightness in their community and contribute to a worldwide database on light pollu-on. Dark Skies Ranger ac-vi-es are on‐line at www.globeatnight.org and www.darkskiesawareness.org/DarkSkiesRangers/, as well as on CD. Ac-vi-es come complete with learning objec-ves, standards, materials needed, prepara-on needed, background, lesson sequence, student worksheets, ques-ons, integra-on, assessments, extensions, teacher resources, etc. Training videos for the ac-vi-es and for how to par-cipate in GLOBE at Night will be available on the same websites during the fall of 2011. In 2012 there will be 4 GLOBE at Night campaigns. The ﬁrst campaign is January 14 – 23. The second campaign is February 12 – 21.
