Genetically engineered babies 'within two years' as scientists make breakthrough is the headline of the Daily Star. Designer jeans, designer bags, and even designer appliances. Now in a world of science we have designer babies. Within two years the all-knowing scientists will be able to cre-ate genetically engineered babies. When scientists discovered the human genome there was all sorts of hope. I have had my DNA analyzed and discovered my ethnic heritage (no surprises, I am fully Italian), found out what genetic diseases I am susceptible to and discovered that my ability to sense the flavor of soap in cilantro is genetically determined. Now the scientists who have replaced in effect the role of priests as ethical authorities in society will be able to determine the traits of our future children within two years. Already they can select the sex of a child but soon the eye color, skin tone, athletic abilities, etc. can be predetermined by the parent(s) who will then give birth to or have a child they did not conceive at least in the natural way. In fact it may happen that the child is not even theirs but derived from the spermatozoon and ovum of other people. When the scientists found that they could manipulate DNA, it was hoped that they could correct or modify the genes that causes genetic disorders such as albinism and cystic fibrosis. But now it may be used to create the superman. Prior to WWII, eugenics, the idea of a perfect human being, was very popular among Germans, British and Americans. The Germans, under Nazism brought it to new heights by declaring the Aryan race to be the supreme race and so the other races had to be either subordinate to the Aryan race or be annihilated as was being done to the Jews and the cog-nitive and physical genetic anomalies. In the film, Gattaca (1997), the main character Vincent is a God-child, that is he was conceived in the natural way whereas most children were genetically designed by a genetic counselor helping perspective parents design their children as if going to the car dealer and selecting the color. Of course those who are designed become the favored superior class. Those who are not are considered inferior. Vincent proves his natural abilities and beats out the genetically modified people. I predict with all confidence that this scenario will come to us in the future. Just for the sake of keeping up with the Joneses, parents will not want their children to be left behind and so will give into having their offspring designed with the perfect qualities and disease free. Those who are de-signed “perfectly” will laud it over those who are not and a superior race will be formed. Church teaching is clear on the value of human life, a gift from God. She teaches that

A child has the right to know his parents, A child has the right to be conceived in love, and A child has the right to grow up in a family with his father and mother.

To intentionally deny these rights is a violation of God’s mandate to man and woman to be fruitful and multiply. When a woman goes to a fertility clinic to have her ovum fertilized by an unknown man (IVF), she denies the child’s right to know his father. When a man has a child conceived in a woman who is not his wife (surrogacy), he denies his child the right to know his mother and grow up in a family with his natural parents. When a child is conceived by the work of a clinician (in vitro fertilization), the child is denied his right to be conceived in love. When an ovum

and spermatozoon are genetically manipulated to create a super child. again the child is denied a natural conception in love. Children are not clothes or a fine meal. We must never consider a child to be a commodity or a pet, something to be picked off of a shelf. Children are human beings and have rights. Children are gifts from God who need to be cherished and loved, not designed and bought. They are never to be manipulated, borrowed or disregarded because they are different. Sometimes it happens that children are not conceived in love (rape, one night stands, etc). Sometimes they do not know their father or mother because of premature death or abandonment. Sometimes they do not grow up in an intact family. None of these are ideal, but we do the best we can for the child by loving him and raising him well in the faith. But to deliberately and with full consent bring a child into this world without love, without regard to the child’s right to be conceived in love or know his father and mother and be raised in his natural fam-ily is a violation and therefore a sin. Catholics must shun these unnat-ural conceptions and genetic manipulations as detrimental to the child, to the family and to society. Just because we can does not mean we have the right. So let us all refrain from our grandiosity and our fears and rely on God who will provide for all our needs and fulfill every one of our righteous desires.

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the follow-ing of that impulse. —Henry Van Dyke

Making Those Funeral Arrangements Planning or even thinking about one’s own funeral is unpleas-ant and therefore something we tend to push far out of our minds. When the time finally comes it leaves the family stressed and overwhelmed by all the decisions they must make. You can relieve some of this stress for your loved ones by planning your Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial). Lynn Berhalter would like to assist you in choosing the Scriptures to be read at your funeral Mass according to the archdiocesan guidelines. She can also help you choose the hymns that will add to the solemni-ty of your Mass. This is simple to do and it helps fulfill your wishes and eases your family’s burden. Make an appointment to see Lynn at the rectory to get started. Your plans will be kept on file at Holy Trinity Church and may be amended anytime you wish. Planning ahead ensures your family that the readings and music you desired are carried out and they need not worry. It is a beautiful final gesture, a gift to those who grieve. Call 201-343-5170 now and make your ap-pointment.

Archdiocese of the Military On November 10 we were suppose to have a collection for the Archdiocese of the Military. This collection is taken every three years. Unfortunately the envelope company, DP Murphy, failed to include the envelope in the latest mailing. You should have received an envelope the week of November 10 instructing you to place your donation in the Sunday collection. If you have not bene able to do so, you can still place a donation this weekend. The military parishes operate on their own budget; nothing comes from the US Military other than the priest chaplains. Everything else is supported by the young men and women and their families. We all know how little the pay is for an enlistee.

The Giving Tree The tree is up ! If you would like to give, gifts must be returned, wrapped with the star attached, and placed under the tree by December 8. Thank you for your generosity.

Seeking Baptism? Want to be a Catholic?

Go and announce to my brothers that they must go into Galilee! there they will see me,….Go therefore and make disciples of all peoples baptizing them in the name of the Father of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Mark 28, 16-20

RCIA AND CATECHESIS The process by which adults (not baptized) enter the Church has come to be known as “RCIA”, which is short for “The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.” The RCIA is a process, not a program. It forms a community of inquirers and their sponsors by guiding them through the edu-cation, formation and ritualization of entrance into the Catholic community through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Con-firmation, & Eucharist). Those interested in learning about the Catholic faith come together on a weekly basis to learn about the scriptures and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, and at the same time, discover how the Holy Spirit is present in their lives. The RCIA process is designed for those adults who are not baptized. The primary focus of the RCIA is to form candidates in the ways of Christ with the goal of full initiation at the cele-bration of the Easter Vigil.

Baptized Protestant? Those who have been validly baptized in an ecclesial commu-nity will also will be invited to join the Catechetical Formation and will be received into full communion with the Catholic Church by a Profession of Faith and reception of the Sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

Orthodox Christian? Those who have been baptized in an Orthodox Church and wish to come into full communion with the Catholic Church, will be invited to join the Catechetical Formation and be re-ceived into the Church by a Profession of Faith at the Easter Vigil.

Baptized Catholic but not Confirmed? Those who are baptized Catholics but are not fully initiated & catechized are invited to Catechetical Formation and preparation in order to complete their Sacraments of Initiation (and marriage if need be) when the Bishop visits the parish. We are inviting adults for a short meeting in order to answer questions and concerns about Baptism, completion of your Sac-raments or on becoming a Catholic. Please invite any friends who want to get closer to God and may consider becoming a Catholic.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, December 12

at 6:00 PM Location: Convent (Pangborn Street)
