Wisdom of the Saints No, I’m not a saint; I’ve never performed the actions of a saint. I’m a very little soul upon whom God has bestowed graces; that’s what I am. What I say is the truth; you’ll see this in heav-en.

—St. Therese of Lisieux, said towards the end of her life It is better to err by excess of mercy than by excess of severity … Will you become a Saint? Be severe to youself but kind to others.

—St. John Chrysostom If being a saint consists in having no taste and a strong stomach, I admit I may be one.

—St. Peter Claver

SHARING GOD’S BLESSINGS (formally AAA)

This year your donation to the Annual Appeal will go to Semi-narian Education, Catholic Charites, Parishes in financial need, Catholic education, Youth Ministry, Priest Retirement and Cam-pus Ministry in our many colleges. We are all asked to give 10% of our blessings as a tithe. Usu-ally 5% to support the parish & 5% to your favorite charities. Perhaps you would like to support the Archdiocese in many of its charitable works by pledging to the Annual Appeal.

The 2018 Mass Book “He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not ex-pecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin” (2 Maccabees 12:43-46).

June 1 We’ll be accepting Mass Intentions for 2018 begin-ning June 1, 2017 at the rectory. Intentions may be offered for the dead to gain indulgences. You may offer Mass for de-ceased individuals or for families. No more than 3 Sunday Masses can be offered at this time. After July 1 you may offer more weekend Masses if they’re available. Intentions for Mass may also be offered for the living. One does not offer Mass for saints or the Blessed Mother since they are already in heaven.

Requiem Mass I will celebrate a Month’s Mind Mass for the repose of my fa-

ther, Joseph Prevosto, on May 22 at 7:30 PM. All are welcome. Repast to follow.

Jesus said: I am way, truth and life. This is a mouthful, but it expresses to us the full divini-

ty of Jesus. In our efforts to be more ecumenical and respectful of other religions, we have been tempted to accept that there are other ways to heaven. Yet that flies in the face of Jesus’ words: I am the way. Can there be other ways if Jesus is way? By this definite article it clearly implies there is no other way. When the Hebrews took the way out of Egypt they experienced free-dom from slavery, but when we take the way of Jesus, we go from sin to grace, from lies to truth, and from death to life. The way of Jesus leads to true freedom, freedom from the lies and pomp of Satan to the truth that is God, and when enlightened by the Christ we come to be free of the sting of death and so enjoy the blessedness of eternal life.

Christ Jesus is the truth. In him we find no guile, no duplicity, no error, no falsehood, no quackery, no pretense. Je-sus is the truth. He embodies all that is good, holy, pure, and divine. Many have denied this. Arius of the 3rd century denied it. Mohammed of the 7th century denied this. Joseph Smith (Mormon) of the 19th century confused this. The Jehovah’s Wit-nesses of the 20th century denied this. They have no claim on the truth since they have turned away from or misunderstood Jesus, our L and God. Many in the world of secularism have denied that Jesus is the truth. Thy have opted for science as their god, as their truth. Science is manmade truth based on facts, which fluctuate, and on human observations, which are limited and biased. Do not secularists have a creation story (big bang & evolution), a code of ethics/morals (environmentalism), and an apocalypse (asteroids or global warming). Many see in science today a new religion that cannot be contradicted and must be indoctrinated. While many of these scientific ideas are factual and even true they are not God! Ultimately and truthfully, we believe that Jesus is truth for through him all things were made and by him all are reconciled.

Finally Jesu is Life. We come to know that in Jesus we are saved from the ravages of sin and death. If we follow in his way and believe that he is sent from God we are saved. Our original destiny was to be with God and only through Jesus, the Son of God, is this accomplished. By his death he has destroyed our death and by his resurrection we too are raised to eternal life. Alleluia! he is truly risen.

Memorial Mass for Oscar Bradford June 20 at 12:10

When Oscar passed away he left behind a small family who lives a distance away. He had expressed to his daughter how lonely he was and how few friends he had so she did not plan a funeral Mass. This was far from the truth. Many of us appreciat-ed and loved Oscar. On June 20, I will celebrate a memorial mass for Oscar at 12:10 PM and then I will go to George Washington Cemetery in Paramus and bless his grave. Afterward I will take lunch. I invite anyone who cared for Oscar to join me.

(Juan 14:5).
