July Relentless 2-Day trip Wow. It was great to be back on a boat. I was thinking it has been about 2 1/2 years since my last trip on the Apollo, but I believe I went on a July tuna trip that summer. Anyway it has been a long time. After reading all the reports Tuesday night and Wednesday morning I was getting a little excited, everything was in the fish counts for the two day trips; Albacore, Yellowfin, Bluefin, Yellowtail, and Dorado. My anticipation of things to come was high! John, Shannon and Eric picked me up my house early Wednesday afternoon, we loaded the truck with all my stuff and we were on our way. After a quick drive to San Diego, we found a spot in the parking lot by Fisherman's Landing, and off to Pizza Nova for a nice pre-boarding lunch. By the time we ate lunch and arrived at the Relentless just about everyone was there getting ready for a 6:30 departure. So the rituals began; load the bags, find a bunk, put the rods in the rod holders, put on the reels, pull the line and check the drag. Everything was a go! Next up sign in, 2 manifests of course, pay for jackpot and 50/50 and await the captain’s arrival. Then the captain arrives, and we get on our way about 7:30. As we are getting big sardines and anchovies we get the boat briefing and bad news. The tuna have disappeared because all the beautiful warm weather dissipated the temperature breaks that were holding the fish and now we have "Generic" water. However we are still going to go where the fish were and look, they got to be somewhere around there. So off we go for about 130 miles southwest. Well needless to say Thursday was a great cruise in the Pacific Ocean. Good food, great friendships, nice naps, and last but not least I had a chance to catch up with everyone on the boat. That was really awesome! The end of the day Captain Rick headed in to shore to set us up for Kelp Paddy hopping on our way home Friday. That turned out to be incredible. He started out south of where the paddies have not been picked over which left us with a few really tremendous stops. I am not sure what happened on the first stop. My first cast turned into a massive birds nest. Everyone around me seemed to be hooked up and of course Eric could not stop laughing. John started giving me a hard time about 3 year old line, then Eric came by and asked if I forgot to put sardine water in my line, that one lasted all day with him coming over and demonstrating how to properly lubricate my line with a sardine. I think we need a demo at one of the meetings Eric. It was funny and original, I am still laughing at it as I am writing this, this is one to remember and it truly is all Eric. I am not sure what the counts were, however at the end of the day the deck was loaded with a lot of Yellowtail, some Dorado, and of course Shannon had to catch the only Yellowfin. All in all it was a great trip and shows the value of going on multi-day trips. Tough one day, however you always have at least a second chance. On a serious note. Keith Wolfe was on the trip with us. He is has got to be one of the strongest men I have ever met and also one of the nicest. Keith is battling Pancreatic cancer, for anyone who has fought the cancer battle or has or had a family member you know what this takes. Keith is so positive, hopeful and outgoing that I feel he is a role model and hero for everyone who will go through this. He is not letting the disease stop him from his passions, he went fishing with us, he is building a house in Tehachapi and he is pursuing his dreams. I am asking that everyone add Keith and his family to your prayers. If you belong to a prayer circle or church please have them add him and his family to their list. I can not possible know what it takes to fight the battle, however we all have been impacted by those we love, befriend and care for as we support and watch them fight. They need us for support, however we need them more for what we can learn about persistence, love of life and what it means to "Be."

As my dad would tell me every time we talked before he passed, "Everyday on the right side of the grass is a beautiful day."

It is great to be back.....

Jim Allen

Letter from the President

Hello fishin' friends: With the end of year fishing coming soon, we have enjoyed 2, not killer, but productive 2-day trips on the Relentless. A nice boat that we plan to fish next year with Steve Thompson as skipper. Our September trip on the Seabiscuit turned out to be great trip with everyone getting limits of fish. We have 2 more Seabiscuit trips left this year in October and November with lots of openings left. Talk to family and friends and try to fill these trips. Fishing is hot and bags and freezer are waiting to get filled with lots of fish. Have a good fall fishing season. Tight lines, Kevin. P.S. Don't know if you have talked to anyone about the last trip, but here's what I heard from Mark Brown. Mark took 1st (sheepshead 12 lbs) and 2nd (ling, unknown #) and Pamela got 3nd with Sheepshead, JP only, 3rd for club points was Dave D. Don't know what Dave caught. I am sure you can get all the info from Jerold. Talk to you soon. Kevin

July 09 Relentless 2 Day trip By Dennis Papp

Our trip aboard the Relentless left the docks at H & M Landing on Wednesday July 22. After a stop at the bait receiver, it was off to the fishing grounds. We were headed 140 miles Southwest of San Diego in search of albacore. The next morning we were greeted by overcast skies and calm seas. Good conditions didn’t help the fishing much. By nightfall our count was goose egg, zero, zilch, nada, nothing or however you want to describe it. Not even a jig strike was in the cards. The captain said it best “That was brutal”. We settled in to a delicious dinner of roast pork with all the trimmings. Dinner conversation was of better things to come tomorrow. We were headed East in search of kelp paddies. The next morning we actually had a jig strike or two producing a Dorado and a yellowfin. The first kelp produced about five yellowtail and a Dorado. We should have had twice that count with the lost fish. The captain reminded us to check our drags and knots before the next stop. We hit a dry paddy or two before spotting a large kelp. As soon as we stopped it was pandemonium. There were hookups all around the boat. The action continued fast and furious for about forty five minutes. I believe the final count was thirty five yellows and two dodos. Sardines seemed to be the top producer of fish. The iron also worked well. Size 6 or 6X jr in just about any color produced well. I saw scrambled egg, Dorado, and blue/white all take fish. A few more stops and it was time to head for the dock. The final count was fifty yellows, one yellowfin, and three Dorado. Congratulations to Marty Barden with his jackpot winning thirty two pound yellowtail. Marty received ten first place Club points. There were no points or jackpot the first day as no fish were caught. Congratulations to Jeff Davis who won the 50/50 drawing. Jeff received $63.00 and $62.00 went to the Club.

Recipe of the Month

Halibut with Avocado Sauce and Smoked Onions Courtesy of Chef Derrick Snyker

Dipping Sauce: 6 med cloves garlic 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground cumin 1 med green bell pepper, roughly chopped ½ bunch cilantro ½ bunch parsley, preferably flatleaf ¼ cup sherry vinegar, or other wine vinegar (not balsamic) 1 avocado, diced ½ cup olive oil

Smoked Onions: 1 med onion, peeled & sliced crosswise into 4 thick slices ½ TB olive oil 2 tsp Worcestershire Salt & pepper to taste Or use Wrights liquid smoke instead of smoking.

Halibut filets: 4 filets halibut, 6-8 oz, skin off Salt & pepper 1 TB pure New Mexico red chile powder (mild) Olive oil

Combine ingredients garlic through avocado in food processor, and puree into a smooth paste. With processor running, drizzle in ½ cup olive oil in a slow stream to make sauce.

To smoke the onion, arrange slices on rack of a stovetop smoker or an outdoor smoker, and smoke with alder chips for ½ hour or up to an hour for more flavor. Slice onions ¼ inch and sauté in ½ TB olive oil over medium high heat, stirring constantly, until onions finish cooking. Add Worcestershire and season with salt and pepper. Allow Worcestershire to “sear in” to onions, then remove from heat and reserve. (or add Wrights liquid smoke, to taste, if you don’t have a smoker).

Season halibut with salt and pepper. Dust filets with chile powder. Pan sear in olive oil in a hot pan, turning once. Oven finish in pan, if desired.

To serve, pool sauce on plate and top with halibut. Garnish with smoked onions. Serve with potatoes & seasonal veggies.

Stop by and get your reels serviced and

start that gift list.
