Ahome of stately proportions and daring design crowns a land of equal presence and appeal. Edged by golf course greens, the gentle pull of the Bow River, and a park-like setting, it embodies a peaceful sanctuary of inner-city merits, in harmony with its landscape. Organically crafted from natural elements, a timber frame design sheds light and its own points of view on earthen charms.
Deciding to rebuild on land the family knew and loved so well,
care and attention to detail was top-of-mind when deciding on the home
that would ultimately fulfill the promise of its landscape. “We wanted to
maximize the area’s light and views, and build something that would flow
with the natural elements of the setting,” share the owners, who decided that
a timber frame structure would best accommodate their desires and comple-
ment a home of generous stone and wood features.
Drawing inspiration from homes in Canmore and the West Coast, the fam-
ily was awed by mountain-style architecture of a scale and connection that
speaks to the land. “Our home sits on three acres but if feels like a hundred
because of the forest setting. We have two teenage sons, and we like to enter-
tain friends and a large extended family so we built a home that could satisfy
everyone’s needs for privacy and entertainment.”
Beneath a towering twenty-seven foot ceiling the great room features generous, rounded dimensions with Brazilian cherry hardwoods that anchor a structural, dual-sided wood-burning fireplace. Curved wall beam detailing accents the broad span of windows that afford views of the river. Wrought iron wall sconces illuminate wall columns and complement the chandelier.

Designed and built by the talented team at
Timberock Home Developments, nearly 6,600
livable square feet are accentuated by indigenous
landscaping and desirable outdoor features that
includes a forced walkout to maximize light at
a level of recreation. “They saw my home and
wanted to explore a design along a timber frame
standard,” explains president Jonn Lavertu of
Timberock Homes who was inspired by the
home’s originality that includes a rounded great
room with 180-degree views. “It was a challenge
just from the aspect of fitting square windows
into round walls, but it was a nice, flat lot that
opened itself to opportunities,” states Jonn,
adding that the forced walkout required consid-
erable excavation with sizable retaining walls and
drainage to accommodate the lower patio.
The home’s sprawling open decor was also
enhanced by Timberock interior designer Sheri
Lavertu, who assisted in evolving a natural pal-
ette of finishes and textures within the timber
frame structure—an appropriate backdrop for
the existing antique collection.
Utilizing the expertise of Crazy Creek Timber
Frames, they employed authentic mortise and
tenon joinery secured by hickory pegs with a
hand-hewn finish on custom-stained fir tim-
bers. “For the roof in the great room we adapted
a Kobe truss design with straight and curved
timbers joined by a timber pendant,” describes
Marla Taylor of Crazy Creek. “It adds tremen-
dous interest and depth to the room.”
Paying close attention to window features and
benefits, an anodized bronze finish was chosen
that changes colour depending on the direction
of sunlight. Also energy conscious with low-E
argon filled efficiency, the windows help sustain
interior temperatures with heat reflective prop-
erties. Adopted for its natural energy efficiency,
a geo-thermal heating and cooling system fur-
ther services domestic hot water and in-floor
hydronic heating needs.
“Timberock had some great ideas and they
contributed far beyond our expectations,” com-
mend the owners. “We had a vision but they
were the ones who focused on artistic and archi-
tectural details and brought it all together.”
Kootenai Brown boulders form retain-ing walls and align the stamped con-crete of the lower and upper patios.
Natural charms greet upon entry, where a dramatic display of fir timber frame construction affords gener-ous views of vaulted heights within. Flagstone floors flow to the maple staircase with vertical grain fir newel posts and wrought iron detailing.

Willing to accessorize, and having the talent to do so, enabled one family to express their own crafted style within the beauty of a phe-nomenal McKinley Masters home. Hosting Old World, European flair with flourishing strokes of originality, each room features eye-catching elements and a style all its own.
Warm, personal styling characterizes the great room, where nineteen-foot ceilings accommodate overlook views. Natural stone continues to surface a wall of viewscale windows and the dual sided fireplace accented with a knotty alder mantle and sandstone hearth.
A custom knotty-alder front entry with beveled glass inserts opens to tumbled travertine floors that lead to the arched and alder-capped pillared entry of the dining room. A hand-painted dropped-dome ceiling centers dining pleasure.
