OUR BEACHStroll a short way down Weld Lane to find yourself on our driftwood strewn beach. By day, enjoy views of New Zealand's highest mountain Aoraki / Mt Cook and see the iconic Hokitika driftwood sign. As evening comes, get a picture perfect sunset at Sunset Point and gaze at the stars.

OUR FOODA picnic at the beach, great coffee and cafe fare or fine dining, it's your choice. Menus feature delicious homemade foods and West Coast Whitebait, a local favourite. Follow that up with a drink while soaking in the view - cool.

OUR SHOPS It's a walkable town so park the car and stretch the legs out. Unique gifts are easy to find with quality arts and crafts and handmade items on offer. And since we are a full service town, you can find all those essentials you need for travel too.

OUR PEOPLE Hokitika blends an interesting mix of descendants of those tough old gold miners, the local Maori people, an artisan community and people who moved here because of the untamed, natural wilderness and relaxed atmosphere. Come enjoy the slower pace of life, have a chat and soak in the view with us.

Hokitika has really embraced its beach - to be honest it is hard to ignore, it practically laps the main street.

Driftwood & SandThis summer event is a celebration of art on the Hokitika beach. Held annually in late January, participants are invited to use any materials they find on the beach. Budding artists work side by side with professionals to build amazing sculptures that are then left for the tides to reclaim them.www.driftwoodandsand.co.nz

OUR ARTISTSYou can wander around town and get the unique experience of meeting artists in their working studios. Learn about the creative process, the materials used, the inspiration behind their work and go home with a unique gift. Talk to pounamu and bone carvers, photographers, painters, glass blowers, sculptors, wood turners, potters, jewellers, craftspeople and metal, stone and textile artists.

PUBLIC ARTThere are many artistic surprises throughout town - see how many you can find. Take-a-Seat artseats are a good place to stop and rest your feet while soaking in the view and several art sculptures are dotted about too. Visit them on the self-guided Points of Interest Loop - a one to two hour stroll that features much of Hokitika’s public art pieces. In summer, visit the beach to see the inspired work of locals and visitors alike, created during the Driftwood & Sand Festival.See our CBD map for Points of Interest Loop.

GET CREATIVEParticipate in community events like Junk2Funk and Driftwood & Sand to make your own artistic masterpieces. Local stores even let you design, create and carve your own jewellery, and our library often features craft projects for the kids.

Arts & crafts In Hokitika, there are probably more galleries and studios per capita than anywhere in NZ.

Home of PounamuFor a small town, Hokitika struck it big in the resources stakes. Before the gold rushes, Maori were heading here for another precious stone - pounamu. Just north of town is the Arahura River, home of pounamu (also known as greenstone or New Zealand jade). Its strength, durability and beauty meant it was used for weapons, tools and personal ornaments - and denoted great status. As the birthplace of pounamu, Hokitika is a vital stop to learn about the stone and watch it being carved. There are many talented carvers offering stunning jewellery and art pieces that will make for a treasured gift back home.

BUSY PORTThe Hokitika port was a busy place during the gold rush, with in excess of 40 ships alongside the wharf at any one time. It wasn’t easy getting there though - the river bar entrance claiming over 100 strandings and 30 ships lost.

LIVING HISTORYThese days you can do a self-guided Points of Interest Loop, view old images with a mobile app or visit the Carnegie Building and an industrial heritage park. Many of the local bush walks also feature historical information and relics. See our CBD map for Points of Interest Loop.

GOLD PANNINGThere is still gold in them-there hills. Pick up a gold pan and head to one of the public fossicking areas at Goldsborough and Ross to try your luck.

THE LUMINARIESEleanor Catton’s 2013 Man Booker Prize winning novel The Luminaries is set in Hokitika circa 1866 and brings to life the rip-roaring gold era.Refer to our maps for locations mentioned in the book.

AVIATION FIRSTIt is a little known fact that Hokitika’s airport was the home of New Zealand’s first licensed air service, Air Travel (NZ) Ltd, which operated from 1934 until 1947. A replica of a Fox Moth biplane (ZD-ADI) can be found at the airport.

history & Heritage To say Hokitika has had a colourful past is a bit of an understatement. At the height of the gold rushes in the 1860s it boasted 102 hotels.

WESTLAND INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE PARKIf you think ‘industrial heritage’ means staring at old machines that don’t work, think again. The Westland Industrial Heritage Park boasts a keen group of volunteers that bring Hokitika and the West Coast’s industrial heritage to life - noisily! The Park’s big engine shed features working Ruston engines and kids, big and small, will love the large collection of fire engines. You can also see the first stage coach that made the trip over the mountains and the Bach engine used to roast coffee beans for those thirsty gold miners.Best of all, enjoy the hospitality at the P ark , as you are guided by locals with a wealth of knowledge. Located near the Hokitika airport. Open to the public most days, large groups by appointment. Contact 022 043 2877

Hokitika has it good. Easy access to untamed natural wilderness...in all directions.

LAKE MAHINAPUAJust 10 mins south of town, it is surrounded by native bush, has numerous family-friendly walks and cycleways, sailing and is a great place to swim. The water is surprisingly warm.

LAKE KANIEREGo for action or just kick back and relax here. Surrounded by the mountains and bush and only 20 mins inland from town, it is popular for picnicking, water skiing, kayaking, fishing, walking, cycling and mountain biking.

KAYAKINGHokitika is close to some of the world’s best white water kayaking with continuous technical rapids careering through narrow canyons and lush rain forest. For those who want to take it a little easier, there are lakes, creeks and the lower rivers to explore.

WALKS AND TRAMPINGFrom a short one-minute walk through rainforest to Dorothy Falls to multi-day tramps, there is a walk to suit any ability. See our Out & About map for a full listing of local walks.

FISHINGSpin or fly fish for sea-run and river trout all year round and salmon can be hooked in season. Surf casting for Kahawai at the Hokitika River or whitebaiting is also a real thrill.

The vivid turquoise water surrounded by lush native bush looks too good to be true - but trust us, it is well worth a visit. A 40 minute (35km) drive from town.

WEST COAST WHITEBAITFor the visitor it may be hard to understand why we get so excited about a tiny translucent fish, but on the West Coast, whitebait is a big deal. Whitebaiters can be seen lining the Hokitika River in season (1 Sept to 14 Nov) and you can even have a go yourself with local net hire available. Or, just let someone else do the hard work and head to one of the many restaurants and cafes that feature whitebait on the menu. To learn more of our whitebaiting history, visit Point of Interest #1.

The annual Take-A-Seat Public Art Project was run by WAI (Westland Arts Inc.), a voluntary group whose aim is to increase the awareness, enjoyment of, and participation in the arts in the region.

Artists submitted designs for an ‘artseat’ (a sittable sculpture) in a specific Hokitika town location, with finalists’ designs assessed by judges and voted on by the public. Thanks to generous sponsorships and fundraising efforts, ‘Take-a-Seat’ resulted in seven unique and inspiring artseats dotted about town and along the beach and river.

You can visit the artseats while walking the self-guided Points of Interest Loop. Take-A-Seat and enjoy the view!

For more information and artseat locations, see our Points of Interest Loop page and CBD map.
