Why do we go to work ?

• For most people, the reason we go to work is for something outside of work.

The reason we want our workplace to be safe.

Safety Talks

• Every day we have the opportunity to talk to our people and work with them.

• I try to instill in people that going home safe just does not happen without effort and also it is not up to someone else to do it for them.

• In particular, I use:• The Prestart Meeting• Safety Tip of the Day• The Toolbox Talk• Pause for Safety Days (Holcim initiative)

• With these basic tools, I target “at risk behaviour”.

At Risk Behaviour

• Risk is everywhere, all around us, all of the time.

• Humans are good at, “At Risk Behaviour”. You only have to walk or drive down the street to see some fine examples.

• Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment is the key to safe work practice.

• Most workplace incidents are the result of behavioural issues and lack of use of systems, not lack of systems. We have plenty of systems, paperwork alone, no matter how much, will not keep us safe. Our behaviour is the key to success.

Safety Talks

• THE PRESTART MEETING:

• You have 20 or more opportunities per month to talk to the crew at the start of the day.

• What are you going to tell or ask them ?

• THIS IS WHAT I DO:• What we are doing today and how we will do it• Why we are doing it.• Who is doing it.• Where we are doing it.

Safety Talks

• What went well yesterday ?

• An opportunity to celebrate success (daily).

• It has a safety focus but is open to any topic.

• What learning opportunities were there yesterday ?

• The most important part of the meeting !!!!

• It allows us to focus on the Main Game – to prevent fatality !!

• We learn from our mistakes. Hazard reporting and Near Miss reporting are the foundation for our improvement. I see Risk Assessment as our “Crystal Ball to the Future”.

• “Nothing to report here”, is a lot worse than many hazards and near miss reports.

• Silence here, makes me feel uneasy.

Safety Talks

• What needs to be done today ?

• I got this bit wrong initially !!!!

• News just to hand:

• Anything you want to tell the crew: Policy Sales Equipment Things at other sites Anything of interest

• People like news of issues in the industry, in the company or in their daily work.

Safety Talks

• Safety Tip of the day:

Training Session

Toolbox Talk

Policy Refresher

Quirky safety saying to keep safety at the front of the crews thoughts as they go out the door to work. “Regret what you have done, not what you have not

done”. “If it’s gunna be, it’s up to me”

• List of Attendees (and those who were not there so that you can target them and tick them off later)

In Summary: The Prestart Meeting

• Fully engages the team

• Sets clear targets and expectations

• Makes it personal, it has “them at the forefront”

• If you rely on luck, it will run out.

• People are not interested in what you know, but, they want to know you care. The Prestart Meeting does this by setting the scene for the day. A little preparation here the day before says a lot the next morning.

• Two things that count the most: You and the environment that you create. Develop your own style and therefore the working environment.

• Don’t take yourself too seriously.

After the Prestart Meeting

• Who turns the computer on before 11am ? Inspect working faces first Plant Workshop Weighbridge Leave your phone in the office

• The Site Manager / Supervisor touches more people (doers) than any other person on site. A good Supervisor is essential. Get or develop one you can rely on !

• Don’t accept, ‘the way it is’. You can make it better !

• Get people to “show you the problems”.

• Best way to find out what is bad, is, do it yourself !

Walk the Talk

• A sense of unease is a good thing for a Manager or a Supervisor to experience. It will never be an easy job.

• You need to: Continuously work on eliminating hazards and the

associated risks Continuously work on eradicating at risk behaviour Don’t let the temporary fix be the permanent fix The message gets through if you keep up the delivery

and live the ideals yourself and “walk the talk”. ‘Expect what you inspect”, perform regular inspections

of equipment and tasks. “A day in the field is worth a week in the office”.

People Development

• The process of information and involvement empowers people. Some respond so well that they seek further opportunity.

• The recent Participatory Ergonomics program that has been operating in the Central West has given two of our men more confidence to talk in front of others and perform detailed Risk Assessments.

• One fellow has approached me and said that due to his involvement in the PE program, he would like to take on extra responsibility. Initially he was concerned about his self confidence and literacy. Now he is keen to progress.

At Risk Behaviour

• I tried to get my people thinking, “off site”, by introducing “At Home Examples” of “At Risk Behaviour” in a Toolbox Talk. We did this once per week for approx. 8 months. Slow at first but some good stuff eventually. Easier for most people to see at risk behaviour in others at first rather than in themselves. Then focus on themselves.

• Examples of risk taking and low risk tolerance:

1. Mobile phones whilst driving, what is going through the drivers mind, the potential fine or the potential crash?

2. Ipods whilst driving, would you die or kill for a song?

3. Speeding drivers

4. Road rage / competitiveness for 1 car length ahead

5. The bloke and the whipper snipper. Situational awareness.

At Risk Behaviour

• We need to get better at identifying hazards, associated risks and risk tolerance.

• Everyone takes risks.

• Not everyone sees risks in the same view.

• Different people handle risks in different ways.

• eg: Brother in Law vs. me. He is a self confessed “Conflict Junkie” working for the UN in Iraq vs. me and my conservative country lifestyle.

• The challenge is to get our people to see industrial hazards, the associated risks and potential for injury in the same focus.

At Risk Behaviour

• What we do for work is similar to many other mining / quarrying / delivery industries. So, what we are doing is not new.

• We and our crew have the choice in our work to say, “no, that is too dangerous”. As Supervisors and Managers, we need to nurture this and respect this.

These guys have no choice, no option to say, “no”.

Ask the Crew………

• To remain focused and have sufficient self discipline to do the right thing even when no one is looking.

• To “self trigger, keep eyes and mind on task and therefore avoid the line of fire”.

• To report the Hazard.

• To assess the Risk.

• To say, “no, it is unsafe”.

• We all need to follow this path in-order to make our work day journey a safe one and go home to the real reason we come to work.

Remain focused and get others on board to follow you
