Military Spouse Day - Governor Haslam proclaimed Friday, 11 May 2012 as Military Spouse
Appreciation Day. Tennessee Military Spouses are recognized as a very important person in the United
States military. Every Soldier, Marine, Sailor, Airman and Coast Guardsman knows that their family
bears most of the burden during numerous deployments and constant training. Military spouses are
asked to carry most of the load while their Service Member is gone. They are effective single moms and
dads for extended periods of time, and the load is very heavy. MG Max Haston recognized the sacrifices
made by Military Spouses in support of their Service Member during a reception held at iostudio in
Nashville, TN. COL Jeff Archer and Mrs. Anne Haston supported the Military Spouses reception in
Knoxville, TN. Anne knows the sacrifices of a Military Spouse, her Soldier deployed in support of
Operation Iraqi Freedom and has been “deployed to Nashville” for over 12 years. In West Tennessee,
Dennis Moon and Larry Barbee recognized Military Spouses in conjunction with Teapot Festival’s
opening ceremony 29 April. All three events were excellent. We salute and honor the Military Spouse,
our partners in freedom!
Yellow Ribbon Event - All Family Members are encouraged to attend Yellow Ribbon events.
Commanders and leaders play a critical role in assuring that Service Members and their families attend
Yellow Ribbon events where they will hear information on health care, counseling, education, training
opportunities, financial, and legal benefits.
The J9 has introduced the During Deployment Yellow Ribbon event; it is designed especially for the
Family Members. It features topics related to challenges that may have arisen since the Service Member
deployed, as well as reintegration techniques in preparation of the redeployment process. It is a great
time to get the most up to date information on the unit’s mission, meet, talk and console others walking
through the same deployment struggles. The J9 Team and Service Providers are on site to answer
questions and connect Family Members with local resources to enhance well-being.

THE PERFECT MODEL OF RESILIENCE Who comes to your mind when you think about the most inspiring or ultimate model of “resilience”; a friend, a family
member, or perhaps a co-worker? Scripture tells us that the perfect model of resilience is none other than our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. Consider Hebrews 12:3, “Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.”
When we are faced with trials and setbacks in our lives, we are encouraged to turn first to Christ as our model of what it means to
bounce back from adversity. He is the exemplary archetype of resilience! What makes Jesus Christ the perfect resilient mentor you
might ask?
Christ faced every hardship you and I will ever face; not only physically, but emotionally, relationally, and spiritually.
Hebrews 4:15 states, “This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testing we do, yet he did not
sin.” So, how did Jesus Christ, the Son of God, handle setbacks in His life? What model for resiliency does He leave for us today?
1. He prayed. The Gospels record several times when Christ prayed. He prayed for strength, wisdom, forgiveness for others and
most importantly, His Father’s will. Prayer relinquishes our feeble control over our present troubles and taps into the eternal
resources of God’s grace and mercy.
2. He knew His calling. Jesus knew His life’s purpose and mission (See John 4:34, 5:30, and 6:38). Realizing that you have value and a
specific life purpose will cause you to look past the obstacles in your life. It will keep you single-minded and focused. As the old
saying goes, “If you aim at nothing, that’s exactly what you’ll hit”.
3. He had an awesome support system. Mark 3:13 reveals, “Afterward Jesus went up on a mountain and called out the ones he wanted
to go with him. And they came to him.” Even out of the twelve disciples, Jesus was extremely close to only three. A good support
system, (battle buddy/wingman), will help carry you along when the going gets tough.
4. He knew God’s Word. When Satan tempted our Lord in the wilderness (Matthew 4), Jesus used the Word of God to counterattack.
When you and I are facing trials in our life, we need the truth from God’s Word to dispel the erroneous thoughts and false emotions
that tempt us to give up.
5. He took time to replenish Himself. Matthew 14:13a states, “As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be
alone . . .” I’m amazed at how so many people have bought into the lie that “multi-tasking” means success. If the Son of God Himself
had to find time to refill His well, then how foolish are we to think that we can burn the candle at both ends and still be resilient when
knocked down? The people that can bounce back from adversity have made rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation a valuable part of
their life.

Just For Laughs!
The old minister had all of his remaining teeth pulled and new dentures were being
made. The first Sunday, he only preached 10 minutes. The second Sunday, he
preached only 20 minutes. But, on the third Sunday, he preached 1 hour 25 minutes.
When asked about this by some of the congregation, he responded this way . . .
The first Sunday, my gums were so sore it hurt to talk.
The second Sunday, my dentures were hurting a lot.
The third Sunday, I accidentally grabbed my wife's dentures... and I couldn't stop
talking!

May is Mental Health Month
1 in 4: That’s how many adult Americans live with a diagnosable mental health condition.
While mental health and substance abuse conditions are common, they are extremely treatable, and
individuals go on to recover and lead full and productive lives.
The purpose of May is Mental Health Month is to spread the word about how important mental health is
to overall health. Sadly, many people living with a mental health condition—as high as 50 percent---
never seek or receive help due to lack of information, stigma, cost or lack of health insurance. Many
people may be reluctant to ask for help, feel that they should be able to handle their problems on their
own, or don’t know where to find help.
But there are many community and national resources that can help people find support and treatment.
The passage of the federal mental health parity and addition equity act also expands access to care.
That law, which applies to organizations with more than 50 employees, doesn’t require coverage for
mental health and substance abuse conditions. But if the employer does offer behavioral health
coverage, it must be on par with coverage for other medical conditions. Higher deductibles, steeper
co-pays and other restrictions are no longer allowed for mental health and substance abuse treatment.
If you or someone you love is concerned about possible behavioral health issues, there are many
online tools and screenings that you can access anonymously:
www.mentalhealthscreening.org
www.afterdeployment.org
www.militarymentalhealth.org
www.nmha.org (Mental Health America)
If you’d like to talk with someone directly about your concerns, you can also call Guard Your Buddy, a
24/7 resource dedicated to Service Members and Family Members of the TN National Guard. Reach
out to them anytime at (855) 435-7492. You can also download the app to your smart phone, or access
the website at www.guardyourbuddy.com.
Most importantly, don’t ignore the concerns in yourself or a loved one. Making that call, taking the
screening, or talking to your buddy may be the first step in getting back on track.

In celebration of April being named Month of the
Military Child, J9 Military & Family Readiness
Operations hosted our first annual 1 mile Crawl/
Walk/Run in front of BLDG 250 in Smyrna, TN on 20
APR 2012. This was a time for service members
and their families to come together and enjoy the
great weather and festivities, with a bounce house
set up for the kids, a face paint station, and a grab
bag raffle held after the race. After the run, the
participants were served a gourmet meal of
hotdogs, chips and popcorn, topped off with a sno
cone dessert.
Before the run, we took time to commemorate the
partnership between Child and Youth Programs
and the Tennessee Counterdrug Taskforce, with
the presentation of a plaque to LTC Gentry in
appreciation to their continued support. We look
forward to next year and anticipate even more
support for this fun activity held in honor of our
military families.

Sexual Assault Response Coordinator
A confidential and anonymous sexual
assault hotline for the DoD Community
Services Offered
Users have three ways -- "click, call or text" -- to get confidential
support.
CLICK: Logging on to www.SafeHelpline.org allows users to
receive live, one-on-one confidential help with a trained
professional through a secure instant-messaging format. The website also provides vital information
about recovering from and reporting sexual assault. This service can also be accessed via a format
for mobile phones.
CALL: Calling 877-995-5247 allows users to speak with trained Safe Helpline staff for personalized
advice and support. Safe Helpline staff can transfer callers directly to installation-based Sexual
Assault Response Coordinators (SARCs)/ On-call SAPR Victim Advocates, civilian rape crisis centers,
Military OneSource, or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The "warm hand-off" process
personally connects the user with a resource representative for further assistance. Staff will transfer
the caller to any resource at the location of the caller's choice. For example, a caller may want to
speak to the SARC at the location where their unit is based, not where they are currently located. If
the contact is unavailable at the time of the "warm hand-off," the Safe Helpline staff will offer contact
information to the caller to follow-up with support personnel at a later time.
TEXT: Texting a location or zip code to 55-247 in the U.S. and 202-470-5546 outside the U.S. allows
users to receive contact information for the SARC; medical, legal, spiritual, and military police
personnel; and Department of Veterans Affairs personnel at their installation or base.

"Gold Star Family and Mountain Man Memorial March Recognition Weekend" 20-21 April, Gatlinburg, Tn.
I attended as invited and assisted with events and coordination with Gold Star Families throughout the
weekend. It was an excellent opportunity for me to meet some of my Survivors that I had not had
previously met. Also an opportunity for me to see some of my Survivors that I only see annually at this
event. I had twenty (20) Gold Star Families
represented from East TN. A total of Sixty-One Gold Star Families were represented at this year's
event, and another Twenty (20) or so who could not attend still had teams or individuals carry their
Gold Star Flag.
American Gold Star Mothers, and Gold Star Dads of America organizations were both represented.
Many ROTC & JR ROTC programs participated in the Run/March carrying the Gold Star Flags of the
Families, in addition to other groups and individuals. I estimate in excess of Six-Hundred (600) people
attended the event, and about One-Hundred & Fifty (150) participated in the March/Run. Other
Veteran's Groups and Organizations to include Rolling Thunder, Patriot Guard Riders, American
Legion, DAV, TN National Guard, and others supported this event.
The TN Dept of Veteran Affairs Commissioner - Many-Bears Grinder not only attended and
participated in the Ceremonies, but also was a participant in the actual event (March/Run).
Thanks to the University of TN Army & Air Force ROTC Departments, the American Legion Post #2,
and all others that helped to make this event a success. This event continues to grow each and every
year, and is a fitting way to show support for the fallen, and their families.

On Thursday, April 12th the home of SPC Michael
Clark and his wife Carrie was totally destroyed
by fire. The Clarks, who have three small
children ages 6, 4, and 19 months lived in Obion,
TN. They were renting their home and had no
rental insurance and lost everything in the fire,
barely escaping with their lives. Mrs. Clark
broke out a bathroom window and had to jump
out, falling several feet to the ground, suffering
smoke inhalation and bruises. SPC Clark is a
member of the McKenzie unit, Det 2, Trp C, SPC
Troops Squadron, 278th ACR. With the assistance
of the Family Assistance Specialist’s team
consisting of Joe W. Mayberry, Shirley Lee, and
Terry Black, combining their efforts, help was immediately on the way. Clothes and
household items were donated and delivered. Financial assistance was obtained from
various sources. In the enclosed picture Ms. Diana Carter, Secretary of Camden Elks
Lodge presents a check for $1000.00 to Carrie Clark to assist in their recovery efforts.
Also pictured are Chaplain (CPT) Russ Holcomb, Family Assistance Specialist Terry
Black, and Family Readiness Support Assistant Dennis Moon who delivered three
carloads of items including toys, clothes and household items. Because of this all out
effort on the part of our family program staff, this family is making great strides in their
attempt to recover from this awful tragedy. This is true Family Assistance at its best and
is what we are all about! Family Assistance Specialist’s are responsible for helping all
military and their families during time of need or a question that needs answered such
as Tricare/DEERS. Legal, Crisis Intervention, Financial, ID Card, and local/national

One of the easiest ways to get help is by dialing 2-1-1, Tennessee’s community
services help line. When you call, you’ll get a real person, one who is trained to
help you sort out your needs, and then give you phone numbers and addresses of
the closest places where you can get help. 2-1-1 has a database of more than
10,000 health and human services programs, cross-referenced for all sorts of
keywords. So don’t worry if you don’t know what type of service you need or the
name of an agency — just talk with the specialist at the other end of the line and
she or he can help you find what you need. All calls are free and completely

Guard Your Buddy is a joint effort by the Tennessee National Guard, The Jason
Foundation, Inc., and E4 Health to give the men, women, and families in the
Tennessee National Guard constant access to critical life resources, on-demand
counseling, and on-call suicide prevention.
The Guard Your Buddy project is designed to enhance the excellent resources
already in place for the Tennessee National Guard.
Our Mission
The Guard Your Buddy program is a community driven communication/
engagement platform that brings all Guard members, particularly the at-risk
Guard Members, in contact with on-demand resources and support with the
main goal of preventing suicide.
