In the non-profit organization FREEARTUS,

Berliners, Germans, Europeans have teamed up

with newcomers from the Middle East to help

integrate war refugees into our society and

especially into the creative industries, research

and education.

We do this very successfully with numerous

activities, from organizing international student

projects - for example in co-operation with the

SRH universities in Berlin, the Venice Biennale

or the ALBA Académie des Beaux-Arts in

Beirut - to the artist or job mediation.

In Lebanon, we support refugee camps to

improve the living conditions and enabling

residents to develop a new life perspective.

Some refugees are as well prepared to return

to the destroyed homeland. Additionally, we

try to anchor the topics of flight and expulsion

with journalistic and artistic means in the

media and the minds of the decision makers,

but above all in the hearts of the people. Our

exhibitions and lectures on this content are

very well received.

We support our partners in Egypt in their

efforts to build cultural centers. Or in

conveying a differentiated and hopeful image

of the country.

We are firmly convinced that change and

migration offer great opportunities for

Germany and Europe, but also for every

individual. It just takes a bit of energy and self-

confidence to tackle the tasks!

The newcomers wanted a cool place in the

center of Berlin to meet up, to meet Germans

and Europeans in a pleasant atmosphere. They

wanted to present themselves and that the

Middle East is more than scary pictures in the

media: namely, a magnificent ancient culture -

which has shaped Europe decisively - and at

the same time a highly modern, often

cosmopolitan and diverse. That's how we

invented LAWRENCE. About two-thirds of our

team have escape backgrounds.

LAWRENCE opened on 11th August 2017. The

name is a reference to T.H. Lawrence, made

famous as Lawrence of Arabia - adventurer,

Arab friend, a British officer, archaeologist,

secret agent and writer. A dazzling, and at the

same time, a controversial personality

The LAWRENCE offers many culinary

pleasures. We use only high quality and fresh

products for our cuisine. Our wines - many of

them from Lebanon and Syria - are entirely

organic and come from the best growing

areas. We calculate our prices as moderately

as possible so as not to exclude anyone from

visiting the LAWRENCE. Every euro of profit

we can make goes 100% into our humanitarian,

social and cultural projects. We don’t receive

any kind of state or institutional financing.

By the way, did you know that in the days of

Moorish Spain, about 1200 years ago, the

Arabs introduced table linen in Europe and

drinking out of glasses? Until then people

drank pitchers or cups in Europe. Glasses

came from India via the Silk Road to Baghdad

and from there to the residence of the Emir of

Cordoba. There was also the food sequence

with appetizer, for example, a soup, a main

course - usually with meat or fish - and a sweet

dessert invented. And with the help of the

toothbrush, a likewise Arabian invention, one

could smile afterward again radiantly. The fact

that we smelled pleasant was also due to the

introduction of the deodorant, also by the

Arabs.
