Did they ever tour the Playhouse's interior?

R.J. Heisenbotlie Architects. has successfully restored Miami Freedom Tower, Miami City Hall ,

Miami Woman's Club, Gusman Center for the Perfonning Arts and Vizcaya Village. They wish

to be a big part of the Coconut Gro\€ Playhouse renovation. Many fear that the fa9ade will be

sa\€d and the rest of the building demolished , others fear that the whole building will be

demolished. Last we heard that GableStage is going to manage the property and the theater

will be reduced to 300 seats.

Richard J. Heisenbollle's plans for the Playhouse,(shown here) presented in March 2013, make

the current structure into an elegant structure with retail on the first floor, facing Main Highway

and Charles A\€nue . Awnings gi\ € it an urban feel, the cool, beige color makes it look

majestic .

He is quite sure the grandeur can be retumed to the playhouse without hurting the current

structure. The seating capacity would be reduced to 700. Most of the interior would of course

be redone including the stage area, but this is good in that it would allow larger productions and

allow for larger sets . The basic plan calls for restoration and not demolition.

Following is a letter from Mr. Heisenbottle:

From t he outset of discussion on the re-birth of the abandoned Coconut Grove Play house

it has bee n assumed by the Miami-Dade County th at only the front fa~ad e of the building

is contributing to its hi storic designation. Th is assumption was made because the

authors of the appro \'ed City ofMiami Histo ric Designation Report, placed one se ntence

to that effect in th e des ignation report. This one se ntence probably went unnotic ed by

many HP Board members as they voted for its designatio n, but years later that one

Oawed sentence has shaped th e assumptions on which Miami-Dade County's cultural

facilities building program was based . That assumption is that excep t for the main fa~ a de

Few cities embody the American dream like Miami. For decades, Cubans seeking refuge have made Miami their own, leaving a lasting legacy enriched with culture from their homeland. A new exhibit at MDC Museum of Art + Design celebrates the nostalgia, success, and triumph of this singular immigrant experience. "Cuba Out of Cuba: Through the Lens of Alexis Rodriguez- Duarte in Collaboration With Tico Torres" inaugurates the new Cultural Legacy Gallery, a permanent space dedicated to the impact of Cuban culture on South Florida and throughout the world, housed at the National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College (600 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). The exhibit features iconic photographs of Cuban figures living away from the island, from pelformers and designers to writers and artists. "Cuba Out of Cuba" was shot over the past 20 years in Miami, New York, London, Paris, Florence, Venice, and Los Angeles. The photos and keepsakes highlight the legacies of Celia Cruz, Bebo Valdes, Gloria Estefan, Cristina Saralegui, Andy Garcia, Cundo Bermudez, Nilo Cruz, and Paquito D'Rivera, among other Cubans who have culturally influenced generations. "Cuba Out of Cuba" will be on display through August 30, 2015. Museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
