Helping abused kids with pet therapy
A service learning projectBy Anju Sarat
Involves using trained pets, especially dogs to help abused and at-risk children
Pet therapy dogs bring happiness to at-risk children
They teach them respect and discipline
What is pet therapy?
Volunteers visit facilities that house abused children along with therapy dogs
They allow children to play with the therapy dogs and this improves their self-esteem
What do you do?
How can one volunteer?
You can volunteer if you have a dog that can get along with children
You will need to attend a session at Gabriel’s Angels, a non-profit organization that provides pet therapy
Gabriel’s Angels is named after Gabriel, a Weinmarner who started giving therapy to abused children in 2000
He passed away in May 2010 after changing the lives of hundreds of children in the Valley
