Safer Bus Travel

Irymple Secondary College had sessions last week on Safer Bus Travel presented by Professor Michael Kennedy from Monash University to our year 7 classes. Students were told that the “first safety responsibility is to yourself but you must have an awareness that you have a responsibility to your family, and friends to keep yourself safe.” Professor Kennedy went on to discuss the level of awareness everyone needs. He showed different photos of real life incidents where accidents occurred. He talked to students that there are “a bunch of rules, laws” that must be followed when using public transport.

He explained penalty points and what each fine costs. Professor Kennedy outlined that “if a citizen receives a standard fine it will cost them $777 whereas if it is a 10 penalty point fine it will cost that person $1550.”

ISC Drs in Schools Grand Opening

It was a big Tuesday last week as it heralded the official opening of our Drs in Schools Building and program. We had our FLO students help with a free BBQ and sausage sizzle at recess, lots of give aways from Headspace, a grand prize from the raffle was won by Nick Swift from yr 10, and other activities like mural painting, and outdoor games were organized by our wellbeing team and Drs in Schools committee.

Remember, Dr Kaleichi and nurse Mel are here every Tuesday morning from 9.00am-1.15pm to provide a range of supports and services to our student body. This is a free, confidential service. Students and their parents can ring the school or go to the front office, to Wellbeing or leadership for an appointment time or drop into the Dr in Schools building on a Tuesday morning. Due to Aths sports next Tuesday 4th September, no clinic will occur. It will resume on Tuesday 11th September when we are recognizing RUOK Day with a whole range of fun activities.

As part of the Drs in School program, this term we have to survey a number of our year 9 students about the service. Further information about this survey and an opt out form if you don't want your year 9 student to be surveyed about this program will be sent to the participating families.

Maths News On Wednesday, 22nd March, three Year 8 Maths groups combined in JHUB 1 and 2 opening learning space to undertake a common rich task on the current topic of Probability. We played MULTO and the students tried to create the best playing board using their understanding of the likleihood of each number occuring. Really pleasing to see the students working collaboratively across the classes.

Year 8 Central Australia Camp On Thursday we traveled to South Australia and stayed overnight at Spear Creek station. First night was a battle setting up camp and sleeping in 50km winds and rain! The next day we travelled to Coober Pedy where we stayed underground. Coober Pedy was a nice town. We looked at the the opal mine and did a tour of the town which was a lot of fun and a great start to the camp. On Saturday we traveled to the Uluru where we set up camp for two nights. We enjoyed some free time looking at the Rock from a distance and being fed pasta for dinner. The next day we enjoyed a tour around Uluru learning about the aboriginal stories, paintings and caves. We then went for a walk through a part of Kata Tjuta (previously known as the olgas) and experienced a magnificent view. One of the highlights of the trip was a sunset viewing of Uluru with snacks and soft drink. On Monday we traveled to Kings Creek Station where we set up camp before we went on an outstanding walk around the rim of the King Canyon Wall. The walk was strenuous but the view was unbelievable. That night we did a small walk and enjoyed some star gazing before setting up around a camp fire to enjoy some toasted marshmallows and a few dingo sightings. On Tuesday we set off early and arrived at Alice Springs where we set up camp for our final two nights. That evening we visited Rex at the Reptile Centre. Rex was very entertaining and taught us a lot about his pet crocodile and the other reptiles. We all enjoyed having an Olive Python slither around our necks and holding the different types of lizards. On Wednesday we visited Ormiston gorge where some of us went on an 8km hike before we then went for a swim in the water hole. We ended the day at Standley Chasm which was a short walk but a beautiful view. Thursday morning we did some last minute souvenir shopping in Alice Springs before travelling for 24 hours to get home. The year 8 Central Australia Camp was an amazing experience and we can’t recommend it highly enough to all those year 7’s who might be thinking of going next year.
