    THE PANDEMIC

    AND PROGRAM PLANNING

There is no doubt that our programs have been affected by the Coronaviruspandemic and it is difficult to predict what the impact may be on plans for 2021.We are anticipating the need to adjust or revise the StudioWorks Artist-in-Residence Program according to prevailing state guidelines for organizations, guidelines for travelers, and for the Tides Institute's policies, practices andcapacity. Given these extenuating circumstances, please consider the material inthis booklet as tentative and expect greater details and information about changesto be available over the next months. Those awarded residencies will be kept up-to-date and will be involved in the decision making process for any changes thatmay affect their term.

    APPLICATION PROCEDURESAND REQUIREMENTS

StudioWorks artists-in-residence are challenged to engage the community in some wayduring their stay. For example, artists may use community input as a point of inspirationor for feedback to work in progress, with information gathered during open studioevents, surveys, etc.; artists may create site-specific installations in their studios withcollaboratively made components; artists may offer workshops or educationalopportunities; use items from the collections of the museum as research materials forwork to be created and shared with the public.

Successful proposals consider place, location or site-specific elements or studies. Pastprojects have included incorporating the region's unique botany, ocean tides, marineresources, maritime or other history, international boundary, and other qualities intostudio projects or research. Generic proposals that could be done anywhere are lessfavored by jurors, as are proposals that solely consist of finishing existing work orpreparing for exhibitions. It is not necessary to figure out the logistics of the proposal forthe application, as those arrangements can be made with the assistance of residencystaff once the residency is awarded. For example, a proposal may involve working withsenior citizens, but it is not necessary to know the sites or locations for making suchconnections.

Artists who do not include a description of community engagement or a sociallyengaged practice in their proposal will not be considered for a residency.

StudioWorks artists-in-residence are not eligible for exhibition opportunities at TidesInstitute & Museum of Art as part of their residency but may apply for alumniopportunities, including exhibitions, following their stay.

Corwin Levi, 2018

Stipend:$2,000 for a 4-week residency; pro-rated for other terms: $1,000 for a 2-week residency;Stipends are paid 50% during the first week; 50% at conclusion of the residency.
