15 Greater Kashmir SRINAGAR | January 08, 2015, Thursday BRIEF SCORE: India 1 for 71 (Rohit 40*, Rahul 31*) trail Australia 7 for 572 dec (Smith 117, Warner 101, Rogers 95, Marsh 73, Burns 58, Shami 5-112) by 501 runs Smith hundred helps Australia post huge total Ranji Trophy: Karnataka inflict innings defeat on JK Gul out, Younus in for World Cup Melbourne, Jan 7: Steve Smith com- pleted his fourth century in as many matches on Wednesday as Australia compiled a daunting first innings total in the final test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Australian captain added to his incredible run of form against the tour- ists with a composed 117 as Australia, already holding an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, declared on 572 for seven shortly after tea on day two. In response to the huge total, India got off to a horrible start, losing in- form opener Murali Vijay for a duck on the third ball to left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc. But Lokesh Rahul (31 not out) and Rohit Sharma (40 not out), brought back after being dropped for the third test in Melbourne, ensured there was no further damage and took India to 71-1 at stumps. After Australia had resumed on 348-2, Shane Watson fell for 81 in the morning session with Shaun Marsh (73) the only batsman to get out in the after- noon. A half-century from Joe Burns (58) meant the home side’s top six bats- men made at least a fifty. Burns and Ryan Harris fell at the start of the third session to give India paceman Mohammed Shami his second five-wicket haul in tests. Watson and Smith added 196 for the third wicket after openers David Warner (101) and Chris Rogers (95) put on 200 on Tuesday as Australia’s top order cashed in on a flat pitch. Smith continued his extraordinary run of form, following up his 162 not out in the first test in Adelaide, 133 in the second test in Brisbane and 192 in the third test in Melbourne with another hundred. Resuming on 82, he reached his eighth test ton when he smashed a full toss from fast bowler Umesh Yadav for a boundary. Yadav gained a small measure of revenge when he dismissed Smith just before the break, finding the edge off an attempted drive and giving wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha a simple catch. Watson, batting cautiously after a lean run, looked set to register just his fifth test hundred since making his test debut a decade ago, only to throw his wicket away with a rash shot. He was caught by Ravichandran Ashwin at deep midwicket off the bowl- ing of Shami, marking the 24th time he had made a test half-century but failed to go on and reach triple figures. Marsh, run out for 99 in Melbourne, also missed out when he was caught behind off Shami, while Burns, playing in his second test, registered his first 50 with a composed display. Harris smashed Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 19 runs in an over and brought the crowd to their feet with his knock of 25 from nine deliveries. The quick runs from Harris prompted Smith to declare the innings. REUTERS SMITH JOINS GREATS Steven Smith has 698 runs in the series at an average of 139.6, placing him third behind Bradman (715) and Ponting (706) for most runs in a series against India. He has now scored six centuries in the first innings of his last seven Tests at home. Sohail Khan the big surprise in Pakistan squad Karachi, Jan 7: Pakistan announced their 15-man World Cup squad on Wednes- day, leaving out Fawad Alam and Umar Gul and including pace bowler Sohail Khan who last played internation- al cricket in 2011. Veteran batsman Younis Khan, who hit a purple patch in Test cricket but was mediocre in the recent ODIs against New Zealand, was also included in the squad. Left-hand middle-order batsman Fawad Alam, who has been Pakistan’s most reli- able ODI batsman of late, will feel unlucky to have missed out, the selectors instead preferring another player in similar mould, Haris Sohail. “We did consider both of them [Fawad and Malik], but in the end we believe Haris Sohail bowled well in the series against New Zealand with his left-arm bowling,” chief selector Moin Khan said. “He also gives us an added advantage of being a left-handed batsman.” Fast bowler Junaid Khan also returned from a knee injury after missing the series against New Zea- land, and will lead Paki- stan’s pace attack with Mohammad Irfan. Pakistan, placed in Group B, will open its campaign with a high- ly-charged clash against arch-rivals and defending champions India in Ade- laide on February 15 fol- lowed by matches against the West Indies, Zimbabwe, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Ireland. The top four teams from each of the two groups will qualify for the quarter-finals, leading up to the final in Mel- bourne on March 29. Khan said the team was selected after consultation with Misbah and coach Waqar Younis. “We selected the squad after thorough consulta- tion... and although no one can give assurances of results, we are hopeful that the team will do well,” said Khan, a member of Paki- stan’s only World Cup win- ning side in Australia in1992. SQUAD: Ahmed Shehzad, Moham- mad Hafeez, Sarfaraz ahmed, Younis Khan, Harris Sohail, Misbah ul Haq, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Maqsood, Shahid Afridi, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Irfan, Junaid Khan, Ehsan Adil, Sohail Khan, Wahab Riaz Malinga in Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad Colombo, Jan 7: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has picked injured fast bowler Lasith Mal- inga in their 15-man squad announced for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup which begins in Australia from Feb- ruary 14. Malinga underwent surgery on his leſt ankle in September last year and is cur- rently recuperating. He missed Sri Lank’s s last two ODI series against India and England. Malinga’s inclusion will, however, be subject to the fitness test. “Malinga is still recovering from surgery and everything is going well according to plan,” former Sri Lanka batsman Atapau said. “He will return for the last two ODI games in New Zealand.” SQUAD: Angelo Mathews (capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Lahiru Thirimanne (vice-capt), Dinesh Chandimal, Dimuth Karunaratne, Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga (sub- ject to fitness), Dhammika Prasad, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath, Sachithra Senanayake ‘Played bad cricket’ Srinagar, Jan 7: Skipper Parvez Rasool on Wednesday said that J&K played bad cricket against reigning champions Karnataka and deserved to lose the game. “If we look at the whole match and see how we played and how they went about the game, the difference is clear. They were a far better side than us and we deserved to lose,” Parvez told Greater Kashmir over phone from Hubli, soon aſter geing the drub- bing at the hands of the hosts. “It was too bad toss to loose on a green-top wicket. Still we should have played beer and given them a tough fight. On the same pitch we baed and bowled poorly while they did a superb job in both the depart- ments,” he said. “We are still at the third position on the points table and have got good chances to qualify for next round. We need an outright win and a draw in next matches and that will do for us,” Parvez said. GKNN Hubli, Jan 7: Such has been Karnataka’s domi- nance in the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy that they have more or less made it to the knock-out stages of the tournament after four matches. At the KSCA Hubli Cricket Ground, the dominance was exemplified as the defending champions blew away Jammu and Kashmir in under three days to register an innings-and-30-run vic- tory. Four wins in a row this season extended an unbeaten streak that began in November 2012. Starting the day at 37 for 1 and trailing Karna- taka by 223 runs, J&K had their task cut. They put up a fight in the first session courtesy Ian Dev Singh (94) and Adil Reshi (36), who weathered the early storm and combined for a 64-run stand for the third wicket. The duo batted with conviction on a track that assisted the seamers, espe- cially when the pacers hit the areas with indentation which were in plenty. But after lunch, the Karnataka pacers took control. Just like on day one when Abhimanyu Mithun had picked up two crucial wickets in the post match session to derail J&K’s innings, Sreenath Aravind put in an inspired spell of pace bowling and removed skipper Parvez Rasool (25) two overs into the session, getting him to edge behind. An over later, Aravind had Hardeep Singh (0) lbw and from a relatively safe 148 for 3, J&K imploded for the second time in match to be bundle out for 233. After losing Aditya Pratap off the second ball of the day to R Vinay Kumar, Reshi and Ian Dev stuck around for nearly 18 overs to raise hopes of the match going into the final day. Ian Dev, who had scored 103 against Uttar Pradesh in the last game, started with a couple of confi- dent drives off Mithun in the third over of the day. Reshi, batting with high fever, had to work harder for his runs. Mithun troubled him on the offside repeatedly and finally succeeded in inducing and edge when the batsman cut straight to second slip. Following Rasool’s exit, Ian Dev went after legspinner Shreyas Gopal and reached his fifty with a six straight down the ground - a shot that saw him shift gears with a volley of shots that took him to 94 before Vinay bowled him in the 60th over. With that, Karnataka wrapped up the lower order. BRIEF SCORES Jammu and Kashmir 160 & 233 (Ian Dev Singh 94; Sreen- ath Aravind 3/48) lost to Karnataka 423/9 dec. Smith hundred helps Australia post huge total

Ranji Trophy: Karnataka inflict innings defeat on JK

Gul out, Younus in for World Cup

Melbourne, Jan 7: Steve Smith com-pleted his fourth century in as many matches on Wednesday as Australia compiled a daunting first innings total in the final test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Australian captain added to his incredible run of form against the tour-ists with a composed 117 as Australia, already holding an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, declared on 572 for seven shortly after tea on day two.

In response to the huge total, India got off to a horrible start, losing in-form opener Murali Vijay for a duck on the third ball to left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc. But Lokesh Rahul (31 not out) and Rohit Sharma (40 not out), brought back after being dropped for the third test in Melbourne, ensured there was no further damage and took India to 71-1 at stumps.

After Australia had resumed on 348-2, Shane Watson fell for 81 in the morning session with Shaun Marsh (73) the only batsman to get out in the after-noon. A half-century from Joe Burns (58) meant the home side’s top six bats-men made at least a fifty.

Smith continued his extraordinary

run of form, following up his 162 not out in the first test in Adelaide, 133 in the second test in Brisbane and 192 in the third test in Melbourne with another hundred.

He was caught by Ravichandran Ashwin at deep midwicket off the bowl-ing of Shami, marking the 24th time he had made a test half-century but failed to go on and reach triple figures.

REUTERS

SMITH JOINS GREATS Steven Smith has 698 runs in the series at an average of 139.6, placing him third behind Bradman (715) and Ponting (706) for most runs in a series against India. He has now scored six centuries in the first innings of his last seven Tests at home.

Sohail Khan the big surprise in Pakistan squad Karachi, Jan 7: Pakistan announced their 15-man World Cup squad on Wednes-day, leaving out Fawad Alam and Umar Gul and including pace bowler Sohail Khan who last played internation-al cricket in 2011.

Veteran batsman Younis Khan, who hit a purple patch in Test cricket but was mediocre in the recent ODIs against New Zealand, was also included in the squad.

Left-hand middle-order batsman Fawad Alam, who has been Pakistan’s most reli-able ODI batsman of late, will feel unlucky to have missed out, the selectors instead preferring another player in similar mould, Haris Sohail.

“We did consider both of them [Fawad and Malik], but in the end we believe Haris

Sohail bowled well in the series against New Zealand

with his left-arm bowling,” chief selector Moin Khan said. “He also gives us an added advantage of being a left-handed batsman.”

Fast bowler Junaid Khan also returned from a knee injury after missing the series against New Zea-land, and will lead Paki-stan’s pace attack with Mohammad Irfan. Pakistan, placed in Group B, will open its campaign with a high-ly-charged clash against arch-rivals and defending champions India in Ade-laide on February 15 fol-lowed by matches against the West Indies, Zimbabwe, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Ireland.

The top four teams from each of the two groups will qualify for the quarter-finals,

leading up to the final in Mel-bourne on March 29.

Khan said the team was selected after consultation with Misbah and coach Waqar Younis.

“We selected the squad after thorough consulta-tion... and although no one can give assurances of results, we are hopeful that the team will do well,” said Khan, a member of Paki-stan’s only World Cup win-ning side in Australia in1992.

‘Played bad cricket’Srinagar, Jan 7: Skipper Parvez Rasool on Wednesday said that J&K played bad cricket against reigning champions Karnataka and deserved to lose the game.
